Chapter 4: The Secret Inside the Hospital Records

Daniel Reed was waiting near the hospital cafeteria.

He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, tired eyes, and a dark suit that looked expensive but worn.

He stood when he saw me.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Daniel Reed. I was formerly the chief legal officer for Ashford Meridian Group.””

I didn't sit.

“What does that have to do with my daughter?””

He glanced around.

“Could we speak somewhere private?””

I crossed my arms.

“Say what you came to say.””

He looked at me for a moment.

Then he removed an envelope from his briefcase.

“I believe you and your daughter have been deliberately misled.””

I stared at the envelope.

“About what?””

“Alex Ashford's disappearance.””

I felt my heartbeat accelerate.

“Do you know where he is?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not exactly.””

“Then what do you know?””

He lowered his voice.

“Alex did not simply abandon your daughter. He was removed from the situation.””

I stared at him.

“Removed?””

“His mother arranged for him to leave the country after learning about the pregnancy.””

“Are you telling me she kidnapped her own son?””

“I'm telling you that his departure was not voluntary.””

I pulled out a chair.

“Prove it.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of emails, travel records, and internal company correspondence.

One email had been sent by Vivienne to a senior executive.

The subject line read:

*Bennett Matter — Immediate Containment.*

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

My hands began shaking.

Vivienne had instructed her staff to remove Alex from his university housing, arrange a private medical evaluation, and restrict his access to personal communications.

Another message referred to Elena as an unacceptable liability.

I looked up.

“What is wrong with this woman?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“She believes the family name is more important than any individual.””

“Why are you showing me this now?””

“Because I recently learned that she has gone further than anyone realized.””

He took out another document.

It was a copy of a laboratory report.

I didn't understand the technical language.

But one line was highlighted.

*Paternity analysis: consistent with Alexander Ashford as biological father.*

I looked at him.

“Is this real?””

“It came from a private laboratory used by the Ashford family.””

“Why would they test the baby?””

“They didn't.””

He paused.

“They tested something else.””

“What?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Alex's DNA was collected during a medical assessment. The family had already arranged for a private paternity comparison using a sample obtained from your daughter's prenatal records.””

I felt sick.

“They had access to her medical records?””

“Someone authorized it.””

I gripped the table.

“Who?””

“Dr. Lorraine Whitmore.””

The name from the gala photograph.

I stared at the report.

“So they knew?””

“They knew the child was Alex's.””

“Then why did they tell everyone otherwise?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because the Ashford family has a succession problem.””

I didn't understand.

He explained that Ashford Meridian had been established by Vivienne's late husband, Richard Ashford.

Richard had two children from his first marriage.

His daughter, Catherine, had died in a car accident seventeen years earlier.

His son, Thomas, had disappeared from the family's business records years before.

Vivienne had later married Richard and raised Alex as her own.

But there had been an unusual condition in Richard's estate documents.

A substantial portion of his controlling trust was reserved for his direct descendants.

And a separate provision protected the inheritance rights of any child born to a legally recognized Ashford heir.

I stared at Daniel.

“You're saying my granddaughter has a claim?””

“Potentially, yes.””

“How much?””

He shook his head.

“That's not the important part.””

I almost laughed.

“It's very important to the woman who offered me money to disappear.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

He slid another document across the table.

It was a copy of an internal memorandum.

At the top was Vivienne's signature.

The document instructed the legal department to challenge any claim involving an unacknowledged child.

It also authorized the transfer of certain trust assets into a separate family foundation.

I read the final paragraph.

Then I looked at him.

“Why are you helping us?””

Daniel was quiet.

Finally, he said, “Because I helped her do it.””

The cafeteria noise seemed to disappear.

“What?””

“I drafted some of the original documents. I helped arrange the settlements. I convinced myself that protecting the company was the same as protecting the people who worked for it.””

He swallowed.

“Then I saw what she did to Alex.””

I stared at him.

“Where is he?””

“I don't know. But I believe he's being held at a private rehabilitation facility in Connecticut.””

“Why would he be there?””

“Vivienne claims he has been struggling with addiction and emotional instability.””

“Is that true?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not according to the medical records I saw.””

He gave me a name.

Dr. Samuel Grant.

A physician who had treated Alex before his disappearance.

Daniel said the doctor had raised concerns about the way the family was controlling his medication and restricting communication.

I stood.

“I need to tell Elena.””

“Please be careful.””

I turned.

“Careful?””

“Vivienne knows I contacted you. She will move quickly.””

I looked at him.

“Then she should have thought about that before she came after my child.””

I returned to Elena's room.

She was awake.

Her face brightened when she saw me.

“Mom, where did you go?””

I sat beside her.

“I met someone who knows Alex.””

Her expression changed immediately.

“Is he okay?””

I hesitated.

“I don't know yet.””

I told her about the documents.

About the medical facility.

About the paternity report.

And about the inheritance provision.

Elena listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she looked toward the window.

“So he didn't leave because he stopped loving me?””

I took her hand.

“That's what the evidence suggests.””

She blinked rapidly.

“Why didn't he fight?””

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

“Why didn't he call?””

“I don't know.””

She looked down at her hospital blanket.

“Maybe he was scared.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“Maybe.””

Then she whispered something that broke my heart.

“I hope he's alive.””

I leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

“So do I.””

That evening, I went to the neonatal intensive care unit.

My granddaughter was in an incubator.

A tiny pink blanket covered her body.

Her name was Grace.

Elena had chosen it before the delivery.

I stood beside the incubator and watched the monitor.

A nurse named Olivia approached.

“She's a fighter.””

I smiled.

“She gets that from her mother.””

Olivia checked the monitor.

“Her oxygen levels have improved. The doctors are pleased with her progress.””

I placed one finger against the incubator opening.

“Hello, Grace.””

Her tiny hand moved.

I began crying.

“I'm your grandmother.””

For the first time in months, I felt something other than fear.

I felt hope.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

“Mrs. Bennett, my name is Samuel Grant.””

I stood straighter.

“Are you the doctor who treated Alex?””

“Yes.””

“Do you know where he is?””

There was a pause.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Mr. Ashford is no longer at the facility.””

“What do you mean?””

“He was transferred yesterday.””

“Where?””

“I don't know.””

I gripped the phone.

“Doctor, please. My daughter has been asking about him.””

His voice became urgent.

“Mrs. Bennett, listen carefully. Before he was transferred, Alex gave me something to pass along.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

My heartbeat thundered.

“What recording?””

The doctor lowered his voice.

“It's a conversation between Alex and his mother. And it proves that Vivienne knew exactly what she was doing.””

May you like

Then he said the words I would never forget.

“Your granddaughter isn't the only child she's been hiding.””
