Chapter 8: My Sister's Confession
Chloe was sitting at the kitchen island when we returned home.
She had changed out of her gold dress and was wearing an oversized sweatshirt, her hair pulled into a loose knot. A cup of tea sat untouched in front of her.
She looked up as we entered.
"Did you find anything?""
My father placed the trust records on the counter.
"Yes.""
Her eyes moved to the documents.
Then to me.
"What happened?""
I sat opposite her.
"Chloe, we need to talk about the trust portal.""
Her face went pale.
My father remained standing.
"The disputed transfer was submitted from a device registered to you.""
Chloe stared at him.
"No.""
"The records are clear.""
"No, Dad. I didn't transfer any money.""
I watched her carefully.
"Did you access the trust portal?""
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
That hesitation was enough to make my father's expression harden.
"Chloe.""
She pressed both hands against the counter.
"I logged in once.""
"When?"" I asked.
"Three weeks ago.""
"Why?""
She looked at my father, then at me.
"Mom asked me to.""
My father pulled out the chair beside her.
"Tell us everything.""
Chloe began picking at the sleeve of her sweatshirt.
"Mom said she needed to check some old company records. She told me the family accountant had sent her a link and that she couldn't access it from her own laptop.""
"Did she tell you what the portal contained?"" I asked.
"She said it was just a list of shareholders and some old financial statements.""
"Did you use your own credentials?""
Chloe nodded.
"Mom said the portal was already saved on my laptop because I'd helped her with some company paperwork before.""
I frowned.
"Why would you have access to a trust belonging to me?""
"I didn't have access at first. She told me to enter the code she sent to my phone. Then she asked me to leave the laptop open while she checked something.""
My father leaned forward.
"Did you see what she did?""
Chloe's eyes filled.
"Not at first.""
"Chloe.""
She wiped her cheeks.
"I came back into the room because I'd forgotten my phone. Mom was typing something into the portal. There were forms on the screen, and she told me to go away.""
"Did you ask what she was doing?""
"Yes. She said she was fixing a problem that could destroy the family.""
My stomach tightened.
"What kind of problem?""
"She said Emma's shares were going to cause trouble once Dad made the announcement. She said if the company couldn't restructure its ownership, the new investors might withdraw.""
My father stared at her.
"That is not true.""
"I know that now.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Chloe looked down.
"Because Mom said you'd blame me for letting her use the laptop. She said I could lose my trust fund, my apartment, everything.""
I studied her face.
"You were afraid of her.""
Chloe gave a small, miserable laugh.
"You're asking that now?""
The words stung.
She was right.
I had spent years assuming Chloe's cruelty came from confidence. I had rarely considered that her loyalty to Victoria might also have been built on fear.
But fear did not erase what she had done.
"Did you know she was transferring money?"" I asked.
"No. I swear. I never saw a number. I only saw a form with your name on it.""
"Did you sign anything?""
"No.""
"Did you send her a code?""
"Yes. The code came to my phone. She said she needed it to open the records.""
My father stood and paced to the window.
"That code may have authorized the session.""
Chloe began crying harder.
"I didn't know! I thought I was helping her look at company records.""
I looked at the documents.
"Then why didn't you tell us when you found the bank statement?""
She covered her face.
"Because I was ashamed.""
The kitchen went quiet.
Chloe lowered her hands.
"When I found the statement in Mom's desk, I realized the transfer had already happened. I asked her what it meant, and she told me it was a temporary arrangement. She said the money would be returned after the gala.""
"Did you believe her?""
"I wanted to.""
She looked directly at me.
"Just like Dad wanted to believe her. Just like you wanted to believe that if you kept quiet, she'd eventually stop hurting you.""
I felt the words settle between us.
For once, Chloe wasn't defending herself with excuses.
She was describing the same family in which we had grown up.
But we had survived it differently.
I had learned to disappear.
She had learned to obey.
Neither lesson had made us safe.
My father returned to the counter.
"Did your mother tell you where the money went?""
"No.""
"Did she mention Westbridge Asset Solutions?""
Chloe nodded slowly.
"She said it was a temporary company for the restructuring.""
My father closed his eyes.
"Who else knew about it?""
"Richard. I heard them talking on the phone.""
"What did you hear?""
Chloe took a breath.
"Mom said the transfer had to be completed before the gala announcement. Richard told her the trustee might question the authorization. She said the signature would pass.""
My hands went cold.
"She knew my signature was forged?""
Chloe nodded.
"I think so.""
My father struck the counter with his palm.
"Enough.""
Chloe flinched.
He immediately stepped back.
"I'm sorry," he said, lowering his voice.
"I am not angry with you for telling us. I am angry that this happened.""
He sat down.
"Did you keep any messages from your mother?""
Chloe hesitated.
"Yes.""
She took her phone from her pocket and opened a conversation.
There were dozens of messages between her and Victoria.
Most were ordinary: reminders about appointments, dinner plans, shopping lists.
Then Chloe scrolled to a conversation from three weeks earlier.
Victoria had written:
Use your laptop tonight. I need you to help me access the old trust records.
Chloe had replied:
Why can't Richard do it?
Victoria's answer came immediately.
Because I need someone who won't ask unnecessary questions.
I read the line twice.
The next message was worse.
Don't tell your father. He will only make this difficult.
Chloe had responded with a simple thumbs-up.
I looked at her.
"You knew she wanted to keep it secret.""
"Yes.""
"Why did you agree?""
Her face crumpled.
"Because I always agreed.""
She put the phone down.
