Chapter 7: The Secret Before I Was Born

I read the letter three times.

Not because I didn’t understand it.

Because I couldn’t accept it.

My father had written every word with the patience of someone waiting for a conversation that might never happen.

He didn’t write like an angry man.

He wrote like a father trying to reach his daughter through time.

“Paige,

If you are holding this letter, then you finally know that I never abandoned you.

I need you to understand something.

Your mother and I didn’t separate because we stopped loving each other.

We separated because I found out she had been hiding something from me.

Something about your birth.

Something about the years before you came into this world.””

My hands trembled.

I looked at Professor Hart.

“Did you know about this?””

She nodded slowly.

“Only part of it.””

“What does that mean?””

She sat down.

“Daniel never told me everything.””

I continued reading.

“My entire life, I believed Denise and I were building a family together. But after Paige was born, I started noticing things that didn’t make sense.

Documents disappearing.

Conversations ending when I entered the room.

Secrets that had no explanation.

Then I found a medical record.””

I stopped.

Medical record.

My stomach tightened.

I kept reading.

“A record that proved Denise had known information about Paige’s birth that she hid from me.””

I looked up.

“What information?””

Professor Hart was quiet.

“I don’t know.””

I turned the page.

The next part was missing.

I flipped through the envelope.

Nothing.

My heart sank.

“Where is the rest?””

Professor Hart looked uncomfortable.

“That’s why I asked you to come here.””

“What?””

She reached into the box.

And pulled out another envelope.

“This was found years later.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””

“Because Daniel asked me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying they were protecting me.

But protection had become another word for hiding the truth.

I opened the second envelope.

Inside was a hospital document.

My birth certificate.

I looked at it.

Everything seemed normal.

Until I saw the name listed under biological information.

I stopped breathing.

There was another name.

A name I had never seen.

A woman.

Not Denise.

I looked at Professor Hart.

“What is this?””

She looked away.

“Paige…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me.””

She whispered:

“Denise may not be your biological mother.””

The room spun.

I grabbed the desk.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I pushed the document away.

“That’s impossible.””

Professor Hart’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Your father spent years trying to confirm the truth.””

“Who is she?””

She didn’t answer.

“Who is my biological mother?””

Before Professor Hart could speak, the office door opened.

Daniel stood there.

His expression told me he already knew.

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

His face fell.

“Yes.””

My voice broke.

“You knew and you still let me believe everything was normal?””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“For twenty years?””

“I was fighting a system designed to keep me away from you.””

I looked between them.

“Who is she?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Her name is Rachel.””

The name meant nothing.

But somehow, hearing it made my entire life feel unfamiliar.

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She disappeared after you were born.””

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said:

“Because Denise made sure she had to.””

The next day, I confronted Denise.

She opened the door and immediately knew why I was there.

“You found out.””

I stared at her.

“Who is Rachel?””

Her face changed.

Just for a second.

Fear.

Real fear.

Then it disappeared.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m your mother.””

The words felt different now.

“I don’t know if you are.””

Her face went pale.

For the first time in my life, Denise looked scared of me.

“What did Daniel tell you?””

“Enough.””

She stepped outside.

“Paige, listen to me.””

“No.””

I backed away.

“You don’t get to explain this.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand that you stole my father from me.””

“That man was dangerous.””

“He loved me.””

“He wasn’t your father.””

The sentence hit me like a slap.

I stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Denise froze.

She knew she had revealed too much.

“You need to leave.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You spent my whole life controlling the story.””

Her eyes hardened.

“Because someone had to.””

“Why?””

“Because if the truth came out, everything would collapse.””

“What truth?””

She didn’t answer.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And her expression changed.

Not fear.

Panic.

She answered.

“What do you mean she contacted her?””

My heart stopped.

She looked at me.

She knew.

I knew.

Someone was still watching.

Someone had been waiting.

When she hung up, I asked:

“Who was that?””

She didn’t respond.

“Mom.””

Her voice dropped.

“Your biological mother.””

The world went silent.

“She’s alive.””

I couldn’t move.

May you like

Then Denise whispered:

“And she’s coming for you.””
