Chapter 3: The Money My Mother Left Behind

Dad closed the office door.

Then he called someone.

“Robert, I need you to come over tonight.””

He listened for a moment.

“No, it's urgent. I found transactions connected to the trust.””

Another pause.

“It's about Maya.””

I sat in the chair opposite his desk, gripping my phone.

Dad ended the call and looked at me.

“Do you remember your mother talking about a college fund?””

I nodded.

“A little.””

Mom used to tell me that I could study anywhere I wanted.

She'd say it while cooking dinner, while driving me to school, or while brushing my hair before bedtime.

“Don't let anyone tell you the world is too big for you, Maya.””

I had always assumed she was talking about ordinary savings.

Dad pulled a folder from a locked drawer.

Inside were documents with my mother's signature.

“Your mother established a trust for you before she died,” he explained.

“She wanted you to have enough money for college, a home, and whatever opportunities life offered.””

“How much?””

He hesitated.

“Your mother left approximately $640,000.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Some of it came from her inheritance. Some came from investments she made before we married.””

I had never known.

Dad continued.

“The trust was designed so the money would remain yours. I was appointed trustee after her death.””

“Then why does Vanessa have access?””

“She doesn't.””

He turned the laptop toward me.

“That's what concerns me.””

The document on the screen showed that several withdrawals had been authorized through a secondary account.

I recognized the signature at the bottom.

It was Dad's.

But something about it looked wrong.

The letters were too sharp.

The final stroke was missing.

“Did you sign that?””

Dad studied it.

“No.””

He zoomed in.

“That's not my signature.””

A knock sounded at the office door.

Dad stood.

“Come in.””

A man in his early sixties entered carrying a leather briefcase.

Robert Hayes was Dad's longtime attorney. He had attended my mother's funeral and helped Dad handle the estate afterward.

He looked at me.

“Maya, sweetheart. I didn't expect to see you tonight.””

Dad handed him the documents.

“Robert, tell me what I'm looking at.””

Robert put on his glasses.

He studied the first page.

Then the second.

His expression darkened.

“Where did you get these?””

“From a transaction history connected to Vanessa's company.””

Robert looked up.

“Has Vanessa seen these?””

“Not yet.””

Robert set the papers down.

“David, we need to be careful.””

“Why?””

“Because these withdrawals appear to have been made using a trustee authorization.””

“I didn't authorize them.””

“I understand.””

“Then explain why my daughter's trust has been paying a company owned by my wife.””

Robert remained silent.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Robert turned toward me.

“It means someone may have used your mother's trust for purposes it was never intended to fund.””

Dad clenched his jaw.

“How much?””

Robert examined the figures.

“Approximately $86,400.””

My mouth fell open.

“Eighty-six thousand?””

Robert nodded.

Dad stood so quickly his chair rolled backward.

“Who authorized these payments?””

Robert looked at the dates.

“Some appear to have been processed through an account associated with Jordan's youth banking profile.””

I remembered Jordan's message.

The account under his name.

But then Robert pointed to another section.

“This one is different.””

He tapped the page.

“The account ending in 7714 belongs to Vanessa.””

Dad stared at him.

“Then why did she tell me she didn't recognize it?””

Robert removed his glasses.

“Because she may have hoped you wouldn't look closely enough.””

I felt sick.

My mother had left money for my future.

And someone had been taking it.

I thought about the vacation.

The ticket.

The yellow towel.

All those months of excitement.

Suddenly, the stolen refund didn't seem like the worst part.

It felt like a warning.

Dad paced behind his desk.

“I want the accounts frozen.””

Robert nodded.

“I'll contact the bank first thing in the morning.””

“Tonight.””

“David, the fraud department has an emergency line. I'll call them.””

Dad turned toward me.

“I'm sorry.””

I blinked.

“For what?””

“For allowing this to happen under my roof.””

I looked at the papers.

“Did Mom know?””

His face softened.

“No, sweetheart. She would never have allowed anyone to touch that money.””

I swallowed.

“Did you?””

He stopped pacing.

“What?””

“Did you know Vanessa was taking it?””

The silence hurt more than I expected.

Dad walked around the desk and knelt beside my chair.

“No.””

I looked into his eyes.

“Promise?””

He took both my hands.

“I promise you.””

I wanted to believe him.

I did.

But before I could answer, the office door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Her face was flushed.

“What is going on?””

Dad stood.

“Where have you been?””

“Looking for my sons. Why is Robert here?””

Robert calmly closed the folder.

“Good evening, Vanessa.””

She looked at the documents.

Then at me.

“Why is Maya involved in this?””

Dad's voice turned cold.

“Because the money belongs to her.””

Vanessa laughed once.

“Oh, David. Please don't tell me we're having this conversation because of a canceled vacation.””

“It's not about the vacation anymore.””

“Then what is it about?””

He placed the bank statement on the desk.

“Blue Harbor Holdings.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I see.””

“You see what?””

Vanessa looked at Robert.

“Has he explained how complicated these family finances are?””

Robert folded his hands.

“There's nothing complicated about unauthorized withdrawals.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“Then explain the transfers.””

She looked at Dad.

“I used some money to cover household expenses.””

“From Maya's trust?””

“It was temporary.””

“You withdrew eighty-six thousand dollars.””

“I was going to replace it.””

“When?””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“David, I was trying to protect this family!””

Dad stared at her.

“By stealing from my daughter?””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Don't use that word.””

“What word would you prefer?””

She looked at me.

“This is exactly why I didn't want her involved.””

I stood.

“You didn't want me to know my own money was missing?””

Vanessa took a step toward me.

“Maya, you don't understand adult finances.””

“I understand that you canceled my ticket.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You were never supposed to find those documents.””

The words fell into the room.

Nobody moved.

Vanessa realized what she'd said.

She quickly shook her head.

“I mean, you shouldn't be going through private paperwork.””

Dad moved between us.

“Get away from my daughter.””

Vanessa looked at him.

For the first time, there was no performance in her face.

Only anger.

“You're making a terrible mistake, David.””

“Am I?””

She grabbed her handbag.

“Fine. But before you destroy this family, perhaps you should ask Robert why your first wife's trust was structured the way it was.””

Robert's expression changed.

Dad turned toward him.

“What is she talking about?””

Vanessa smiled.

May you like

Then she delivered the sentence that made Robert immediately stand.

“Tell him about the second beneficiary.””
