Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Money
The document lay between the untouched dinner plates.
I read the heading once.
Then again.
*Joint Property Loan Agreement.*
Beneath it were my name, Ethan's name, and the address of the small commercial property my grandmother had left me when she died.
For years, I had rented that property to a local florist. The income wasn't enormous, but it had helped pay for Noah's extracurricular activities, household expenses, and the occasional trip Ethan and I had taken together.
It was mine.
My grandmother had bought it decades before I met Ethan, and she had made sure the deed passed directly to me.
I had never considered it something that needed protecting from my husband.
Now I wished I had.
“What is this?”” I asked.
Ethan's eyes moved toward David.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the lender,” David replied.
“After I found a letter addressed to Vanessa about a property loan.””
Ethan's expression hardened.
“You had no right to contact my lender.””
“I didn't. I contacted the company named on the letter.””
David turned to me.
“Claire, did you authorize a loan against your property?””
“No.””
My answer came so quickly that it startled even me.
Ethan leaned forward.
“Let me explain.””
“Please do.””
He rubbed his hands together.
“The business needed capital. I was exploring an investment opportunity.””
“With my property?””
“Our property.””
“No. My grandmother left it to me.””
“We're married, Claire. What's yours is mine, and what's mine is yours.””
I looked at him for a long moment.
“Is that what you told the bank?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation frightened me more than any confession could have.
“Ethan?””
“The paperwork was preliminary.””
“Did you sign my name?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
David slid another page toward me.
“Look at the signature.””
I stared at the document.
My name appeared at the bottom, written in the distinctive slant I used when signing official papers.
It looked like mine.
But it wasn't.
I knew because I always crossed the letter t in Claire with a long, deliberate stroke. On this signature, the line was short and awkward.
Someone had copied my handwriting.
I looked at Ethan.
“Did you do this?””
He shook his head.
“Absolutely not.””
“Then who did?””
He glanced at Vanessa.
She began crying harder.
“Ethan, please. Tell her.””
He turned sharply.
“Don't.””
David stood.
“Don't what? Tell the truth?””
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
“I know exactly what I'm doing. I'm asking why my wife has been receiving money from you, why you have a loan application against Claire's property, and why the two of you have been meeting in secret.””
Ethan's voice rose.
“The money was an investment.””
“What investment?””
“A business opportunity.””
“Then why was it transferred to Vanessa's personal account?””
“Because she was helping me manage the transaction.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You told me the money was a gift.””
Ethan stared at her.
“Not now.””
“You said Claire would never know because it was coming from the company account.””
My blood ran cold.
“The company account?””
Ethan turned toward me.
“Claire, I can explain.””
I laughed once, a sharp, disbelieving sound.
“You keep saying that. But every explanation creates another question.””
I picked up the loan agreement.
“How long have you been using my property to secure your business dealings?””
“I'm not using it.””
“Then why is it on this document?””
“Because I was considering the possibility.””
“With a forged signature?””
He said nothing.
The room seemed to tilt around me.
I had spent seven years trusting him with the ordinary details of our life. I had let him handle insurance renewals, household accounts, and the paperwork that accumulated whenever two people built a home together.
I had assumed that marriage meant I didn't need to check every page he placed in front of me.
Now I wondered how many things I had signed without understanding them.
“Did you ever submit this?”” I asked.
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
David interrupted.
“The lender confirmed that an application was submitted. They haven't approved it because the property records don't match the signature on file.””
I looked at him.
“You contacted the lender?””
“I asked whether the document was legitimate after I found the letter. They told me there was an application under review.””
He hesitated.
“They wouldn't share all the details with me, but they confirmed the property address and the date.””
I turned to Ethan.
“You tried to borrow against my property.””
“I was trying to help us.””
“By forging my signature?””
“I didn't forge anything!””
His shout echoed through the dining room.
No one moved.
Then, from the hallway, a small voice said, “Dad?””
We all turned.
Noah stood in the doorway, still wearing his school jacket. His backpack hung from one shoulder, and his face was pale.
He must have arrived while we were arguing.
I immediately stepped toward him.
“Sweetheart, how long have you been standing there?””
“Long enough.””
His eyes moved from Ethan to Vanessa, then to David.
“Why is everyone yelling?””
Ethan's expression changed instantly.
He straightened his shirt and forced a smile.
“It's nothing, buddy. Just grown-up business.””
Noah looked at the papers scattered across the table.
“Is Claire in trouble?””
My heart broke.
“No,” I said, kneeling in front of him.
“I'm not in trouble.””
He looked unconvinced.
“Then why does Dad look scared?””
Ethan's smile disappeared.
