Chapter 7: The Father Who Knew the Truth
Nia read the message again as the elevator descended.
I know where the original designs were taken.
She didn't recognize the number, but she recognized the name.
Thomas Reed had been a ghost in the family for years. Brianna rarely mentioned him, and Vanessa described him as a selfish man who had abandoned his daughter when things became difficult.
Nia had met him only twice.
Once at Brianna's fifth birthday party, when she was still living with her mother.
And once at a school event years later, when Thomas had arrived unexpectedly, stood near the entrance for ten minutes, and left without approaching anyone.
Vanessa had told Brianna he was too ashamed to face the family.
Now he was sending Nia evidence.
She opened the photograph.
It showed a handwritten inventory of fashion sketches, fabric samples, and prototype garments. At the bottom, a storage location had been written in blue ink.
*Unit 214 — Mercer Storage, Queens.*
The date was twenty-three years old.
Nia forwarded the message to Daniel.
His response came quickly.
Do not visit the storage unit alone. I know Thomas. I will contact him through his attorney and verify the document before anyone takes action.
Nia stared at the message.
She was tired of waiting for adults to decide what she was allowed to know.
But Daniel was right. If the document was genuine, it could be important evidence. If it was false, confronting Thomas alone could make things worse.
She called Mrs. Brooks.
The teacher answered on the second ring.
"Are you all right?""
"I think someone has evidence about my mother's stolen collection.""
"Who?""
"Thomas Reed. Brianna's father.""
Mrs. Brooks paused.
"Where are you?""
"Outside the competition building.""
"Stay there. I'm coming down.""
Twenty minutes later, she met Nia in the lobby.
Together, they waited for Daniel.
When he arrived, he examined the photograph and called a lawyer who had handled the original competition dispute.
After several conversations, the lawyer confirmed that Thomas Reed had contacted the office years earlier, claiming he possessed documents relating to the disappearance of Elena's designs.
He had never delivered them.
"He could be telling the truth," Daniel said.
"But we need to verify the original records.""
"Will he meet us?"" Nia asked.
"He's agreed to speak with us this afternoon, with legal representatives present.""
Nia nodded.
For the first time, the past felt less like a locked room and more like a door that might finally open.
They met Thomas in a small conference room at a law office in Midtown.
He arrived wearing a dark suit that looked slightly too large at the shoulders. His hair was almost completely gray, and he carried a battered leather briefcase.
When he saw Nia, he stopped.
"You look like Elena.""
Nia didn't know what to say.
Thomas sat across from her.
"I suppose you've heard terrible things about me.""
"Mostly that you left.""
He looked down.
"That's true.""
Daniel folded his hands.
"Thomas, we need to discuss the document you sent Ms. Carter.""
Thomas opened his briefcase.
Inside were several folders, a flash drive, and a photograph of a small storage unit.
"I kept these because I knew what happened was wrong," he said.
"But knowing something is wrong and having the courage to stop it are two different things.""
Nia watched him carefully.
"What happened?""
Thomas removed a handwritten letter.
"In 2003, Vanessa and I were married. I worked in commercial property management, and she was desperate to build a career in fashion. Elena was helping her with everything. Patterns, construction, design, even introductions to people in the industry.""
He looked at the table.
"Vanessa told me she had created a collection that would make her famous. I believed her. Then one night, I came home and found several garment bags in our spare room. They contained pieces I had seen Elena working on.""
"Did you ask her about them?"" Nia said.
"Yes. She told me the collection was a collaboration and that Elena had agreed to let her present it.""
Nia's fingers curled around the edge of her chair.
"Did you believe her?""
"At first. Then I found the sketches.""
Thomas placed a sheet of paper on the table.
It was a copy of a design drawing. The handwriting was unmistakably Elena's.
"I recognized it because Elena used to leave her notebooks at our house when she came to help Vanessa. I asked Vanessa why she had her sister's original sketches. She said Elena had given them to her.""
"And you believed that?""
"No.""
The honesty in his voice surprised Nia.
Thomas continued.
"I told Vanessa she needed to return everything. She refused. We argued for days. She said Elena was talented but too timid to succeed, and that the designs would be wasted if she didn't use them.""
Nia felt a bitter knot form in her stomach.
That sounded exactly like Vanessa.
Thomas rubbed his forehead.
"I should have contacted the competition committee. I should have gone to Elena. Instead, I convinced myself it was a family argument and that it would resolve itself.""
"Why didn't you tell anyone after the competition?""
"Because I was a coward. Vanessa threatened to accuse me of stealing the designs myself. She had already submitted paperwork, and I was afraid I'd lose my job.""
He took a breath.
"By the time I understood how far she had gone, the collection had been sold. I kept copies of the documents and the remaining samples. I put them in storage because I didn't trust anyone to handle them properly.""
Nia looked at the photograph of the storage unit.
