Chapter 5: The DNA Result That Destroyed His Perfect Family

I thought I had reached the worst part of the truth.

I was wrong.

Vanessa stood in the garden with one hand resting on her stomach and the other gripping the photocopied documents.

Daniel stared at her.

“Stop.””

She shook her head.

“I'm done stopping.””

“Vanessa, you're upset.””

“I'm pregnant, Daniel. I'm not stupid.””

He glanced at me.

“Claire, you should leave.””

I almost laughed.

“You invited me.””

“I invited you to a baby shower.””

“And apparently, to a criminal investigation.””

His face reddened.

Vanessa stepped between us.

“Tell her.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“There's nothing to tell.””

“Then why did you refuse the paternity test?””

He went completely still.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What paternity test?””

She swallowed.

“The doctor recommended one after my last appointment.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That was unnecessary.””

“The doctor said there were inconsistencies in the genetic screening.””

“Screenings aren't always accurate.””

“He said the baby's results didn't match the family history you gave him.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Vanessa continued.

“So I asked for a paternity test.””

“And?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“He refused.””

Daniel let out a frustrated breath.

“Because the entire thing is ridiculous.””

“Then prove it,” Vanessa said.

He looked at her.

“You're my wife.””

“Then prove it.””

The garden door opened again.

Melissa stepped outside.

“What's happening?””

Vanessa turned.

“Daniel doesn't want to take a DNA test.””

Melissa looked confused.

“Why would he need one?””

Vanessa stared at her husband.

“That's what I want to know.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Can everyone stop acting like I'm on trial?””

I stepped closer.

“Maybe because you've spent four years treating other people's lives like property.””

His eyes flashed.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“Then explain the two embryos.””

He looked at me.

“You're obsessed with something that happened years ago.””

“Something you did.””

“Something that should have stayed between us.””

I shook my head.

“You made it everyone's business when you put those eight words on my invitation.””

For the first time, he had no immediate answer.

Vanessa took a breath.

“I have the results.””

Daniel's head snapped toward her.

“What?””

She reached into her handbag and removed a white envelope.

“I had the test done privately.””

His face lost color.

“Where did you get a sample?””

She looked at him.

“Your toothbrush.””

Melissa made a small sound.

I stared at the envelope.

“Are you sure you want to open that here?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I've spent three weeks being told I'm imagining things. I'm finished imagining.””

She opened the envelope.

Her fingers shook as she removed the paper.

I watched her eyes move across the page.

Then she stopped.

Her lips parted.

She read it again.

And again.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

Vanessa pulled the paper against her chest.

“No.””

“What does it say?””

She looked up.

Her eyes were wet.

Then she whispered, “You're not the biological father.””

The garden went silent.

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa held out the report.

“It's negative.””

He grabbed it.

His eyes moved rapidly across the page.

“This is wrong.””

“It isn't.””

“Who arranged this?””

“I did.””

“You don't understand how DNA testing works.””

“I understand what the report says.””

He crushed the paper in his fist.

“This is a mistake.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Then why are you so afraid of another test?””

He didn't answer.

I watched him carefully.

For the first time since I had known him, Daniel looked genuinely frightened.

But there was something else.

He wasn't surprised.

He looked like a man who had spent weeks waiting for a bomb to explode.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Did the report identify the biological father?””

She nodded.

“There was another test.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

“Vanessa, don't.””

She looked at me.

“The clinic compared the baby's DNA with the genetic profile attached to the original embryo records.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“And?””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“The baby I'm carrying was conceived using your embryo.””

I closed my eyes.

I had suspected it.

But hearing the words made everything real.

The child growing inside Vanessa was genetically mine.

And Daniel wasn't the biological father.

I looked at him.

“Then whose sperm was used?””

Vanessa began crying.

“That's what I don't understand.””

She handed me the report.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

There was a section identifying the embryo's genetic contributors.

The egg source was listed as Claire Bennett.

The sperm source was listed as an anonymous donor.

I looked up.

“Anonymous?””

Vanessa nodded.

“That's what the clinic told me.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the paper.

His hands were trembling.

“You told me it was your sperm,” I said.

He laughed bitterly.

“You don't know anything about the treatment.””

“Then explain it.””

He shook his head.

“Not here.””

I stepped closer.

“Who is the donor?””

He looked at me.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he spoke.

“Someone who helped us.””

“Who?””

He glanced toward the house.

I followed his eyes.

A man stood near the glass doors.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Wearing a charcoal suit.

He was speaking with one of Daniel's business partners.

I recognized him immediately.

Dr. Harris.

No.

Not the doctor.

The other man.

The man standing beside him.

Daniel's younger brother, Andrew.

Andrew Whitmore.

I remembered him from our marriage.

He had been thirty-two when Daniel and I divorced.

He had attended our wedding, helped us move into the estate, and once driven me to the emergency room when Daniel was out of town.

He had always been kind to me.

Almost too kind.

He was now forty-one, successful, unmarried, and working as Daniel's business partner.

I looked back at Daniel.

“Andrew?””

He didn't answer.

Vanessa whispered, “What?””

I stared at him.

“Is Andrew the biological father?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

And that was when the garden door opened again.

Andrew stepped outside.

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

His face changed.

“Daniel,” he said quietly.

Daniel turned.

“Not now.””

Andrew looked at the crushed DNA report in his brother's hand.