“Noah, go upstairs, please.””
“But—”
“Now.””
Noah flinched.
I stood and placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Don't speak to him like that.””
Ethan stared at me.
“Claire, don't interfere.””
“I'm not interfering. He's a child, and he's frightened.””
Noah looked up at me.
“Is Mom leaving?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
David closed his eyes.
Ethan looked away.
I crouched again.
“I don't know what your parents are going to decide, sweetheart. But none of this is your fault. Do you understand?””
Noah nodded slowly.
“Can I stay with you?””
The question nearly undid me.
“Of course you can.””
I took his backpack and led him into the living room. I put on his favorite cartoon and brought him a glass of water.
He sat quietly on the sofa, twisting the sleeve of his jacket.
“Claire?””
“Yes?””
“Did Mom do something bad?””
I sat beside him.
“I think the adults need to have an honest conversation.””
“That's what Dad says when he doesn't want to answer.””
I stared at him.
He looked down at his hands.
“Sometimes, when Mom calls, Dad tells me to go to my room. Then he talks to her for a long time.””
My heart beat faster.
“When does that happen?””
“Sometimes at night. Sometimes when we're in the car.””
“Does he tell you what they're talking about?””
Noah shook his head.
“He says it's private.””
I gently brushed his hair away from his forehead.
“You don't have to figure any of this out, Noah. That's our job.””
He leaned against me.
For a few minutes, we watched the cartoon without speaking.
Then he whispered, “I don't want you to leave.””
I kissed the top of his head.
“I'm not going anywhere tonight.””
It was the only promise I could make honestly.
When I returned to the dining room, David was standing by the window. Vanessa sat with her face in her hands. Ethan was pacing beside the table.
He stopped when he saw me.
“Claire, we need to talk privately.””
“No.””
His jaw tightened.
“Can you stop saying that?””
“Can you stop asking me to have conversations in private when you've spent months keeping secrets?””
He lowered his voice.
“I'm trying to protect our marriage.””
“From the truth?””
He looked at me.
For a moment, I thought he might finally tell me everything.
Instead, he said, “You don't understand the pressure I've been under.””
“Then help me understand.””
He stared at the floor.
“The business has been struggling.””
“How badly?””
“Badly enough that I needed money to keep it running.””
“And you thought my property was the solution?””
“I thought it was an option.””
“You thought you could put my inheritance at risk without telling me?””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When? After the bank approved the loan?””
He flinched.
I had my answer.
David spoke quietly from the window.
“That's not the only thing he hasn't told you.””
Ethan spun around.
“Stay out of this.””
“No.””
David's voice was suddenly firm.
“You've dragged my marriage into your financial mess. You don't get to tell me when I can speak.””
He turned to me.
“Claire, I discovered that the money Ethan sent Vanessa wasn't the only transfer. There were several payments over the past six months.””
“How much?””
David swallowed.
“Altogether, more than a hundred and twenty thousand dollars.””
I grabbed the back of a chair.
Ethan's business had been struggling.
Vanessa had received money.
My property had been used in a loan application.
And none of us knew where the money had gone.
“Where is it now?”” I asked.
Vanessa lifted her head.
“Some of it went toward Ethan's business. Some of it paid off debts.””
“Whose debts?””
She looked at Ethan.
He shook his head at her.
But Vanessa had reached the point where fear was no longer enough to keep her silent.
“His business debts,” she whispered.
“And some of mine.””
David stared at her.
“You told me we were financially secure.””
“I thought we were.””
“You thought?””
She began crying again.
“I was trying to help him.””
“Why?””
She looked at Ethan.
And then she said something that made every other question in the room seem suddenly insignificant.
“Because Ethan promised me that when everything was settled, we'd be together again.””
I stared at my husband.
He didn't deny it.
He didn't even look surprised.
He simply closed his eyes.
And in that moment, I understood that the woman at my dinner table wasn't the only person who had betrayed me.
My husband had been planning a future with his ex-wife while using my money to keep his present life intact.
But David wasn't finished.
He reached into his jacket and removed his phone.
“There's one more thing,” he said.
“A message I haven't shown you.””
Ethan took a step toward him.
“David, don't.””
David looked directly at me.
“It's from your husband. And it explains why he was so determined to have Vanessa here tonight.””
He turned the screen toward me.
The message was dated four days earlier.
I read it once.
Then I read it again.
After Claire signs the final documents, everything will be easier. She trusts me. She won't ask questions.
My legs nearly gave way.
I looked up at Ethan.
“What final documents?””
He opened his mouth.
May you like
But this time, before he could say a word, Vanessa spoke.
“Claire, you need to know what he planned to do with your house.””
