Chapter 6: The Housewarming Nobody Would Forget
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The music continued playing softly from the speakers. Someone in the kitchen laughed at something I couldn't hear. A waiter carried a tray of champagne glasses toward the dining room.
But in the living room, the atmosphere had changed completely.
Daniel stared at Rebecca.
“What is she doing here?””
Rebecca placed her folder on the marble island.
“I'm Sarah's attorney. I believe we have some matters to discuss.””
Patricia recovered first.
She set down her champagne glass and forced a smile.
“Oh, this is ridiculous. We're having a family celebration, not a courtroom hearing.””
I looked at her.
“Then why did you invite me to sign legal documents?””
Patricia's smile disappeared.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Sarah, can we please talk privately?””
“No. You wanted everyone here when you planned to pressure me into signing. Everyone can hear the explanation.””
His jaw tightened.
“You're making a mistake.””
“I'm sure you said the same thing when you copied my signature.””
A murmur moved through the room.
Melissa stopped pouring champagne.
One of Daniel's uncles put down his drink.
Patricia raised her voice.
“That's enough! Sarah, you're making accusations you cannot prove.””
Rebecca opened her folder.
“Actually, Mrs. Thompson, we have several documents we'd like to discuss.””
She removed three pages and placed them on the counter.
The first was the investment authorization bearing my forged signature.
The second was the proposed collateral agreement involving my father's property.
The third was a transaction summary showing money transferred from accounts funded by my earnings.
Daniel looked at the papers.
Then he looked at me.
“Where did you get these?””
“From the records you left behind.””
“You had no right to go through my business files.””
Rebecca interrupted.
“Mr. Thompson, these documents contain our client's personal information and a signature she denies providing. We have preserved copies and are pursuing verification of their authenticity.””
Patricia laughed nervously.
“This is all a misunderstanding. Sarah and Daniel share everything.””
I turned toward her.
“Then perhaps you can explain why you received $47,500 from our joint savings.””
Her expression froze.
Melissa looked at her mother.
“What money?””
Patricia shot her a warning glance.
“Don't involve yourself.””
I took another sheet from my folder.
“Here are the transfers. Forty-seven thousand five hundred dollars to your personal account. Another thirty-two thousand to Thompson Lifestyle Holdings. Several additional payments to accounts connected to this property.””
A relative near the window whispered, “Patricia, what is she talking about?””
Patricia straightened her dress.
“It's family money. Daniel was helping me.””
“Helping you with money that wasn't his alone?””
She looked directly at me.
“You were married to him. Everything was shared.””
Rebecca calmly replied.
“Marriage does not automatically authorize someone to forge another person's signature or transfer individually owned property.””
Daniel slammed his palm against the counter.
“Enough!””
The room went silent.
He pointed at Rebecca.
“This woman has no idea how our family works.””
Rebecca didn't flinch.
“I'm not here to discuss your family traditions. I'm here to protect my client.””
Daniel turned to me.
“Sarah, you really want to do this in front of everyone?””
I looked around the room.
The same relatives who had laughed at Patricia's jokes during the birthday dinner were now watching us with uncomfortable expressions.
“Yes,” I said.
“Because you made me the entertainment at your mother's birthday. I thought everyone deserved to see the entire story.””
Patricia's face turned red.
“You ungrateful woman!””
She reached for the documents.
Rebecca moved them away.
“Please don't touch those.””
Patricia looked at Daniel.
“Tell her!””
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“Fine. Yes, I transferred some money. But I was building something for all of us. I wanted to give Mom a better life.””
I stared at him.
“You told me we couldn't afford a vacation.””
“We had business expenses.””
“You told me my car needed to last another five years.””
“Sarah, stop comparing things!””
“You told me we needed to save money because the economy was uncertain.””
He stepped toward me.
“I was trying to build wealth!””
“With my money?””
“With our money!””
I shook my head.
“Then why did you hide it?””
He had no answer.
Richard appeared in the doorway.
He had arrived with another investigator and a representative from the title company.
Daniel stared at him.
“You?””
Richard nodded.
“Hello, Daniel.””
“You have no business being here.””
“I was invited by Sarah's attorney. And I have some questions about the financial representations you made to my company.””
Daniel's face lost color.
Richard placed a document beside Rebecca's folder.
“Your investment proposal stated that Sarah had contributed $210,000 and agreed to provide additional collateral. Neither claim has been verified.””
Daniel swallowed.
“That's a misunderstanding.””
“Then perhaps you can explain why the signature on your authorization documents differs from the verified signature samples we obtained.””
The room became completely silent.
Patricia stepped between them.
“This is a private family matter!””
Richard looked at her.
“Not anymore.””
He turned toward the assembled guests.
“I don't know how much everyone here has been told about this property, but the purchase has been placed under review because of questions concerning its financing and supporting authorization documents.””
A woman near the dining room gasped.
Melissa put down her glass.
“Mom, you said Daniel bought this house.””
Patricia snapped, “He did!””
“With what money?”” I asked.
She turned toward me.
“You have no right to interrogate me!””
I took a breath.
“Patricia, I paid for your birthday dinner because I wanted Daniel to have a beautiful evening with his mother. I paid for family vacations. I helped Melissa when she needed rent. I never complained when your family treated my contributions like obligations.””
My voice trembled, but I continued.
“But you stood in front of thirty-two people and told me I was lucky your son married me.””
Patricia crossed her arms.
“And you are!””
I looked at Daniel.
“No. I was lucky I had enough money to leave.””
His expression changed.
I removed one final document from my folder.
It was a notice from my attorney confirming that I was formally disputing the alleged authorization and demanding preservation of all records involving my personal property and financial accounts.
“I won't be signing anything today,” I said.
Daniel's face hardened.
“You can't just walk away.””
“Watch me.””
Then Patricia did something I hadn't expected.
She started crying.
Not quietly.
She covered her face and sobbed loudly enough for the guests to turn toward her.
“After everything I've done for this family,” she wailed, “she wants to destroy us!””
Melissa rushed toward her.
“Mom, please.””
Patricia pointed at me through her tears.
“She came into our family with nothing, and now she's trying to take everything!””
I almost laughed.
With nothing?
I had paid for the house she was standing in.
I had paid for the dinner where she humiliated me.
I had spent years helping her son maintain a lifestyle he couldn't afford.
But before I could respond, Richard examined a page from his folder and frowned.
“Daniel, there's something else.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Richard turned the document around.
“This property was supposed to be purchased through Thompson Lifestyle Holdings. But according to the preliminary records, the down payment came from a different account.””
Daniel's mouth opened.
Richard continued.
“An account belonging to someone named Melissa Thompson.””
Melissa froze.
Patricia stopped crying.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why would Melissa be funding this house?””
Nobody answered.
May you like
Then Melissa whispered something that made the entire room turn toward her.
“Because Daniel told me the money was mine.””
