Chapter 8: The Woman Who Came Back Begging

When we arrived at Carter House, the restaurant was preparing for the evening rush.

Servers moved between tables carrying trays of appetizers. The kitchen doors swung open and shut. The pianist was testing the opening notes of a familiar jazz standard.

Everything looked normal.

That was what frightened me.

Richard stood near the host station with a tall man in a gray suit. The man held a leather portfolio and wore an expression of polished impatience.

Beside him stood Brittany Collins.

She had changed out of the outfit she wore the previous evening. Today, her jacket was cream-colored, her hair perfectly arranged, and her diamond stood near the host station with a tall man in a gray suit. The man held a leather portfolio and wore an expression of polished impatience.

Beside him stood Brittany Collins.

She had changed out of the outfit she wore the previous evening. Today, her jacket was cream-colored, her hair perfectly arranged, and her diamond necklace replaced by a delicate gold chain.

She looked composed.

But when she saw me, her eyes moved immediately to Evelyn and Paul.

Then she noticed the protective case in Paul's hand.

Her composure cracked.

"Daniel," she said, hurrying toward me.

"Thank God. I've been trying to reach you.""

I stopped several feet away.

"Why are you here?""

She necklace replaced by a delicate gold chain.

She glanced at the man in the gray suit.

"This is Stephen Ward. He's our corporate counsel. We need to discuss the hotel partnership privately.""

"No," I said.

"We don't.""

Her eyebrows rose.

"Excuse me?""

"The partnership is under review. Any communication about it needs to go through our legal teams.""

"This isn't just about the partnership.""

She lowered glanced at the man in the gray suit.

She lowered her voice.

"Please. We need to talk.""

The words were so different from the ones she'd used the night before that I almost failed to recognize her.

The woman who had threatened to have my staff fired was now asking for a private conversation.

I wondered whether she had finally understood what she had done.

Then I remembered the photograph of her voice.

"Please. We need to talk.""

The words were so different from the ones she'd used the night before that I almost failed to recognize her.

The woman who had threatened to have my staff fired was now asking for a private conversation.

I wondered whether she had finally understood what she had done.

Then I remembered the photograph of my father.

"What do you know about Victor Hale?"" I asked.

Brittany went completely still.

Stephen Ward stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter, I don't believe that's relevant to the business matter we're here to discuss.""

"It became my father.

"What do you know about Victor Hale?"" I asked.

Brittany went completely still.

Stephen Ward stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter, I don't believe that's relevant to the business matter we're here to discuss.""

"It became relevant when someone sent me a photograph of my father and threatened my family.""

Brittany looked at Stephen.

He gave her a warning glance.

I saw it.

So did Evelyn.

"Daniel," Brittany said carefully, "I don't know what you've been told, but I can assure you that whatever happened years ago has nothing to do with our current proposal.""

"Then relevant when someone sent me a photograph of my father and threatened my family.""

Brittany looked at Stephen.

He gave her a warning glance.

I saw it.

So did Evelyn.

"Daniel," Brittany said carefully, "I don't know what you've been told, but I can assure you that whatever happened years ago has nothing to do with our current proposal.""

"Then you won't mind explaining why Victor Hale called my mother's bank yesterday.""

Her lips parted.

For a moment, the polished expression disappeared completely.

"How do you know about that?""

The question answered itself.

I took a step closer.

"Because the bank manager told me. Now I'm asking you won't mind explaining why Victor Hale called my mother's bank yesterday.""

Her lips parted.

For a moment, the polished expression disappeared completely.

"How do you know about that?""

The question answered itself.

I took a step closer.

"Because the bank manager told me. Now I'm asking you again. What do you know about Victor Hale?""

Brittany looked toward the dining room.

Several guests were watching us.

She lowered her voice further.

"Not here.""

"You chose to come here.""

"Daniel, please.""

There was something in her expression that I hadn't seen the night before.

Fear.

Not embarrassment. Not the indign you again.

Not the indignation of someone accustomed to getting her way.

Real fear.

But I had learned not to confuse fear with honesty.

"Have your attorney contact Evelyn," I said.

"If you have information relevant to the financial review, provide it in writing.""

She reached for my sleeve.

I stepped back before she could touch me.

"Don't do this.""

"Do what?""

"Destroyation of someone accustomed to getting her way.

