Chapter 6: The Contract That Was Never Meant to Be Found

Vanessa was the first person to move.

She stepped away from Daniel as if his touch had suddenly become dangerous.

“Exclusive legal and financial control?”” she repeated.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“It's not what it looks like.””

I stared at him.

“Then explain what it looks like.””

He looked toward the guests gathered behind the glass doors. Several had stopped pretending not to watch.

“Not here,” he muttered.

Vanessa laughed.

It was a small, broken sound.

“You keep saying that. Not here. Not now.

Not in front of people. When exactly are you planning to tell the truth?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Vanessa, you're pregnant. You need to calm down.””

“Don't use my pregnancy to silence me.””

She picked up the agreement and held it toward him.

“Did you write this?””

Daniel glanced at Andrew.

Andrew shook his head.

“Don't look at me. I told you this was wrong.””

“You signed it,” Daniel snapped.

“I signed a donor agreement. Not this.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Actually, Andrew is right. This document was prepared separately.””

She pointed to the bottom of the page.

“It's not a standard fertility clinic consent form. It's a private agreement drafted through Whitmore Family Holdings.””

I looked at her.

“Why would a property company have anything to do with embryos?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Because Daniel wasn't treating them as medical material. He was treating them as assets.””

The word made my stomach turn.

Assets.

Not potential children.

Not lives.

Assets.

Daniel reached for the document.

Rachel pulled it away.

“Don't.””

He looked at her.

“You have no idea what you're accusing me of.””

“I have the original records.””

“You stole confidential files.””

“I preserved evidence.””

“That's not your decision to make.””

Rachel's voice trembled, but she didn't back down.

“I watched you submit a forged authorization. I watched you change recipient information. I watched Dr.

Harris sign off on a transfer that should never have happened. And then I watched you pay people to keep quiet.””

Dr. Harris closed his eyes.

“Rachel, please.””

She turned toward him.

“You had four years to tell the truth.””

The doctor looked older than I remembered.

He had been a confident man when I first met him. He had explained every procedure with the calm authority of someone who believed medicine could solve almost anything.

Now he looked like a man who knew exactly how much damage his silence had caused.

I turned to him.

“Did you know Daniel had three children connected to my embryos?””

He swallowed.

“I knew about two transfers.””

“Two?””

“The first embryo was transferred to Laura Mitchell. The second was transferred to Vanessa.””

“Then where does Lily fit?””

Rachel answered.

“Lily was born through the first transfer. Laura later relinquished her parental claim after a dispute. The child entered temporary protective custody.””

I struggled to follow.

“So Laura had Lily?””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa is carrying the second embryo?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell me Lily was with a foster family?””

“Because Laura's legal situation is complicated.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Where is Laura now?””

He didn't answer.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel, who is Laura Mitchell?””

He exhaled.

“Someone from my past.””

“Your girlfriend?””

“Years ago.””

“Were you still seeing her when we were married?””

His silence was enough.

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

Daniel had not simply hidden a fertility mistake.

He had constructed an entire second life around it.

And somehow, I had been made the center of the lie.

Melissa appeared beside me.

“Claire, we should leave.””

I looked at her.

“Not yet.””

Daniel suddenly raised his voice.

“Everyone needs to stop acting like I'm some kind of monster. I was trying to create a family.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You had a wife.””

He shrugged.

“You and I hadn't even met.””

“And Claire?””

He turned toward me.

“Claire and I were finished.””

I took a step closer.

“Our marriage ended because you told me I was incapable of giving you a child.””

He looked away.

“You couldn't.””

“Neither could you.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

Daniel's face tightened.

I continued.

“Do you remember the tests? The results you insisted we keep private? The doctor telling us both that neither of us had a definitive diagnosis?””

He said nothing.

“You made me believe my body had failed us. You made me sit on bathroom floors and cry over negative pregnancy tests while you complained about coffee and appointments.””

My voice began shaking.

“And all that time, you were making arrangements to have children using the embryos we created together.””

Daniel's jaw flexed.

“I wanted to be a father.””

“So did I.””

He looked at me.

For a moment, I thought he might apologize.

Instead, he said, “You wouldn't have been happy anyway.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“You were always so focused on the process. The injections. The appointments.

The numbers. You made having a child feel like a medical project.””

I felt Melissa's hand close around my arm.

Daniel continued.

“I wanted something normal.””

Vanessa took a step toward him.

“Normal? You forged documents. You used my husband's brother as a sperm donor without telling me. You lied about the genetic origin of my baby.””

She stopped.

Then she asked quietly, “What else did you lie about?””

Daniel's expression changed.

Nothing.

Not even a denial.

Andrew suddenly spoke.

“Vanessa, there's something you need to know about the payment.””

She turned.

“What payment?””

“The $180,000.””

Daniel spun around.

“Andrew, don't.””

Andrew pulled out his phone.

“I kept the bank transfer records.””

He opened a document and handed it to her.

Vanessa read it.

Her eyebrows drew together.

“Why was money paid to Laura?””

Andrew shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Rachel looked at the statement.

“That's not the full amount.””

Daniel went completely still.

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Rachel opened her folder and removed a second page.

“There were three payments. One to the surrogate agency. One to Laura Mitchell. And one to an account controlled by Daniel.””

Vanessa stared.

“Why would he pay himself?””

Rachel answered.

“Because the agreement contained a clause transferring any financial compensation connected to the resulting children to Whitmore Family Holdings.””

I felt sick.

Daniel had not merely wanted children.

He had wanted control.

Control over their legal identities.

Control over their financial futures.

And possibly control over the people raising them.

Vanessa sat down on the stone bench.

“I need to go to the hospital.””

Melissa immediately moved toward her.

“Are you feeling okay?””

“My stomach is tight.””

Daniel rushed forward.

“Vanessa!””

She raised a hand.

“Don't touch me.””

Her breathing was shallow.

I knelt beside her.

“Look at me. Take a slow breath.””

She grabbed my hand.

For the first time that afternoon, we weren't former wife and current wife.

We were simply two women trying to survive the same man's lies.

An ambulance was called.

While we waited, Vanessa looked at me.

“Claire?””

“Yes?””

“If the baby is yours genetically, does that mean you want to take him?””

I swallowed.

“I don't know.””

Her eyes filled.

“I've been carrying him for eight months. I talk to him every morning. I sing to him when I can't sleep.””

I squeezed her hand.

“I understand.””

“Do you hate me?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She began crying.

“I didn't know.””

“I believe you.””

Daniel stood several feet away, speaking urgently into his phone.

I watched him.

Then I noticed something.

He wasn't calling an ambulance.

He was calling someone else.

When the paramedics arrived, Vanessa was taken to the hospital for observation.

Melissa went with her.

Andrew stayed behind.

And Rachel approached me with one final envelope.

“Claire, there's a document I deliberately kept separate.””

I looked at her.

“What is it?””

“An original letter from Laura Mitchell.””

My heart began beating faster.

“What's in it?””

Rachel handed it to me.

“Laura says she was told something about Lily that Daniel never intended anyone to discover.””

I opened the envelope.

The first line was written in blue ink.

To the woman whose child I was asked to carry and whose identity I was told to erase...

I stopped reading.

At the bottom of the page was a phone number.

And a handwritten warning.

If you want to know why Daniel chose you for this, ask him what happened to the first embryo.

I looked up.

Daniel was watching me from the doorway.

May you like

And when he saw the letter in my hand, he whispered one word.

“No.””