"Do you remember when we were sixteen and you tried to leave for that summer program? Mom told Dad you had been stealing from her purse.""
I remembered.
I had been accused of taking two hundred dollars. Victoria had claimed she found the money missing after I visited her bedroom.
My father had made me apologize.
The money later appeared in the pocket of one of Victoria's handbags.
No one had apologized to me.
Chloe swallowed.
"I knew she had put it there.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"I saw her take the money from her purse and put it in the pocket of her other bag. I knew she was going to blame you.""
My throat tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she said she'd send me away to boarding school if I interfered. She said Dad would believe her, and I'd be left alone.""
I felt something inside me shift.
It wasn't forgiveness.
Not yet.
It was the realization that Chloe had been capable of helping me and had chosen not to.
She had been frightened, but I had been frightened too.
The difference was that I had borne the consequences alone.
"You let me believe I had done something wrong," I whispered.
Chloe nodded.
"I know.""
"You watched Dad punish me.""
"I know.""
"And you never said anything.""
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I know, Emma.""
I stood up and walked to the sink.
For several seconds, I stared at the water running over my fingers.
Then I turned it off.
"I can't promise that things will be normal between us.""
"I don't expect that.""
"And if you're telling the truth now, you'll have to tell the same truth to the trustee, the bank, and anyone investigating the transfer.""
Chloe nodded.
"I will.""
My father picked up her phone.
"We need to preserve these messages.""
"Can I send them to Patricia?""
"Yes. But do not delete anything or contact your mother.""
Chloe hesitated.
"What if she calls me?""
"Do not answer without legal advice.""
My father returned the phone to her.
Then he looked at me.
"Emma, there is something else.""
I braced myself.
"Richard has resigned from his position with Carter Industries.""
"What?""
"He sent a letter this morning. He says he is withdrawing from all company matters because of a conflict of interest.""
I frowned.
"That sounds convenient.""
"It is.""
My father's phone rang.
Patricia Wells.
He answered and put it on speaker.
"Daniel, we've completed the preliminary review of the transfer records," she said.
"The bank has confirmed that the authorization used to move the money was submitted through the trust portal. The funds were transferred to an account controlled by Westbridge Asset Solutions.""
"Can they freeze it?""
"The receiving bank has placed a temporary hold on the remaining balance. However, a portion of the money was moved to another account before the hold took effect.""
"How much?""
"Approximately six hundred thousand dollars remains unaccounted for.""
My stomach tightened.
"And the rest?""
"We are tracing it. The transfer appears to have been divided into several payments.""
My father gripped the phone.
"Who authorized them?""
"That is the next question. We have also discovered that the digital authorization contains a second approval linked to a legal-services account associated with Richard Hale.""
Chloe covered her mouth.
I felt cold.
"Does that mean Richard was involved?"" I asked.
"It means his credentials were used. We need to establish whether he personally authorized the transaction or whether someone accessed his account without permission.""
My father nodded.
"Understood.""
Patricia continued.
"There's another issue. Westbridge Asset Solutions filed an application yesterday morning to use the disputed shares as security for a commercial loan.""
I stared at her.
"Use my shares as collateral?""
"That is what the filing indicates.""
"Can they do that?""
"Not lawfully without the necessary approvals. The trustee has challenged the application, and the lender has been notified of the ownership dispute.""
My father leaned back.
"Who is the lender?""
Patricia gave us the name.
Northbridge Capital Partners.
I recognized it from the invitation to the gala. Northbridge was one of the firms considering a major investment in Carter Industries.
My father went pale.
"They were supposed to announce the partnership tonight.""
"Yes," Patricia said.
"And we have reason to believe someone used the disputed trust transfer to support a separate financing arrangement with them.""
The room fell silent.
Victoria hadn't merely tried to steal from me.
Someone had attempted to use my inheritance to secure a business deal connected to my father's company.
And if the arrangement had gone through, the consequences could have reached far beyond our family.
My father ended the call.
He stood by the window, staring at the garden.
"She was going to use your shares to finance the deal.""
I looked at Chloe.
"Did you know?""
She shook her head desperately.
"No. I swear.""
I believed her about that much.
But I still didn't know whether I could trust her.
My father turned toward us.
"Nobody leaves this house until we've spoken to the trustee and secured the remaining documents.""
He took out his phone again.
"I need to call Northbridge.""
Before he could dial, Chloe's phone rang.
The caller ID showed one name.
*MOM.*
Chloe stared at the screen.
My father held up his hand.
"Don't answer.""
The call stopped.
A message arrived seconds later.
Victoria had written:
I know you've been talking to your father.
Another message followed.
If you want to protect your sister, you'll tell them you submitted the transfer yourself.
Chloe's face went white.
I read the message over her shoulder.
Then a third message appeared.
Because if you don't, Emma will discover what really happened to the money—and what I have waiting for her next.
I looked at my father.
He was already reaching for the phone.
But before he could speak, Chloe whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"Emma, I think Mom has a copy of your original signature.""
"Where?""
Chloe shook her head.
"In the blue folder she keeps in her bedroom.""
"What's in it?""
She looked at me with frightened eyes.
"Documents about you. Your school records, your passport application, and a copy of the medical file from when you were a child.""
My father stared at her.
"Why would Victoria have Emma's medical file?""
Chloe swallowed.
"Because she told me once that if you ever challenged her, she could prove you weren't capable of managing your inheritance.""
I felt the room tilt.
Victoria wasn't simply trying to take my money.
May you like
She was preparing to make the world believe I was incapable of protecting it.
And she had been collecting evidence for years.