Real fear.

But I had learned not to confuse fear with honesty.

"Do what?""

"Destroy everything over a misunderstanding.""

I stared at her.

"Someone threatened my mother.""

"I didn't threaten your mother.""

"Then tell me who did.""

She looked away.

That was when I understood that she knew more than she wanted to admit.

Richard approached from the host station.

"Daniel, the man who came in with everything over a misunderstanding.""

I stared at her.

"Someone threatened my mother.""

"I didn't threaten your mother.""

"Then tell me who did.""

She looked away.

That was when I understood that she knew more than she wanted to admit.

Richard approached from the host station.

"Daniel, the man who came in with Ms. Collins says he has authority to inspect our corporate records.""

Stephen Ward opened his portfolio.

"My client is a proposed investment partner. We have contractual rights concerning the due diligence process.""

Evelyn held out her hand.

"Please show me the agreement granting those rights.""

Stephen hesitated.

Then he removed a document.

Evelyn read it carefully.

"This Ms. Collins says he has authority to inspect our corporate records.""

Stephen Ward opened his portfolio.

Evelyn held out her hand.

"Please show me the agreement granting those rights.""

Stephen hesitated.

Then he removed a document.

Evelyn read it carefully.

"This agreement is unsigned.""

"It was circulated for execution.""

"Then it isn't an executed agreement.""

"It reflects the parties' intentions.""

"It does not authorize you to inspect private records.""

She handed it back.

"Any further request should be submitted through counsel.""

Stephen's jaw tightened.

Brittany looked from agreement is unsigned.""

She handed it back.

Stephen's jaw tightened.

Brittany looked from him to me.

"You're making a mistake, Daniel.""

"Perhaps. But I'm not going to let anyone into my company's records without proper authorization.""

She turned sharply toward the entrance.

Then stopped.

"Can I speak to you for five minutes?""

I considered refusing.

But if she knew something about Victor Hale, I needed to hear it.

"Five him to me.

"Five minutes. Richard will remain present, and Evelyn will document the conversation.""

Brittany looked offended.

"You think I'm going to lie to you?""

"I think the truth should be able to survive being documented.""

She pressed her lips together.

We moved into a small private dining room.

Stephen stayed outside with Evelyn, while Richard minutes. Richard will remain present, and Evelyn will document the conversation.""

Stephen stayed outside with Evelyn, while Richard stood near the door.

Brittany sat opposite me and placed her purse on the table.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she removed her phone and opened a photograph.

It showed an older man standing beside a construction site. He had dark hair, a narrow face, and a scar through his left eyebrow.

Victor Hale.

"I've known him since I was a teenager," she said.

"My father used him as a financial adviser. Victor helped arrange loans for several of his projects.""

"Was he involved in the construction project my father worked on?""

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

"Yes.""

The admission came quietly.

"Did you know my father?""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"I don't know.""

She looked down.

"I heard them arguing afterward. Victor said your father had copies of the original payment records.""

"And my father told him to recover the documents before they caused more trouble.""

I stared at her.

"Did you know what that meant?""

"Not then.""

"Do you know now?""

Brittany swallowed.

"Yes.""

The word hung between us.

I wanted to stand, to demand every answer she"And?""

I wanted to stand, to demand every answer she had withheld. Instead, I forced myself to remain seated.

"Why didn't you say something last night?""

She laughed once, without humor.

"Because I thought you were nobody.""

The honesty was brutal.

She seemed to realize it as soon as the words left her mouth.

She fell silent.

I leaned forward.

"You saw a man wearing an apron and decided he was beneath you. You saw a young waitress doing her job and threatened to destroy her livelihood. You watched your husband ask you to stop, and you humiliated him in front of his friends.""

I paused.

"And now you're here because you think I have something silent.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

"I know how that looks.""

"It looks exactly like what happened.""

She wiped her face with a tissue.

"My father died six years ago. Before he died, he told me that Victor had been using his company to move money between projects. He said the arrangements were legal you need.""

"It looks exactly like what happened.""

She wiped her face with a tissue.

"My father died six years ago. Before he died, he told me that Victor had been using his company to move money between projects. He said the arrangements were legal, but complicated. He said I should never question Victor because he knew things about our family that could destroy us.""

"And you believed him?""