“It's already happened, hasn't it?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You knew?””

Andrew swallowed.

“Vanessa, I can explain.””

She took a step backward.

“No.””

He looked at Daniel.

“You told me she would never find out.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Andrew.

“What did you just say?””

He froze.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Get inside.””

Andrew pulled away.

“I'm not doing this anymore.””

Vanessa's face was pale.

“Doing what?””

Andrew looked at her.

Then he looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw the guilt he had been carrying.

“Claire,” he said, “I'm sorry.””

I couldn't speak.

He continued.

“Daniel told me the embryos had been abandoned. He said you had signed away all your rights and that he needed my help to build a family.””

I stared at him.

“What kind of help?””

Andrew looked toward Daniel.

Then he took a breath.

“I donated sperm.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I felt the world stop.

Andrew continued.

“But I didn't know he was using your embryos without permission. He told me they were anonymous donor embryos that had been legally released by the clinic.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Andrew, shut your mouth.””

Andrew ignored him.

“He told me Vanessa knew everything.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't.””

“I know,” Andrew whispered.

Daniel pointed toward the house.

“This conversation is over.””

But Andrew wasn't finished.

“There is something else.””

He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a folded document.

It was an original clinic authorization form.

He handed it to me.

I opened it.

At the bottom were three signatures.

Mine.

Daniel's.

And Andrew's.

Except mine was forged.

Daniel's was genuine.

Andrew's was genuine.

I looked at the date.

Four years ago.

Before the first embryo transfer.

Before Vanessa had even met Daniel.

I frowned.

“Why is your signature here?””

Andrew looked at me.

“Because Daniel asked me to sign a declaration.””

“What declaration?””

“That I would never claim parental rights over any child conceived using my donation.””

I stared at the document.

Then I noticed the final paragraph.

It contained a sentence that made my fingers go numb.

In the event of any dispute concerning the identity or custody of the resulting child, the biological contributors shall have no authority to challenge the designated parent.

The designated parent.

Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not me.

Daniel.

I looked up.

“What did you do?””

Andrew shook his head.

“I thought I was helping my brother.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“Why did you need this?””

He looked furious now.

“Because I wanted a family.””

“You already had one.””

He laughed.

“Don't be ridiculous.””

I held up the document.

“You planned this before our divorce was finalized.””

His silence answered me.

Then Melissa, who had been standing near the garden doors, spoke.

“Daniel, did you arrange the embryo transfer before you even married Vanessa?””

He looked at her.

“Stay out of it.””

But Melissa wasn't backing down.

“You invited Claire here to humiliate her because you wanted everyone to believe she was incapable of giving you a child.””

She pointed at the documents.

“But you used her embryos to create the family you're celebrating.””

Daniel's face turned red.

“That's enough!””

Vanessa stepped away from him.

“You told me our baby was biologically yours.””

He reached for her.

“Sweetheart—”

“Don't touch me.””

She placed both hands over her stomach.

“Do you even know which embryo was transferred into me?””

Daniel went silent.

I looked at the document again.

Something was wrong.

The authorization listed two embryos.

But the transfer report showed only one.

And beneath the second embryo's identification number was a handwritten note.

*TRANSFERRED TO RECIPIENT: L.M.*

I frowned.

“What does L.M. mean?””

Rachel's voice came from behind us.

“Those are not Vanessa's initials.””

We all turned.

She stood in the doorway, holding another folder.

Her face was pale.

“L.M.,” she repeated, “is the name of the woman who received the first embryo.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Who is L.M.?””

Rachel looked directly at Daniel.

Then she said a name I had never expected to hear.

“Laura Mitchell.””

Daniel's face went completely white.

Vanessa stared at him.

“Who is Laura?””

Rachel opened the folder.

“She was Daniel's girlfriend before he married you.””

The garden fell silent.

Then Rachel placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a woman holding a newborn baby.

And beneath the photograph was a hospital record dated four years earlier.

The baby had been born just weeks after my divorce.

The mother's name was Laura Mitchell.

The father's name was left blank.

But the child's genetic profile matched the embryo created from my eggs.

I stared at the photograph.

A little girl.

Dark hair.

Tiny fingers wrapped around her mother's thumb.

And suddenly, the mysterious messages made sense.

The stranger hadn't been warning me about one child.

There were three people whose lives had been built around a secret Daniel had kept for four years.

Vanessa was carrying one child.

Lily was living with a foster family.

And somewhere else, a woman named Laura was raising another little girl created from my embryo.

I looked at Daniel.

“Three children?””

He said nothing.

I stepped closer.

“How many times did you use my embryos?””

His face twisted.

Then, from behind us, Rachel delivered the final blow.

“Claire, there is one more document you haven't seen.””

She placed it on the table.

It was a signed agreement.

Dated four years earlier.

And the title read:

*WHITMORE FAMILY REPRODUCTIVE ASSET AGREEMENT.*

I looked at the signature at the bottom.

Daniel Whitmore.

Then I read the final sentence.

All resulting children shall remain under the exclusive legal and financial control of Daniel Whitmore, regardless of the genetic identity of the original contributors.

I slowly raised my eyes.

Daniel was no longer looking at me.

He was looking at Vanessa.

Because she had just realized something even more terrifying.

Her unborn child wasn't simply part of his secret.

May you like

He had written a contract attempting to claim every child created from my body.

And he had signed it before any of them were born.
