Chapter 4: The Man Who Wanted My Father's Empire
We arrived at the corporate headquarters at 8:15 the following morning.
The building stood in Manhattan, a twenty-eight-story tower of glass and steel overlooking the Hudson River.
My father had purchased it when I was twenty-two.
Back then, it housed only three companies.
Now it was home to the aviation group, two logistics subsidiaries, a property investment firm, and several international business operations.
Camden had always loved the lobby.
He liked walking through it with investors, shaking hands with department heads, and watching employees stand when he entered.
He once told me the building made him feel powerful.
I had thought that was harmless.
I no longer did.
As the elevator doors opened, I saw a crowd gathered outside the executive conference room.
Camden stood at the center.
He wore a charcoal suit and a silver tie.
Vanessa Cole stood beside him.
Her hair was perfectly arranged, and her expression was composed.
Lila was nowhere to be seen.
Camden noticed me immediately.
“Vivian.””
I walked toward him.
“Camden.””
He glanced at Daniel.
“I see you brought legal representation.””
“It's a board meeting,” I replied.
“I assumed you'd understand the importance of having a lawyer present.””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Mrs. Pierce, perhaps we should all take a breath before this becomes unnecessarily confrontational.””
I looked at her.
“You're the chief financial officer?””
“Yes.””
“And you're also the woman in my bedroom.””
Her smile disappeared.
Several executives looked away.
Camden stepped forward.
“Enough.””
“No,” I said.
“You don't get to decide when enough is enough.””
He lowered his voice.
“Not here.””
I looked around.
“Why? Is there something you're afraid your employees might hear?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“This is a professional environment.””
“Then let's keep it professional.””
I handed Nora a document.
“Please distribute the suspension notice.””
Nora stepped forward.
“Effective immediately, Camden Pierce's delegated authority over restricted corporate assets has been suspended pending an independent review of suspected unauthorized transactions.””
Camden stared at the paper.
“You cannot do this.””
Daniel answered.
“The trust's protective provisions allow it under these circumstances.””
Vanessa snatched a copy.
“This is not valid.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Are you disputing the trust's governing documents, Ms. Cole?””
“I'm disputing the timing.””
“The timing is irrelevant.””
Camden crumpled the paper.
“This is a personal vendetta.””
I looked at him.
“Then explain the two-point-four-million-dollar payment to Northstar Advisory.””
Vanessa went still.
He glared at me.
“That was a legitimate transaction.””
“Then produce the contract.””
“We don't need to discuss that here.””
“Why not?””
He looked toward the executives.
“Because the company is facing a serious operational threat. We have contracts to fulfill, aircraft to maintain, and employees to pay. We cannot afford a leadership crisis.””
I studied him.
“Then you should have thought about that before using company funds to finance your personal arrangements.””
He stepped closer.
“You have no idea what it takes to run this business.””
“I know exactly what it takes. I signed the original financing agreements.””
“You signed paperwork. I built the operation.””
“You managed an operation that my father funded and I protected.””
His expression hardened.
“Your father is dead.””
The words echoed through the corridor.
I felt something inside me go quiet.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mr. Pierce, I suggest you choose your next words carefully.””
Camden ignored him.
“Richard never trusted anyone. He kept everything under his control. Even his own daughter.
You think he gave you an empire? He gave you a collection of legal documents and a title.””
I stared at him.
“My father gave me something far more valuable than a title.””
“What?””
“The ability to recognize a man who mistakes access for ownership.””
For the first time, Camden had no immediate answer.
Then Vanessa opened the conference room door.
“Everyone inside, please.””
The board meeting began at nine.
There were eleven directors.
Seven had been appointed through the Alden trust.
Two represented institutional investors.
One represented the employees.
The final seat belonged to Camden.
He had spent years cultivating their support.
He had taken them to dinners, arranged private flights, and promised expansion opportunities.
He believed they owed him loyalty.
But loyalty built on someone else's money was always fragile.
The chairman, Arthur Bennett, called the meeting to order.
“Mrs. Pierce, would you like to begin?””
I stood.
“Thank you, Arthur.””
I placed the flight records on the table.
“Yesterday, an aircraft owned by Pierce Aviation Holdings was used for a trip that was not reflected in its approved business itinerary. The flight included an unauthorized passenger, a private celebration, and expenses charged to the company.””