"I was young. I had just inherited part of the company. Victor controlled the financing, and I was afraid of losing everything.""

"So you continued working with him.""

"Yes.""

"Even after you learned about the altered investment agreements?""

She looked at me sharply.

"How do you know about those?""

"Thomas Reed.""

Her face drained of color.

For the first time, she looked less like a powerful business do you know about those?""

"Thomas Reed.""

Her face drained of color.

For the first time, she looked less like a powerful businesswoman and more like someone trapped by decisions she had made years earlier.

"Thomas wasn't supposed to have those documents.""

"Why?""

"Because Victor took them.""

Richard shifted beside the door.

Brittany lowered her voice.

"He told me Thomas had signed the revised agreement. He said the dispute was over a consulting fee and that Thomas was trying to extort money from us.""

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to believe him.""

I waited.

She looked down at her hands.

"Daniel, I didn't send those photographs. I swear I didn't.""

"Then who did?""

"I don't know. But Victor has been calling me all morning. He knows you found the old records, and he's furious.""

"What does, I didn't send those photographs. I swear I didn't.""

"Then who did?""

"I don't know. But Victor has been calling me all morning. He knows you found the old records, and he's furious.""

"What does he want?""

"He wants the hotel partnership approved on Monday. He says the financing has to close before the end of the month.""

"Why?""

She shook her head.

"He wouldn't tell me.""

"Then why are you helping him?""

"I'm not trying to help him anymore.""

I studied her face.

"Prove it.""

She opened her purse and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a printed email from Victor Hale.

The subject line read:

*CARTER — FINAL RESOLUTION*

The message was short.

*Ensure Daniel Carter withdraws from the partnership review. If he refuses, activate the contingency plan. The old records must not reach her face.

*CARTER — FINAL RESOLUTION*

The message was short.

At the bottom was a second message, forwarded from another account.

The original file is still missing. Without it, the Carter matter remains unresolved investigators.

I looked up.

"What original file?""

Brittany shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"You're telling me you've been working with this man for years, and you don't know what he's trying to hide?""

"I know he has leverage over my company. I know he's been moving money through investment entities. And I know he believes your father's records can expose him.""

She leaned closer.

"Out of what?""

"All of it.""

I looked at the email again.

"You want me to believe that you're suddenly I want out.""

"Out of what?""

"All of it.""

I looked at the email again.

"You want me to believe that you're suddenly willing to cooperate because you've discovered Victor is dangerous?""

"No.""

She met my eyes.

"I want you to believe that I'm finally willing to stop pretending I don't know what he's doing.""

It was the first thing she had said that sounded like accountability rather than self-preservation.

But it wasn't enough.

"Then you'll give Evelyn every willing to cooperate because you've discovered Victor is dangerous?""

"No.""

She met my eyes.

"I want you to believe that I'm finally willing to stop pretending I don't know what he's doing.""

It was the first thing she had said that sounded like accountability rather than self-preservation.

But it wasn't enough.

"Then you'll give Evelyn every document you have. You'll cooperate with the investigation. And you'll tell the truth about Thomas Reed.""

She nodded quickly.

"Yes.""

"And the people who lost money because of your company's financing arrangements?""

Her face tightened.

"I can't promise what the investigation will find.""

"Good. Don't promise anything. Tell the truth.""

She stood.

For a moment, I thought she would leave.

"Daniel, there's one thing you need to understand about the message threatening your mother.""

I waited.

"Victor doesn't just know about your father's records.""

Her eyes filled with tears again.

"He knows where the original file is.""

Before I could ask another question, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen and froze.

The caller ID displayed a single name.

*Victor Hale.*

She answered.

"Hello?""

I watched the color drain from her face.

Then she whispered, "No. I didn't tell him anything.""

A voice crackled through the speaker.

Even about your father's records.""

Even from across the table, I recognized it from the recording.

Victor Hale.

"You have five minutes to leave that restaurant," he said.

"And if Daniel Carter is still standing beside you when I arrive, neither of you will leave with the evidence.""

The call ended.

Brittany lowered the phone.

Richard reached from across the table, I recognized it from the recording.

Richard reached for the door.

Evelyn appeared in the corridor.

And outside the restaurant's front windows, a black sedan had just pulled to the curb.

A man with a scar through his left eyebrow stepped out.
