Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew the Truth
Robert didn't believe in coincidences.
When I told him about Sarah Bennett's call, he asked me to write down everything she had said, including the exact time of the call and the number displayed on my phone.
He also reminded me not to contact her repeatedly or attempt to obtain evidence independently.
“If she has information about a potential crime, the police need to handle the next steps,” he said.
“What if she disappears?””
“Then we provide the information we have and let the investigators assess the risk.””
I understood his caution.
But I couldn't stop thinking about Sarah's final words.
The camera wasn't Daniel's idea.
If she was telling the truth, then someone else had planned the surveillance.
Someone else might have planned the accusation.
And someone else might have been guiding my son toward a decision he couldn't reverse.
At eleven the next morning, Officer Brooks called.
“We've received information from your attorney about the proposed property transaction,” she said.
“We're reviewing the documents you've provided.””
“Have you identified the person who installed the hidden camera?””
“Not yet. The device is being examined. We have also requested records from the security provider.””
“What about the missing footage?””
“We've recovered additional data, but we're not ready to discuss its contents.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Does it show Mia tearing her blouse?””
Officer Brooks paused.
“Mr. Harrison, I understand how difficult this is. But I can't give you a running account of the evidence. I can tell you that the recovered material is being preserved and examined.””
“Will it prove I didn't touch her?””
“That is one of the questions we're investigating.””
I thanked her and hung up.
An hour later, Sarah sent a message.
*I can meet with your lawyer and the police. I won't meet with you alone.*
Robert arranged for her to speak with the authorities at his office, with the appropriate safeguards.
She arrived that afternoon carrying a thick envelope and a laptop bag.
Sarah was in her early forties, with tired eyes and a small scar near her chin. She wore a plain gray coat and kept looking toward the window as if expecting someone to appear outside.
Robert introduced himself.
“Ms. Bennett, thank you for coming. Before we begin, I want you to understand that we're not asking you to speculate. Tell us only what you personally know, and provide any documents you can lawfully share.””
She nodded.
Then she opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails, payment records, and a copy of an agreement between Daniel's consulting company and one of Adrian Cole's businesses.
I sat opposite her.
“Why did you call me?””
Sarah looked at me for a long moment.
“Because I saw your name on a document that should never have existed.””
She slid a page across the table.
It was an agreement describing the proposed property transaction and the payment Daniel would receive once control of the house had been transferred.
The amount was five hundred thousand dollars.
I read it twice.
“Why would Cole pay my son that much money?””
“Because the property is worth more than the amount he's offering you.””
“How much more?””
Sarah hesitated.
“Cole's company estimated the redevelopment value at nearly twice the proposed purchase price.””
I stared at the page.
“So Daniel was going to sell my home for less than it was worth and collect half a million dollars on the side?””
“That's what the agreement appears to say.””
Robert leaned forward.
“Ms. Bennett, what is your role in this company?””
“I work in document administration. I prepare files for review, check signatures, and maintain transaction records.””
“Did you prepare the power of attorney?””
“No. It arrived in a packet from Daniel's company.””
“Did you believe it was genuine?””
“At first, yes. It had your name, a signature, and what appeared to be notarization.””
“What changed your mind?””
Sarah reached into her bag and removed another page.
“I compared the signature with a copy of an older deed included in the file. The handwriting was similar, but the pressure and stroke patterns didn't match. I flagged it for review.””
“What happened?””
“Mr. Cole told me to stop asking questions.””
She swallowed.
“He said the family had already agreed to the transaction and that I was risking my job by interfering.””
“Did you report it?””
“I tried to. I sent an email to the compliance department.””
“And?””
“The message disappeared from the system. When I asked about it, my manager said there had been a technical issue.””
Robert made a note.
“Do you have a copy?””
Sarah nodded.
“That's in the envelope.””
I looked at her.
“Did you know about the accusation against me before it happened?””
Her expression changed.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“What did you know?”” I asked.
Sarah pressed her hands together.
“Two days before the dinner, Daniel called Mr. Cole. I was in the office when the call came through the speaker system. Daniel said he needed to create a situation that would make you easier to manage.””
My throat tightened.
“What did Cole say?””
“He asked whether Daniel was sure he wanted to involve the police. Daniel said it wouldn't go that far. He said the goal was to make you appear unstable and force you to hand over control of the property.””
I felt a cold pressure behind my ribs.
“And Mia?””
Sarah looked down.
“Her name came up.””
“How?””
“Daniel said Mia would handle the confrontation.””
I couldn't speak.
Robert asked the next question.
“Did you hear Daniel say what she was supposed to do?””
Sarah nodded.
“He said she would make the accusation, then refuse to discuss details. He believed the uncertainty would be enough to create pressure.””
I stared at her.
The torn blouse.
The screams.
The way Mia had looked at the ceiling.
It had all been planned.
“Did Cole agree?””
Sarah took a shaky breath.
“He said he didn't want to know the details. He only cared that the property transaction moved forward.””
Robert closed the folder.
“Ms. Bennett, that's a serious allegation. We'll need to verify the records and your account. Are you willing to give a formal statement?””
