Chapter 8: The Woman Who Wanted My Name

By eight the next morning, Eleanor had assembled a team to review the documents Daniel had provided.

The first task was to preserve the financial records before anyone could alter them. The second was to establish whether Thomas Bennett and Nathan Pierce had knowingly participated in the attempted misuse of my signature.

The third was more personal.

We needed to find out what Vanessa intended to do next.

At nine fifteen, Richard called me into his office.

"Mrs. Whitmore, there's a woman downstairs asking to see you. She says her name is Laura Bennett.""

I looked up from the documents.

"Laura Bennett?""

"Yes. She claims she has information about the financing arrangement.""

Eleanor, who was seated across from me, immediately closed her folder.

"Don't let her leave. We'll meet her together.""

Ten minutes later, Laura Bennett entered the office.

She was in her early thirties, dressed in a plain gray suit, with dark hair pulled into a loose bun. She looked exhausted. Her eyes moved from Eleanor to me, then to Richard standing near the door.

"Mrs. Whitmore," she said, "I know I have no right to ask you to trust me.""

"Then don't ask. Tell me why you're here.""

She sat down and placed a thick envelope on the desk.

"I'm Thomas Bennett's daughter.""

Eleanor's expression sharpened.

"Are you connected to Bennett Advisory Group?""

"Yes. I worked there as an administrative assistant until last week.""

"And Bluewater Consulting?""

Laura nodded.

"It's a company my father set up. I was listed as its registered owner, but I didn't control the accounts.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside were printed emails, invoices, bank transfer summaries, and copies of several draft documents.

One of them was the disputed will.

Another was the authorization letter bearing my signature.

I looked at Laura.

"Why are you bringing these to me?""

She clasped her hands together.

"Because I didn't understand what my father was doing until I saw the final documents. He told me the work was legitimate estate planning for a wealthy client. He said everything had been approved by the family.""

"Which family?""

"The Carter family.""

I exchanged a glance with Eleanor.

Laura continued.

"At first, I believed him. Then I saw the emails between my father and Vanessa Carter. They discussed creating documents that would allow Daniel to obtain temporary voting authority over your company.""

"Did you know my signature was forged?""

She shook her head quickly.

"No. I didn't know until I saw the scanned signature next to the original document in your corporate records. I asked my father about it, and he told me it was none of my business.""

"What happened next?""

"He told me to stop asking questions. When I refused, he said I could lose my job and be charged with helping him if the documents were ever investigated.""

Laura looked down at her hands.

"I panicked. I left the office, but I copied the records first.""

Eleanor leaned forward.

"Do you understand that providing these documents may require you to make a formal statement?""

"Yes.""

"And that your own involvement will be examined?""

Laura nodded.

"I understand.""

I studied her carefully.

She was frightened, but she had come forward knowing the consequences might reach her, too.

That was more courage than I had seen from my son in weeks.

"What did Vanessa want?"" I asked.

Laura took a breath.

"She wanted your signature on a revised authorization. But when your attorney's office flagged the first document, my father suggested using an estate-planning agreement to establish that you had already intended to transfer control of the company to Daniel.""

"Why?""

"Because if the will appeared consistent with your other documents, he believed it would be harder to challenge.""

Eleanor's expression turned cold.

"That is not how a valid will is established.""

"I know that now," Laura said.

"But my father insisted that the paperwork would never be examined closely because the family would settle the matter privately.""

I looked at the documents.

One email from Vanessa caught my attention.

Margaret will resist at first. She always does. But Daniel will convince her eventually. Once she understands that the arrangement is temporary, she'll sign.

Another message, sent two days later, was more revealing.

If she refuses, we need a separate document showing that she intended to leave the resort to Daniel. That way, she can't claim we acted against her wishes.

I felt a chill move through me.

Vanessa had been planning for my refusal.

She had anticipated that I might discover the scheme and had prepared another story to use against me.

"Did Daniel know about the will?"" I asked.

Laura hesitated.