"Why contact me now?""
Thomas's eyes reddened.
"Because I saw the photograph of Brianna wearing your gown. I recognized the embroidery. It was Elena's work, and I realized Vanessa was doing the same thing all over again.""
He looked directly at Nia.
"I can't undo what happened to your mother. But I can stop pretending I didn't know.""
For several seconds, Nia couldn't speak.
She had expected excuses.
Instead, she was listening to a man admit that his silence had helped protect a lie.
"Do you think Vanessa knew you kept the documents?"" Daniel asked.
"She knew I had copies. She didn't know where I stored them.""
"Then we need to secure them.""
Thomas nodded.
"I've already contacted the storage company. The unit is still in my name. My attorney can arrange access.""
Nia stared at the old inventory.
"What else is there?""
Thomas hesitated.
"A recording.""
Daniel's expression sharpened.
"Of what?""
"Vanessa discussing the collection with a representative from the company that bought it. I made it because I suspected she was planning to deny everything if the designs were challenged.""
"Where is it?""
"In the storage unit, along with the original sketches and several samples.""
Nia felt her heartbeat accelerate.
The original designs.
The evidence that had disappeared before the competition.
The proof her mother had never been able to produce.
If the materials were still intact, the truth might finally be established.
But Thomas's face had changed.
"There is something else," he said.
Nia waited.
"Before Elena died, she contacted me. She wanted me to testify about what happened in 2003.""
"Did you?""
"No.""
"Why?""
Thomas's voice broke.
"Because Vanessa threatened to make sure I never saw Brianna again. I was already living separately, and I thought I could repair my relationship with my daughter later.""
He looked at Nia.
"I chose the easier path. Elena died before I found the courage to make it right.""
Nia felt anger rise inside her.
"My mother spent years believing no one would help her.""
"I know.""
"She thought she had to rebuild everything alone.""
"I know.""
"And now you want me to forgive you because you finally decided to tell the truth?""
Thomas flinched.
"No. You don't owe me forgiveness.""
Nia stood.
"Good.""
She walked to the window and looked down at the traffic.
For a moment, she imagined her mother sitting alone at a sewing table, repairing a stranger's coat while the people who had betrayed her went on with their lives.
Then she turned back.
"I want the evidence preserved. I want the committee to know what happened. And I want my mother remembered for what she created, not what Vanessa stole.""
Thomas nodded.
"I'll help.""
Daniel arranged for the lawyers to meet Thomas at the storage facility the next morning. Nia would attend with Mrs. Brooks, while the attorneys documented everything.
Before they left the office, Thomas approached her.
"I know this doesn't fix anything," he said.
"But your mother once told me you had her hands.""
Nia looked down at her fingers.
"She said they were good for making things.""
Thomas smiled sadly.
"She said they were good for making things right.""
That evening, Nia returned to the supervised apartment arranged through the student support program. It was a small furnished room near Mrs. Brooks's sister, with a desk, a kitchenette, and a secure entrance.
For the first time in years, she could close a door without worrying about who might open it.
She placed her mother's butterfly pin on the desk and began stitching the final silver lines onto After the Storm.
At ten thirty, her phone rang.
It was Brianna.
Nia almost ignored the call.
Then she answered.
"What?""
Brianna's breathing sounded uneven.
"Mom found out about Dad.""
"How?""
"Someone from the law office contacted her. She's furious.""
Nia kept sewing.
"That isn't my problem.""
"I know. But she said she's going to destroy the evidence before anyone can use it.""
Nia froze.
"What did you say?""
"She told me Dad was trying to ruin her life. Then she said she'd go to the storage unit tonight.""
Nia looked at the clock.
It was ten thirty-two.
The lawyers weren't scheduled to arrive until morning.
"Did she say where the key was?""
Brianna hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"In the blue jewelry box in her bedroom.""
Nia stood.
"Why are you telling me this?""
Brianna's voice dropped.
"Because I saw what happened to you. And because I finally understand that if I keep helping her lie, I'll become exactly like her.""
Nia closed her eyes.
"Then call your father. Tell the lawyers. Don't go near that storage unit.""
"I won't.""
The call ended.
Nia immediately contacted Daniel and Thomas's attorney. They arranged for the storage facility to be secured and for the police to be notified if anyone attempted to remove or destroy property.
But before the arrangements were complete, Daniel called back.
"Nia, there's a complication.""
"What happened?""
"Someone has already entered the storage unit.""
Nia's stomach dropped.
"Who?""
Daniel paused.
"The facility manager found the lock cut. Several boxes are missing.""
"Are the original sketches gone?""
"We don't know yet.""
Nia gripped her phone.
"Was Vanessa there?""
"The security footage is being reviewed.""
May you like
Then Daniel said the words that made her blood turn cold.
"One of the boxes contained the original recording. And according to the facility manager, it was the first thing taken.""