“Yes.””
“Do you have any reason to fear retaliation?””
Sarah gave a humorless laugh.
“Mr. Cole told me yesterday that if I interfered with the transaction, I would lose my job and possibly face legal action.””
Robert exchanged a glance with me.
“We'll inform the investigators about that threat.””
Sarah looked at me.
“I'm sorry, Mr. Harrison.””
“For what?””
“For not speaking up sooner.””
I studied her face.
“Why are you speaking up now?””
She looked toward the window.
“Because my father was accused of stealing from his employer when I was sixteen. He hadn't done it. The company blamed him because he had no money to fight back. He lost his job, his reputation, and eventually his home.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I watched him spend the rest of his life believing nobody would ever listen to him again. I promised myself I wouldn't stay silent if I ever saw something like that happening to someone else.””
I nodded slowly.
“Thank you.””
She gave Robert a digital copy of the documents and agreed to cooperate with the investigation.
Before she left, she turned back.
“There is one thing I haven't told you.””
Robert gestured for her to sit again.
“What is it?””
“The hidden camera.””
I leaned forward.
“Who installed it?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Mia.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“How do you know?””
“Because I saw the invoice. She purchased the device through a company account and had it delivered to an address associated with Daniel's consulting business. The payment was processed six weeks ago.””
“Why would she install it?””
Sarah shook her head.
“I don't know. But I do know she asked Mr. Cole whether recordings from your home could be used in a legal dispute.””
Robert's expression hardened.
“What did he tell her?””
“He said recordings could be useful if they showed a pattern of behavior. Then he told her to make sure she understood the local recording laws.””
I felt sick.
“Was the camera installed to record me?””
“I believe so.””
“But why?””
Sarah took a breath.
“Because Daniel and Mia had already discussed claiming that you were becoming aggressive and forgetful. They wanted evidence that could support a request to have someone else manage your affairs.””
Robert wrote something down.
“Did you hear them discuss the night of the dinner specifically?””
“Yes. Daniel said the family gathering would give them an opportunity to create a record of conflict.””
I closed my eyes.
The family dinner.
The roast beef.
The white roses.
The grandchildren laughing over dessert.
They had chosen the one evening I had spent weeks preparing because it would be crowded enough to make the accusation believable and intimate enough to make it devastating.
“What happened to the footage?”” I asked.
Sarah looked uncomfortable.
“I don't know exactly. But I saw a message from Mia to Daniel the next morning. She wrote that the original recording had been moved to a separate storage account.””
“Did she say where?””
“No. But the message included a reference number.””
She handed Robert another page.
He examined it carefully.
“This is a storage identifier,” he said.
“It may help the forensic team locate the file.””
I felt a flicker of hope.
“Then the recording still exists.””
“It may,” Robert replied.
“We shouldn't assume until the investigators confirm it.””
After Sarah left, Robert sat quietly for several minutes.
Then he turned toward me.
“Thomas, this changes the picture considerably. We now have a witness who claims the accusation was discussed in advance, documents suggesting a financial motive, and information about the hidden camera.””
“Can the police arrest them?””
“That's a decision for the authorities based on the evidence and applicable law. Our job is to preserve what we have and cooperate fully.””
I nodded.
For the first time in weeks, I felt that the truth was moving forward.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
His voice was strained.
“Dad, I need you to listen to me.””
“I'm listening.””
“Have you spoken to Sarah Bennett?””
I looked at Robert.
He immediately signaled for me to put the call on speaker.
“How do you know her?”” I asked.
“That's not important.””
“It seems important to me.””
Daniel exhaled sharply.
“She doesn't understand what she's doing. She's trying to destroy everyone involved in the transaction.””
“Did you ask her to use a forged power of attorney?””
“No.””
“Did you plan the accusation against me?””
Silence.
Then he said, “Dad, you don't understand the full situation.””
“Then explain it.””
“I was trying to protect my family.””
“By accusing your father of assault?””
“I didn't know Mia would take it that far.””
The words landed like a stone.
I closed my eyes.
“You knew she was going to accuse me.””
“Dad—”
“Answer me.””
He began speaking rapidly.
“Cole said it would be temporary. He said the accusation would make it easier to get you to sign the documents, and then we'd settle everything privately. I never thought the police would get involved like this.””
My mouth went dry.
“You knew.””
“I didn't want you to get hurt.””
“You let your wife accuse me of a crime.””
“I was desperate!””
“For what?””
He didn't answer.
I looked at Robert, who was listening intently.
“Daniel, what happened to the original footage?””
He went silent.
“Daniel?””
His voice dropped to a whisper.
“You need to stop looking for it.””
“Why?””
“Because it doesn't show what you think it shows.””
I stared at the phone.
“What does it show?””
He breathed shakily.
Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.
“It shows why Mia was afraid of me.””
The line went dead.
I looked at Robert.
Neither of us spoke.
Because suddenly, the story had changed again.
May you like
And I no longer knew whether Mia had been only a willing participant in the plan.
Or whether my son had hidden something from everyone, including the woman he had asked to help destroy me.
