Chapter 5: The Bride With Four Hundred Thousand Dollars

I had never seen that balance before.

That was the first thing I wanted Marcus to understand.

I had never opened an account with nearly four hundred thousand dollars in it. I had never authorized a transfer from his company. And I had certainly never agreed to help Daniel steal money from the man I had just married.

But when I tried to explain that, I could hear how ridiculous it sounded.

The notification was on my phone.

The account was in my name.

The money was real.

And every person who had seen the screen would remember those three facts long after they forgot anything I said.

"Marcus," I whispered, "I swear I didn't know.""

He held up the phone.

"Then why is this account in your name?""

"I don't know!""

"How can you not know?""

"Because Daniel handled the paperwork!""

Daniel's head snapped toward me.

"Careful, Clara.""

The warning was so quiet that I almost missed it.

Marcus didn't.

He turned slowly.

"What did you say?""

Daniel spread his hands.

"She's upset. She's trying to make sense of what she's seeing.""

"Don't speak for me," I said.

Daniel looked at me with a coldness I'd never seen before.

"You should be careful about what you accuse people of.""

I stared at him.

For three weeks, he'd made me feel like the only person who understood what I was going through. He'd listened when I complained about Evelyn. He'd encouraged me to stand up for myself. He'd told me Marcus needed to see the truth.

Now he was standing in my wedding reception, threatening me with a look.

And I finally understood something.

Daniel hadn't chosen me because he trusted me.

He'd chosen me because I was angry enough to be useful.

Marcus placed the phone on the table.

"Both of you are going to tell me everything.""

Daniel glanced at his watch.

"I think we need legal counsel before we go any further.""

"That would have been useful three weeks ago.""

"I was trying to protect the company.""

"From whom?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Marcus pointed at the document.

"You transferred company money into an account under my wife's name. You wrote a note saying I approved it. And you convinced her that my mother was the problem.""

"I never convinced her to lie about your mother.""

"You told her to keep Evelyn distracted!""

"I said she was interfering with the investigation.""

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"An investigation you were conducting into your own theft?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You don't know that I stole anything.""

"Then where did the money go?""

"I need to review the records.""

"You're standing right here. Review them.""

Daniel's eyes moved toward the exit.

Marcus stepped in front of him.

"You're not leaving until we understand what's happened.""

"You can't detain me.""

"No. But I can call the police.""

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely frightened.

I watched his face change, and a sickening realization settled over me.

He hadn't been afraid of Evelyn discovering the transfers.

He'd been afraid of what would happen when Marcus stopped trusting him.

And I had handed him exactly what he needed: a public scandal that made everyone look at Marcus's family instead of his finances.

"I didn't know about the money," I said.

Neither man looked at me.

"I knew Daniel had accounting concerns. I knew he'd given me documents. But I didn't know he'd transferred anything into an account in my name.""

Marcus finally turned.

"Why didn't you tell me he gave you documents?""

"Because I thought he was trying to protect you.""

"From my mother?""

"Yes.""

"By helping you lie about her?""

I had no answer.

Marcus pressed both hands against the table and lowered his head.

For a few seconds, he looked like a man trying to hold together something that was breaking in his hands.

Then he straightened.

"Diane.""

The venue manager, who had remained near the door, stepped forward.

"Yes, Mr. Reed?""

"Please contact the police. Tell them we have security footage of an assault and documents suggesting possible financial fraud. Don't delete or alter anything.""

My heart lurched.

"Marcus, no.""

He looked at me.

"Do you think I'm going to pretend none of this happened?""

"I didn't hit your mother.""

"No. I did.""

His voice cracked on the last word.

"I have to live with that. But I'm not going to let you or Daniel decide what happens next.""

Diane nodded and stepped into the hallway to make the call.

Daniel began pacing.

"This is a mistake. Marcus, you need to think about the company's reputation. If police get involved, our investors will hear about it.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Our investors?""

He picked up the document.

"You've been moving money out of the company for weeks, and you're worried about our reputation?""

"I'm worried about everyone who depends on us.""

"Don't you dare pretend this is about anyone but you.""

Daniel stopped pacing.

Then he looked at me.

"Clara, tell him what we discussed.""

I felt sick.

"What?""

"Tell him you understood the account arrangement.""

"I didn't.""

"You knew there was an account.""

"I knew you wanted me to sign some paperwork!""

Marcus turned toward me.

"You signed paperwork?""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

Daniel had brought me a stack of documents three days earlier. He'd said they were related to wedding expenses and a private financial arrangement that would protect me if Marcus's mother tried to interfere with our future.

I'd been distracted, angry, and eager to believe that someone was finally looking out for me.

I had signed two pages without reading them carefully.

I remembered asking whether Marcus needed to know.

Daniel had smiled.

"It's a personal arrangement. There's no reason to involve him until everything is finalized.""

I had believed him.

Now I wished I could go back to that café and tear every page into pieces.

"I signed something," I admitted.

Marcus closed his eyes.

"What did you sign?""

"I don't know.""

"You don't know?""

"I didn't read everything!""

He stared at me as though I had just confessed to something worse than the original lie.

"Clara, you signed financial documents you didn't read?""

Daniel seized the opening.

"She was trusting me. I told her I'd explain everything later.""

Marcus rounded on him.

"And you expect me to believe you were helping her?""

Daniel lifted his hands.

"I'm saying she wasn't entirely unaware.""

"Stop.""

Marcus's voice was so sharp that Daniel fell silent.

"You've spent the last three weeks making my wife believe my mother was her enemy. You put documents in her hands, used her name, and transferred company money into an account she claims she doesn't understand. And now you're trying to make her look like your accomplice.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"Maybe she is.""

The words struck me like a physical blow.

Marcus stared at him.

Daniel continued.

"Maybe you should ask your wife why she was so eager to believe me. Maybe you should ask why she hated your mother so much that she was willing to do anything to get rid of her.""

I couldn't deny that part.

I had hated Evelyn.
