Chapter 3: My Son's Secret

I didn't sleep that night.

At four in the morning, I sat at Margaret's old desk with a mug of coffee growing cold beside me, staring at the administrator login on my phone.

Daniel's email address.

The same email he had used to send me birthday cards for years.

The same email he had used when he asked me to help pay for his wedding.

The same email he had used three weeks earlier to send me a business proposal requesting two hundred thousand dollars.

I opened that message.

The subject line read: *A Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity.*

Daniel had described a property development project outside the city. He claimed a group of investors was purchasing several commercial buildings and converting them into luxury apartments.

The returns, he said, would be substantial.

But when I asked to see the contracts, he told me everything was still being finalized.

When I asked for the names of the other investors, he changed the subject.

When I refused to transfer the money, he had accused me of treating him like a child.

I had dismissed the argument as frustration.

Now I wondered whether the argument had been the beginning of something much darker.

At seven o'clock, I called my daughter.

Claire answered after six rings.

“Dad?””

Her voice sounded exhausted.

“Have you spoken to Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“And Mia?””

A pause.

“Dad, please don't start.””

“I haven't started anything. I'm asking a question.””

“Daniel says you're trying to intimidate Mia.””

I closed my eyes.

“Claire, you were standing right there. You saw me at the top of the stairs.””

“I saw you arguing.””

“I wasn't arguing. I asked if she was all right.””

“That's what you say.””

The words struck harder than Daniel's slap.

“Do you believe I attacked her?””

“I don't know what to believe.””

“You watched her tear her own blouse.””

“I didn't see the beginning.””

“You saw me standing six feet away from her.””

“Dad, I can't do this right now.””

“Claire, please.””

She sighed.

“Daniel says the camera was broken. He says you're obsessed with proving Mia is lying.””

“Then why did he change the password?””

Silence.

“What?””

“The security system. Daniel logged in remotely at 7:42 p.m. He changed the administrator password.””

Claire didn't answer.

“Claire?””

“I have to go.””

“Wait. Just tell me one thing. Did Mia say anything to you about the camera?””

A long pause followed.

Then Claire whispered, “She said we shouldn't look at it.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

“Claire, that's exactly what she said to me.””

“I know.””

“Then help me understand.””

Her breathing became uneven.

“Dad, Daniel is furious. He's telling everyone that you're dangerous. He's telling Mia she needs to press charges.””

“Why would he do that if he knows I didn't touch her?””

“I don't know.””

But this time, I heard something beneath her words.

Fear.

“Claire,” I said quietly, “what aren't you telling me?””

She began to cry.

“I'm sorry.””

Then the call ended.

I sat at the desk, holding the phone to my ear long after the line went dead.

At nine o'clock, I called an old friend named Robert Ellis.

Robert had been a criminal defense attorney before retiring two years earlier. We had played golf together for almost twenty years, and he'd helped me settle my mother's estate without charging me a penny.

He answered with his usual gruff greeting.

“Thomas, unless you're calling to tell me you've finally learned to putt, this had better be important.””

“I need your help.””

His tone changed immediately.

“What happened?””

I told him everything.

He listened without interruption.

When I finished, he asked me to meet him at his office.

“Bring every message you've received from Daniel or Mia,” he said.

“And don't delete anything.””

An hour later, I sat across from him in a small office that smelled of coffee and old books.

Robert examined the security notification on my phone.

“Do you have the original recording stored in the cloud?””

“The system usually uploads footage automatically.””

“Usually?””

“If the internet connection is working.””

“Was it working that night?””

“Yes. I checked the front-door camera.””

He leaned back.

“Then the missing footage is worth investigating.””

“Can someone erase a recording remotely?””

“If they have administrator access, possibly. But don't jump to conclusions. We need to establish what happened, not simply what looks suspicious.””

He opened his laptop.

“Let's start with the timeline.””

We worked through the evening minute by minute.

The dinner began at 6:30.

I left the table at 7:24.

The administrator login occurred at 7:42.

Mia screamed at approximately 8:00.

The footage was missing when the police checked at 8:19.

Robert tapped his pen against the desk.

“That's a narrow window.””

“Daniel says the camera was broken.””

“Then we need to know when it stopped recording.””

“Can you find that out?””

“Not without access to the system records. But we can preserve what you have and ask the company whether the footage can be recovered.””

He looked at me carefully.

“Thomas, I also want you to understand something. Do not contact Mia directly. Do not confront Daniel alone. Let the authorities investigate.””