"I can't say what he knew. I saw emails between him and Vanessa discussing the financing arrangement, but I didn't see him approve the will itself.""

"Did he know about the forged authorization?""

"I saw one message where he asked Vanessa whether the documents were legitimate. She replied that everything had been reviewed by the advisers.""

Eleanor wrote something in her notebook.

"Do you have the original emails?""

Laura nodded.

"They're stored in a secure archive. I can provide access through my attorney.""

"Good. Don't alter or delete anything. We'll arrange the proper transfer.""

Laura stood, then stopped beside the door.

"Mrs. Whitmore?""

"Yes?""

"I'm sorry.""

I looked at her.

"For what?""

"For helping create the company records without understanding what they were being used for. I should have asked more questions.""

I considered her words.

"You can't change what happened. But you can tell the truth now.""

She nodded and left with Eleanor's assistant, who had been waiting outside.

After the door closed, Richard spoke.

"Mrs. Whitmore, do you want me to contact security about Mrs. Carter?""

"Not yet. We need to follow the proper process.""

Eleanor gathered the papers.

"We now have enough information to move forward with a formal investigation. The next step is to notify the relevant authorities and the lender.""

"Do it.""

She paused.

"There's something else you should know. One of the documents Laura provided refers to a meeting scheduled for this afternoon.""

"Where?""

"At your Charleston home.""

My chest tightened.

"Why would they meet there?""

"The invitation describes it as a family estate-planning meeting. It appears Vanessa intended to bring a notary and two witnesses.""

I stared at the paper.

"Was I invited?""

"No.""

Of course I wasn't.

Vanessa had planned to use my own house as the setting for a meeting about my estate without my knowledge.

"What time?""

"Three o'clock.""

I checked my watch.

It was nearly ten.

"Then we'd better find out exactly what she intends to do.""

Eleanor contacted the authorities and arranged for the evidence to be preserved. We did not intend to stage a confrontation or interfere with the investigation. If Vanessa planned to present fraudulent documents, the proper people needed to know before anyone signed anything.

At noon, Daniel came to my suite.

He looked as if he had aged ten years overnight.

"Laura Bennett contacted me," he said.

"She told us she was coming forward.""

He sat down.

"Vanessa is furious. She says Laura stole confidential documents and is trying to extort money from us.""

"Did she tell you that the documents were false?""

Daniel looked away.

"No.""

"Then why are you defending her?""

He rubbed his hands together.

"I'm not defending her. I'm trying to understand what's happening.""

I studied him.

"Daniel, you signed a financing acknowledgment knowing my shares were being offered as collateral. You knew I had not authorized it. Now you know someone prepared a will in my name, and your wife is threatening people who have evidence.""

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

"What are you going to do?""

He took a long breath.

"I'm going to tell the truth.""

The words were simple.

But I had waited weeks to hear them.

"All of it?"" I asked.

"All of it.""

"Even if it means your business fails?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Even if it means Vanessa faces consequences?""

His jaw tightened.

"I don't know what will happen to our marriage. But I can't keep lying for her.""

I looked at my son for a long moment.

There was no instant forgiveness.

No embrace.

No miraculous return to the boy I remembered.

But there was a decision.

And it was his.

"Then speak to Eleanor," I said.

"Tell her everything you know. Don't leave anything out because you're ashamed.""

He nodded.

"I will.""

That afternoon, I returned to Charleston with Eleanor and a security officer from the resort. We traveled separately from Daniel, who had agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

When we arrived at my house, the front door was locked.

A car sat in the driveway.

Vanessa's white SUV.

I used my key and entered.

The house smelled of lemon polish and fresh flowers. A stack of papers lay on the dining table beside a silver pen and a bottle of sparkling water.

Two strangers stood near the window.

One was a notary.

The other was a middle-aged man in a dark suit.

Vanessa stood at the head of the table.

When she saw me, her face turned white.

"Margaret.""

I set my handbag on the console.

"Hello, Vanessa.""

She glanced at Eleanor, then at the security officer.

"What is this?""

