Chapter 8: The Letter His Wife Never Sent

Raymond didn't move.

For several seconds, he couldn't even hear the people speaking around him.

Daniel's words kept repeating in his mind.

Elaine helped Denise open the company.

Jada approached her father.

“Dad, don't listen to him.””

But Raymond was staring at Daniel.

“Explain.””

Daniel glanced toward the board members.

“Not here.””

“Then where?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Your house. Tonight.””

Raymond studied him.

“You have until six.””

Daniel nodded.

That afternoon, Raymond and Jada returned home.

The small house stood on a quiet street lined with maple trees.

The porch railing needed repainting.

A loose shutter rattled whenever the wind picked up.

But Raymond had kept the house exactly as Elaine had wanted it.

Her favorite blue curtains still hung in the kitchen.

Her old recipe book remained beside the stove.

Jada placed her graduation diploma on the dining table.

Then she sat down.

“Dad, what if Aunt Denise is telling the truth?””

Raymond looked at her.

“Which part?””

“That Mom helped her create the company.””

Raymond pulled out a chair.

“Your mother helped a lot of people.””

“But why would she help Denise?””

“Because she was her sister.””

Jada shook her head.

“That doesn't explain why she kept it secret.””

Raymond stared at the kitchen window.

He remembered Elaine sitting at that same table twelve years earlier.

She had been looking through bank statements.

He had asked her what was wrong.

She had smiled and told him she was tired.

He had believed her.

Or perhaps he had wanted to believe her.

“I think your mother was trying to protect someone,” he said.

“Who?””

“I don't know yet.””

At 5:47 p.m., someone knocked.

Daniel stood on the porch.

He looked exhausted.

Raymond opened the door.

“Come in.””

Daniel entered slowly.

He looked around the living room.

“Nothing's changed.””

“Some things don't need changing.””

Daniel sat on the sofa.

Jada remained standing.

“Start talking.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Your mother and Denise started Whitmore Development Partners together.””

Raymond said nothing.

“Denise had the business experience. Elaine handled the original paperwork and financial structure.””

“Why?””

“Denise wanted to invest in commercial property. Elaine thought it would help the family build something stable.””

Jada crossed her arms.

“Then what happened?””

Daniel looked down.

“The company started making money. Denise wanted to expand. She approached Elaine about using the educational trust as collateral for a development loan.””

Raymond's expression hardened.

“And Elaine refused.””

Daniel nodded.

“She said the trust wasn't private family money.””

“Of course she did.””

“But Denise insisted it was only temporary.””

Jada shook her head.

“So Mom helped her steal from Grandpa's trust?””

“No!”” Daniel said quickly.

He looked at Raymond.

“Elaine discovered the transfers after Denise had already moved money. She confronted her and demanded repayment.””

Raymond leaned forward.

“How much?””

“About two million at first.””

“Did Denise repay it?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not completely.””

Raymond closed his eyes.

Eight million dollars.

Twelve years.

A long chain of transactions.

“And what did you have to do with it?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Denise asked me to help with the company's accounts.””

“You were her accountant?””

“Partly.””

“Did you know the money came from the trust?””

Daniel nodded.

Jada stepped closer.

“You knew?””

“I didn't understand the full situation at first.””

“But you knew eventually.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Raymond stood.

“Then why didn't you tell us?””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Because Denise threatened to expose Elaine's involvement in creating the company. She said she would make it look like Elaine had stolen the money.””

Raymond stared at him.

“So you protected Denise.””

“I thought I was protecting Elaine.””

“My wife was dead, Daniel. What exactly were you protecting her from?””

Daniel had no answer.

After a long silence, Daniel removed a folded envelope from his jacket.

“This belonged to Elaine.””

Raymond took it.

The envelope was addressed in his wife's handwriting.

For Raymond, if I never get the chance to explain.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

My love,

I know you have been worried about me.

I know you can see that something is wrong, even when I tell you everything is fine.

I'm sorry I've been keeping secrets.

Denise and I started the company because I wanted my sister to have a chance to build something of her own. I thought I was helping her.

I was wrong.

Raymond swallowed.

He continued reading.

When I discovered what she had done with the educational trust, I demanded that she return the money. She refused.

She told me that if I exposed her, she would make sure everyone believed I had been part of the theft.

I was afraid.

Not for myself.

For you and Jada.

Raymond's eyes filled.

I wanted to tell you everything, but I couldn't bear the thought of you fighting a battle while trying to keep our daughter safe.

I am not asking you to forgive Denise.

I am asking you not to let what she did change the kind of man you are.

You have always believed that showing up matters more than being seen.

I hope you never lose that.

I love you.

Elaine.

Raymond lowered the letter.

Jada was crying.

She sat beside him and held his hand.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Raymond looked at Daniel.

“Why did you bring this now?””

Daniel took a shaky breath.

“Because Denise has something else planned.””

“What?””

“She wants to sell the remaining university land.””

Raymond frowned.

“The forty acres?””

“Not all of it. The land surrounding the old agricultural center. She has a private buyer.””

Raymond stood.

“Who?””

Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a contract.

The buyer was listed as Northstar Capital Holdings.

Jada read the figure.

“Twenty-four million dollars?””

Daniel nodded.

“That's the proposed purchase price.””

Raymond stared.

“And the buyer knows about the original covenant?””

“I don't think so.””

“Why would Denise sell it if the land is protected?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because she's planning to claim the trust has already been transferred to her.””

Raymond looked at the contract.

“When is the sale?””

“Tomorrow afternoon.””

Jada's voice trembled.

“Can she actually do that?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She has enough board support to try.””

Raymond walked to the window.

Outside, the sun was setting.

He looked at the old pickup parked in the driveway.

The same truck he had driven to graduation.

The same truck that had carried him through years of work, long nights, and sacrifices.

Then he turned.

“Daniel, I need you to testify.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Against Denise?””

“Against the truth being buried.””

Daniel looked down.

“She'll destroy me.””

Raymond nodded.

“She might.””

Jada stepped closer.

“But if you stay silent, she'll destroy everyone else too.””

Daniel stared at the letter in Raymond's hand.

Finally, he nodded.

“I'll testify.””

Raymond extended his hand.

Daniel shook it.

But before they could say anything else, Raymond's phone rang.

It was Patricia Cole.

“Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry to call this late.””

“What happened?””

“Northstar Capital has just filed an emergency request to complete the land purchase tomorrow.””

“Can they do that?””

“Not if we can establish the trust's restrictions.””

Raymond looked toward the table.

“What do you need?””

Patricia hesitated.

“The original Whitaker Declaration.””

Raymond glanced at the blue notebook.

“We have the safe records.””

“No. We found a reference to a second declaration.””

“Where?””

“Attached to a private legal filing.””

Patricia lowered her voice.

“It contains a clause that could invalidate every transfer Denise has made.””

Raymond tightened his grip on the phone.

“Then where is it?””

May you like

Patricia answered quietly.

“Your wife filed it twelve years ago.””
