Chapter 8: The Family Above the Family
The words stayed in the air.
*Your father’s family.*
At first, nobody understood.
Then I saw my father’s face.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on the detective.
“Who authorized the transfer?””
Detective Harper looked at the officer.
“Tell him.””
The officer hesitated.
“A legal representative arrived before the vehicle reached the station.””
“A lawyer?””
“Yes.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Name.””
The officer looked down at his notes.
“Alexander Vale.””
The ballroom went silent.
I felt my stomach drop.
Because that name meant something.
Not from memory.
From the way everyone reacted.
My mother covered her mouth.
Daniel looked at my father.
“Your brother?””
My father nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
A chill moved through me.
I had heard stories.
Not many.
My father rarely spoke about his family.
But I remembered one night years ago when I asked why he never attended family events.
His answer had been simple.
“Some families share blood. That doesn’t mean they share loyalty.””
I had assumed it was an old argument.
A disagreement.
I never imagined something like this.
My father turned toward the entrance.
“Get everyone out.””
Detective Harper frowned.
“Mr. Vale?””
“This is no longer just about Eleanor Whitmore.””
His voice lowered.
“This involves people who have been planning for years.””
The guests began moving.
Some hurried toward the exits.
Others lingered, desperate for more details.
The wedding had become a battlefield, and everyone wanted to witness the final strike.
But I didn’t care about them.
I only cared about one thing.
“Where is Eleanor?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“We don’t know.””
My heart sank.
“She disappeared?””
Detective Harper nodded.
“The person who intercepted her had legal paperwork claiming temporary transfer authority.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Fake authority.””
“Most likely.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“My uncle.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“I met Alexander Vale once.””
My father looked at him.
“You did?””
Daniel nodded.
“Before Emma and I got married.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“He approached me.””
The room became quiet again.
“When?””
“About a month before the wedding.””
I stared at him.
“And you never told me?””
His eyes closed.
“I know.””
I almost walked away.
Almost.
But something stopped me.
“What did he say?””
Daniel swallowed.
“He said he knew about the agreement.””
My father’s face changed.
“What else?””
Daniel looked at him.
“He said if I wanted to protect my future, I needed to follow instructions.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What instructions?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“He told me the marriage had to happen.””
Nobody spoke.
“He told me Emma had to become pregnant.””
My breathing stopped.
My father stepped forward.
“Why?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn’t know.””
“Daniel.””
“I swear.””
His voice cracked.
“He never explained everything.””
I believed him.
But believing him no longer made the pain disappear.
Because once again, I was hearing about decisions made around me.
About me.
Without me.
My mother touched my arm.
“Emma.””
I pulled away gently.
“I need everyone to stop protecting me.””
Nobody spoke.
“I mean it.””
I looked at all of them.
“My whole life, people have made choices because they thought they knew what was best.””
My eyes moved to my father.
“To you.””
Then my mother.
“To you.””
Then Daniel.
“And you.””
Each word hurt.
“But nobody asked what I wanted.””
The room became still.
My father looked devastated.
“You’re right.””
The answer surprised me.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t explain.
He simply accepted it.
“I was so focused on fighting the people who wanted to hurt you that I forgot something important.””
“What?””
“You deserved the truth.””
My eyes burned.
Finally.
After all the secrets.
Someone finally said it.
Detective Harper interrupted.
“I’m sorry, but we need to move quickly.””
Everyone turned.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because if Alexander Vale is involved, this is not just about evidence.””
“What is it about?””
“Control.””
The word made my stomach tighten.
She continued.
“Your child’s existence changes several legal and financial agreements.””
My father nodded.
“The inheritance.””
“Yes.””
Daniel frowned.
“But if the baby is born, why would anyone need to stop it?””
Detective Harper looked at him.
“Because there are people who benefit if the child is not recognized.””
The room went silent.
My hand moved over my stomach.
“Are you saying someone wants to hurt my baby?””
Nobody answered quickly.
And that was answer enough.
My father immediately stepped closer.
“No one will get near her.””
Detective Harper looked at him.
“Mr. Vale, you need to understand something.””
She lowered her voice.
“The people involved have resources.””
My father’s expression became cold.
“So do I.””
For a second, I saw the man everyone feared.
Not the father who hugged me.
Not the man who apologized.
The businessman.
The fighter.
The person who built an empire.
But then he looked at me.
And it disappeared.
Because I wasn’t a business problem.
I was his daughter.
My mother suddenly looked toward the entrance.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
She looked frightened.
“Alexander wouldn’t do this alone.””
My father’s face changed.
“What are you saying?””
My mother swallowed.
“I’m saying Eleanor wasn’t the beginning.””
A silence.
“She was recruited.””
My stomach tightened.
“By who?””
My mother looked at Daniel.
Then me.
“I don’t know.””
Detective Harper frowned.
“But you have a suspicion.””
My mother hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked at my father.
And whispered:
“Your grandfather.””
The room went completely silent.
My father froze.
“My grandfather died fifteen years ago.””
My mother shook her head.
“Not physically.””
Everyone stared.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“It means his influence never died.””
A terrible realization crossed my father’s face.
“No.””
“Yes.””
My mother’s voice was quiet.
“The Vale family has always had people behind the scenes.””
I looked at my father.
“Your family did this?””
He looked like he was remembering something painful.
“My father believed power was more important than people.””
He stopped.
“My brother inherited that belief.””
Daniel looked at him.
“So Alexander is trying to control the inheritance.””
“Yes.””
“And Emma’s baby?””
My father’s expression hardened.
“The baby represents a future he cannot control.””
I felt dizzy.
Everything was becoming bigger.
First the Whitmores.
Then the marriage agreement.
Now my own family.
The people who were supposed to protect me.
I wrapped my arms around myself.
“I need to leave.””
Everyone turned.
My father immediately moved.
“I’ll take you home.””
“No.””
The word surprised him.
“I don’t mean the house.””
I looked around.
“At this moment, I don’t know which place is safe.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew.
Detective Harper stepped forward.
“We need to move you somewhere secure.””
I nodded.
Then I looked at Daniel.
He stood apart from everyone.
Broken.
Lost.
But still there.
“I need to ask you something.””
His eyes lifted.
“What?””
“When you met Alexander…”
He waited.
“Did he ever mention my father?””
Daniel frowned.
“No.””
“Did he mention my mother?””
“No.””
I looked down.
“Did he mention me?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“He mentioned your name.””
My heart stopped.
“What did he say?””
Daniel looked at me.
“He said…”
He paused.
“‘Emma Vale has no idea how valuable she really is.’”
A cold silence followed.
My baby moved.
A small movement.
A reminder.
My child was real.
Not an inheritance.
Not a contract.
Not a weapon.
Real.
Then Detective Harper’s phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Her face changed.
Again.
“What happened?””
She looked at me.
“Mrs. Vale.””
I already knew I wasn’t going to like the answer.
“What?””
The detective lowered the phone.
“We found Eleanor.””
My father exhaled.
“Where?””
The detective looked toward the ballroom doors.
“She came back.””
Everyone froze.
“She came back?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The detective’s expression turned grim.
“Because she brought someone with her.””
The doors opened.
And Eleanor Whitmore walked into the ballroom.
No police.
No fear.
No hesitation.
Beside her stood a man I had never seen before.
Older.
Elegant.
Cold.
My father went completely still.
Because he knew him.
The man looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
And smiled.
“Emma.””
My father whispered his name.
“Alexander.””
The man smiled wider.
May you like
And said the words that made my entire body go cold.
“I’m here to take back what belongs to the Vale family.””