“I don't intend to confront anyone.””

“Good. Because if this is a deliberate false accusation, the truth may be more complicated than you think.””

Before I left, Robert made copies of the relevant messages and helped me secure the login information.

As I stood, he touched my arm.

“One more thing.””

“What?””

“If Daniel has access to your financial accounts, change your passwords today.””

I frowned.

“He doesn't have access to my bank account.””

“Does he have access to your email?””

“Yes, years ago I let him help me set up online banking.””

“Then check everything.””

I drove home with his warning echoing in my mind.

By noon, I had changed the passwords on my email, bank account, and security system.

The banking website asked me to verify a recent transaction.

I selected the last thirty days.

At first, everything looked normal.

My pension deposit. The electricity bill. The insurance payment.

Then I saw a transfer for $8,500.

The recipient was a company called Harrison Property Consulting.

I had never heard of it.

I opened the details.

The transfer had been authorized six days earlier.

I called my bank.

After ten minutes on hold, a representative confirmed the payment had been made through an online transfer.

“Did you authorize this transaction, Mr. Harrison?””

“No.””

“Was anyone acting on your behalf?””

“No.””

“Then we'll need to open a fraud investigation.””

I sat very still.

Eight thousand five hundred dollars wasn't enough to ruin me. I had savings, a pension, and a modest investment portfolio.

But the money itself wasn't the point.

Someone had used my account.

Someone who knew my habits.

Someone who knew I would probably overlook a single transfer among my monthly bills.

I asked the representative for the recipient details.

She said she couldn't disclose all the information immediately, but she could confirm that the receiving company had been registered less than three months earlier.

I wrote down the name.

Harrison Property Consulting.

Then I searched my email for the phrase.

A message appeared from Daniel.

It was dated two months earlier.

*Dad, I've set up a consulting company for the property project. It's just an administrative thing. Don't worry about the paperwork.*

I had never responded.

I had never agreed to anything.

I forwarded the message to Robert.

His reply arrived five minutes later.

*Do not transfer any more money. I'll call you shortly.*

I spent the afternoon checking every account I could access.

At three o'clock, a black SUV pulled into my driveway.

Daniel stepped out.

He walked to the front door and knocked twice.

I watched him through the glass.

For a moment, I saw the little boy who used to stand on the porch waiting for me to come home from work.

Then he lifted his hand and pounded on the door.

“Dad! Open up!””

I unlocked it but kept the chain in place.

“What do you want?””

He stared at me.

“Why are you digging into my finances?””

The question was so direct that I almost laughed.

“Your finances?””

“You contacted the bank.””

“Yes.””

“You had no right.””

“Someone transferred money out of my account without my permission.””

His jaw tightened.

“It was an administrative error.””

“Then you can explain it to the bank.””

“Dad, listen to me. This is a business arrangement. I'll pay you back.””

“When did I agree to lend you the money?””

He looked away.

“You always said you'd help me.””

“I have helped you. That doesn't give you permission to take my money.””

He struck the doorframe with his palm.

“You're making a mistake!””

I held my ground.

“Did you change the security camera password?””

He went still.

“What?””

“Did you log into my security system at 7:42 on the night Mia accused me of attacking her?””

He stared at me for several seconds.

Then he smiled without warmth.

“You really think you're clever, don't you?””

“Answer the question.””

He leaned toward the narrow opening.

“Dad, you need to stop. You're seventy years old. You live alone. People are already asking questions about your judgment.””

My stomach tightened.

“What people?””

“People who care about you.””

“Are you threatening me?””

“I'm trying to protect you.””

He straightened his jacket.

“Sign the house over to me. Let me handle everything. The investigation, the bank, all of it. You can live here as long as you want.””

I stared at him.

The house Margaret and I had built.

The house where we had raised our children.

The house where my grandchildren had learned to walk.

“You want my house?””

“I want to keep this family from falling apart.””

“Then tell the police the truth.””

His face darkened.

“You don't know what you're asking.””

He turned and walked toward his SUV.

I watched him leave, my hands trembling against the door.

Then I noticed something on the porch.

A white envelope had been pushed beneath the doormat.

My name was written across the front in unfamiliar handwriting.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

It was a copy of a document titled *Durable Power of Attorney*.

My name appeared at the top.

Daniel's name appeared beneath it.

At the bottom was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

Almost.

May you like

I had never signed that document.

And the date beside my signature was three weeks earlier.
