Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Rebecca leaned closer to the phone.
“Michael, this is Rebecca Shaw, Carter House's general counsel. Are you saying Vanessa Reed signed an authorization in Ethan's name?””
“Yes.””
“Did you witness the signature?””
“I witnessed her sign the document.””
“Then why did you allow it?””
Michael's breathing became uneven.
“Because Daniel told me the authorization had already been approved. He said Ethan had agreed to the information-sharing arrangement.””
“I did not,” I said.
“I know that now.””
“Did you know it then?””
Silence.
That was answer enough.
I looked at Rebecca.
She held up one finger, signaling me not to interrupt.
“Michael,” she said, “I need you to answer carefully. Did you knowingly submit a document bearing a false signature?””
“I didn't submit it. Vanessa did.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Michael swallowed audibly.
“Yes. I knew the signature wasn't Ethan's.””
My office seemed to grow smaller.
“Why?”” I asked.
He sounded exhausted.
“Daniel promised that Reed Capital would invest fifteen million dollars in Carter House. He said the money would fund three new locations, refinance our equipment loans, and give us enough cash to expand without taking on additional debt.””
“So you decided to give him access to confidential financial records?””
“He said the authorization was a formality.””
“And you believed him?””
“No,” Michael admitted.
“Not entirely.””
Rebecca closed her eyes briefly.
“Where is the original document?””
“In the Reed Capital office. I have a scanned copy.””
“Send it to our legal team. Do not delete anything, do not contact Daniel, and do not discuss this with anyone else.””
Michael hesitated.
“Ethan, there's more.””
I looked at Rebecca.
“Go on.””
“Vanessa didn't sign your name because she was trying to impersonate you.””
“What does that mean?””
“She signed it because Daniel told her the authorization would protect her.””
“Protect her from what?””
Michael's voice dropped.
“He said Carter House was about to collapse financially. He told her you were hiding debts, that your company was weeks away from default, and that the investment would save the business.””
I stared at the computer screen.
Our company was profitable. We had liabilities, like every growing business, but we were nowhere near default.
“Why would she believe that?”” I asked.
“Because Daniel showed her documents.””
“What documents?””
“I don't know. She brought them to the meeting. She said she wanted to make sure the investment wouldn't put her personal assets at risk.””
Rebecca interrupted.
“Michael, did Vanessa have any legal authority to sign on behalf of Carter House?””
“No.””
“Did anyone tell her she did?””
“Daniel said Ethan had given verbal approval.””
I looked at Rebecca.
She wrote three words on a notepad.
*Preserve all evidence.*
“Michael,” I said, “you are suspended from all financial and document-access duties effective immediately. Do not enter the company systems. Our counsel will contact you about the next steps.””
He didn't argue.
“Understood.””
Before I ended the call, he spoke again.
“Ethan?””
“Yes?””
“I'm sorry.””
I stared at the desk.
“I hope you understand that an apology isn't the same as accountability.””
“I do.””
The line went dead.
Rebecca immediately called our IT director and instructed him to preserve the relevant audit logs, access records, and document versions.
Then she contacted outside counsel.
I sat in silence while the calls continued.
Vanessa had spent the previous evening mocking me for serving drinks in my own restaurant.
Now there was evidence that she had signed a document using my name.
But the more I thought about it, the less I believed the two incidents were unrelated.
“What did Michael mean when he said Daniel wanted to protect Vanessa?”” I asked.
Rebecca opened a new document.
“Possibly nothing. But we need to understand the financial arrangement between them.””
“Can we request it?””
“We can ask. We cannot compel disclosure without the appropriate legal process.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Then let's find out what we can lawfully verify.””
At noon, Rebecca returned with an initial report from the company's records team.
The document had been uploaded from a workstation assigned to Michael.
The signature block contained my name, but the digital record showed that Vanessa had signed the physical copy.
More concerning was the access schedule.
The authorization allowed Reed Capital to review confidential financial records, including vendor agreements, projected revenue, and internal expansion plans.
It also allowed the recipient to share certain information with designated financial advisers.