"I believe that's my question.""

The man in the suit gathered the papers.

"Mrs. Whitmore, we're here at Mrs. Carter's invitation for a private estate-planning consultation.""

"Did I request one?""

He hesitated.

"No, ma'am.""

"Did I authorize you to prepare documents concerning my estate?""

"No.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"This is a family matter. You have no right to bring strangers into our home.""

I looked around the dining room.

"My home, Vanessa.""

She flushed.

"You know what I mean.""

"Unfortunately, I do.""

Eleanor approached the table and examined the documents without touching them.

"Mrs. Carter, are these intended to be signed by Mrs. Whitmore today?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"That's between Margaret and me.""

"Then you won't object to us documenting the meeting.""

Vanessa turned toward the notary.

"Don't say anything. You have no authority to discuss this with them.""

The notary looked uncomfortable.

"Mrs. Carter, I was told Mrs. Whitmore had agreed to attend.""

"She has now arrived," Vanessa snapped.

"So let's proceed.""

I looked at the first page.

It was a proposed family settlement agreement.

The document stated that I would voluntarily transfer a portion of my voting rights to Daniel, forgive his outstanding debts, and waive any claims relating to the disputed financial transactions.

In exchange, Daniel would receive a future interest in Serenity Cove Holdings.

Vanessa had prepared a way to make my silence look like consent.

I lifted my eyes.

"Why would I sign this?""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Because you're destroying your son's life.""

"No. I'm refusing to surrender my company.""

"He's your only child!""

"And that gives him the right to forge my signature?""

The notary looked up sharply.

Vanessa went still.

For one brief moment, the room was silent.

Then she laughed.

"You have no proof that I forged anything.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"We have documentary evidence that has been provided to the appropriate authorities. We will not discuss the details here.""

Vanessa's face lost its color.

She turned toward Daniel, who had just entered through the front door.

"You brought them here?""

Daniel stopped.

"Vanessa, I didn't know you were planning this meeting.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"I'm not.""

She pointed at me.

"Your mother is trying to ruin us. She's going to take everything.""

Daniel looked at the documents on the table.

Then he looked at his wife.

"No," he said quietly.

"She isn't. She is trying to stop us from taking everything from her.""

Vanessa stared at him as if he had struck her.

"You ungrateful coward.""

Daniel flinched, but he didn't look away.

"I should have told the truth weeks ago.""

"Then do it now," she snapped.

"Tell her what you did.""

He swallowed.

"I signed the financing acknowledgment. I knew the lender wanted authority over the shares. I agreed to the arrangement because I wanted to save my business. But I did not authorize the will, and I will not lie about what happened.""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

She grabbed her handbag and moved toward the door.

The security officer stepped aside to give her room, but Eleanor spoke before she could leave.

"Mrs. Carter, the authorities have been notified of the suspected document fraud. You are free to leave, but we ask that you preserve all relevant records and refrain from destroying any documents.""

Vanessa stopped.

Then she turned to me.

"You think you've won.""

I looked at her.

"No, Vanessa. I think the truth has finally arrived.""

She walked out.

The front door slammed behind her.

Daniel sank into a chair.

I stood beside the dining table, looking at the unsigned settlement agreement.

For the first time in weeks, I felt that we had stopped chasing the lies and begun facing the truth.

But Eleanor was reading the final page of the agreement.

Her expression changed.

"Margaret," she said slowly, "you need to see this clause.""

I moved beside her.

At the bottom of the page was a paragraph stating that, upon execution of the agreement, I would relinquish any future claim to the estate of Thomas Whitmore, including a parcel of land held separately from Serenity Cove.

I recognized the property immediately.

The old coastal cottage where Thomas and I had spent our first anniversary.

The place where we had planned to retire.

The place I had believed was protected by a separate deed.

I looked at Eleanor.

"Why is this included?""

She turned the page over.

There, in the margin, was a handwritten instruction.

May you like

Secure cottage title before finalizing resort transfer.

And beside it was Thomas Bennett's signature.