Camden leaned back.
“This is a misunderstanding.””
I continued.
“Additionally, two million four hundred thousand dollars was transferred to Northstar Advisory, a company whose registered director is Ms. Lila Monroe.””
A director named Helen Ward frowned.
“Who approved the payment?””
Camden raised his hand.
“I did.””
“Where is the contract?””
Vanessa answered.
“The paperwork is being finalized.””
Helen looked at her.
“After the money was transferred?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“It was an advance.””
Arthur removed his glasses.
“An advance for what?””
Camden interrupted.
“The details are commercially sensitive.””
Arthur stared at him.
“Then perhaps you should have kept the transaction off the company books until you had the appropriate approvals.””
I placed another document on the table.
“This is an email from Vanessa Cole outlining a proposed restructuring of the aviation trust's assets.””
Several directors began reading.
Camden's face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“From my father's study.””
He turned sharply toward Daniel.
“You had no right to take that document.””
Daniel remained calm.
“The document was found on property controlled by the trust. It is now part of an internal investigation.””
Vanessa stood.
“This is absurd. The proposed restructuring was intended to protect the company.””
“By transferring assets into a private holding company?”” Arthur asked.
Vanessa said nothing.
I looked at her.
“Who would own that holding company?””
She glanced at Camden.
He shook his head almost imperceptibly.
But it was too late.
Arthur leaned forward.
“Mr. Pierce, answer the question.””
Camden stood.
“This meeting is becoming a circus.””
He pushed his chair back.
Then he looked directly at me.
“You want the truth? Fine. I'll tell everyone.””
The room fell silent.
He pointed toward the documents.
“Vivian has no understanding of how this company actually works. She inherited a trust and spent nine years pretending that made her qualified to lead a business.””
I didn't move.
He continued.
“Every major contract in this company came through me. Every international partnership. Every aircraft acquisition. Every expansion.””
Arthur interrupted.
“Mr. Pierce, several of those contracts were negotiated before your appointment.””
Camden ignored him.
“And now she wants to destroy everything because she caught me having an affair.””
There it was.
He had finally said it.
Not an unauthorized passenger.
Not a questionable transfer.
An affair.
As if the problem were merely a broken marriage.
I stood.
“Camden, I don't care who you sleep with.””
He looked surprised.
“I care when you use company property, employee time, and corporate funds to finance it. I care when you falsify documents. And I care when you attempt to transfer assets that you do not own.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“The restructuring was never going to happen without the necessary signatures.””
I turned toward her.
“Whose signature?””
She looked down.
“Mrs. Pierce's.””
I smiled faintly.
“So you needed my signature.””
Nobody moved.
Camden looked at Vanessa.
She seemed to realize she had said too much.
I continued.
“Which explains the fabricated divorce agreement.””
Arthur's expression hardened.
“Fabricated?””
Daniel placed the document on the table.
“Yes. The signature attributed to Richard Alden was forged. The date printed on the document falls three months after his death.””
The room erupted in whispers.
Camden slammed his hand against the table.
“This is ridiculous!””
Daniel remained composed.
“We have already requested a forensic examination.””
Camden turned toward me.
“You've been planning this.””
“No. I discovered it.””
He laughed bitterly.
“You think you can take everything away from me?””
I looked at him.
“No, Camden. You took everything away from yourself.””
Arthur called for order.
After a brief recess, the directors voted.
Eight supported the temporary suspension of Camden's executive authority.
Two abstained.
Camden voted against it.
He was the only one.
Vanessa was placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
As the meeting ended, Camden remained seated.
He looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not embarrassment.
Hatred.
“You'll regret this,” he whispered.
I gathered my papers.
“I'm already regretting something.””
“What?””
“Marrying you.””
I walked toward the door.
But before I could leave, Daniel caught my arm.
“Vivian.””
“What?””
He handed me a sealed envelope.
It had been delivered to his office that morning.
The sender's name was printed on the back.
*Adrian Cole.*
The private equity attorney Nora had found in Camden's calendar.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Camden standing beside a woman outside a private bank in Zurich.
The woman wasn't Lila.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It was my younger sister.
Charlotte.