One adviser was listed by name.
*Grant Mercer, Mercer Strategic Holdings.*
I recognized the name from an old dispute involving a former restaurant group that had tried to force independent operators into unfavorable franchise agreements.
Mercer had a reputation for buying distressed businesses and stripping them for parts.
“Why is he involved?”” I asked.
Rebecca shook her head.
“We don't know yet.””
At 1:15, Olivia called from downstairs.
“Ethan, Vanessa Reed is here.””
I looked at Rebecca.
“Alone?””
“No. Daniel is waiting outside.””
“Did they make an appointment?””
“No. Vanessa said it was urgent and that she needed to speak with the owner.””
I glanced at the signed authorization on my desk.
“Bring her to the private dining room. Have someone remain nearby, and make sure the meeting is recorded in accordance with our policies.””
Rebecca gathered the documents.
“I'll sit in.””
Vanessa entered five minutes later.
The woman who had laughed at my uniform the night before looked as though she hadn't slept. Her makeup was uneven, her hands trembled around the strap of her handbag, and she kept glancing toward the door.
She didn't sit until I invited her to.
“Ethan,” she began, “I need you to listen to me.””
“I'm listening.””
She took a folded sheet of paper from her bag.
“I made a terrible mistake.””
“Which one?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Signing the authorization.””
I remained still.
“Why did you sign it?””
“Daniel said it was a routine document. He told me you had already agreed to it and that the company needed my signature to confirm that the investment wouldn't affect our personal finances.””
“Why would your signature be relevant to Carter House?””
“I didn't understand that part.””
“Yet you signed.””
She lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
Rebecca placed the document on the table.
“Did you understand that the form gave Reed Capital access to confidential company information?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. Daniel told me it was a standard financial disclosure.””
“Did you read it?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I read some of it.””
“Did you ask a lawyer to review it?””
“No.””
“Did you ask Ethan for permission?””
She looked at me.
“No.””
I let the silence settle.
Then I asked the question that had been troubling me since Michael's call.
“Vanessa, why did Daniel believe he needed you to sign this document?””
She twisted the paper between her fingers.
“Because he said your company was in trouble.””
“Carter House isn't in financial distress.””
“I know that now.””
“Did Daniel show you evidence that it was?””
She nodded.
“He showed me a report. It had your company's name on it, along with debt figures and projected losses.””
Rebecca leaned forward.
“Do you still have that report?””
“I think so.””
“Where?””
“At home. Daniel keeps most of his business documents in a locked cabinet in his office.””
I watched her face.
“Why are you telling us this now?””
Vanessa looked down at the tablecloth.
For the first time, she seemed to understand the weight of what she'd done.
“Because last night, after Daniel realized you owned Carter House, he started making phone calls. I heard him arguing with someone in the study. He said the original plan had failed and that you were going to investigate the authorization.””
“And?””
“And he said they needed to move the money before you discovered what they'd done.””
Rebecca's expression changed.
“What money?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know. I only heard part of the conversation.””
I leaned forward.
“Vanessa, I need you to be precise. Did Daniel say whose money he wanted to move?””
She closed her eyes.
Then she whispered, “Yours.””
The room fell silent.
Rebecca slowly placed her pen on the table.
“Are you certain?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He said the funds were already scheduled to transfer. He said that if the transfer went through before anyone noticed, you wouldn't be able to stop it.””
My phone rang.
Our finance director's replacement, who had been overseeing the bank reconciliation, was calling.
I answered immediately.
“Ethan,” he said, his voice tight.
“You need to get to the main office. There's a pending transfer request against one of our operating accounts.””
“How much?””
“Four million eight hundred thousand dollars.””
I stood.
“Who authorized it?””
He paused.
Then he gave me a name.
“Ethan, the request was submitted under your credentials.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Rebecca was already reaching for her phone.
I stared at the document on the table, at the forged authorization, and at the woman who had once laughed at my dream of building something of my own.
The humiliation at table twelve had been personal.

The attack on Carter House was something else entirely.
And the transfer was scheduled to clear in less than two hours.
