Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Marriage
I stared at the papers until the words blurred.
My father's study was warm, but a chill had settled beneath my skin.
“What do you mean, he used my name?””
Richard sat opposite me.
“Three months ago, Mark approached one of the companies in our investment portfolio. He wanted financing for a commercial redevelopment project outside Atlanta.””
I knew about the project.
Mark had spoken about it constantly. He described it as the opportunity that would take his company to the next level.
He had also told me the financing was almost finalized.
“He said the bank approved it,” I whispered.
“Part of it, perhaps. But the agreement he wanted from our side was separate.””
Richard slid a document toward me.
My full legal name appeared near the bottom.
Rachel Anne Hale Bennett.
The signature beneath it looked like mine.
Almost.
I picked up the paper.
“That's not my signature.””
“I didn't think it was.””
My throat tightened.
“What is this document?””
“A personal guarantee attached to a proposed investment agreement. It represents you as a consenting guarantor.””
“I never agreed to guarantee anything.””
“Then we need to establish who signed it.””
I read the page again.
The language was dense, filled with legal phrases I recognized from the years I had spent helping Mark's company. It appeared to tie personal assets to obligations connected with his project.
I looked up sharply.
“Did Mark tell your company that I was involved?””
“He represented that you were aware of the transaction.””
“But I wasn't.””
“I know.””
I wanted to believe my father, but anger was beginning to drown out everything else.
“Why didn't you tell me when you first learned about this?””
“Because our legal team was verifying the documents. I didn't want to accuse your husband without evidence.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Evidence. Of course.””
“Rachel—”
“No. Do you know what I was doing three months ago? I was helping Lily with her reading log while Mark sat at the kitchen counter telling me he was working late.
He said the project was almost finished. He said everything was under control.””
My father didn't interrupt.
“And now you're telling me he may have put my name on a financial guarantee I never signed?””
“Yes.””
I pushed the papers away.
“Why would he do that?””
Richard's expression hardened.
“That is what I intend to find out.””
I stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, headlights moved along the distant road.
I remembered the late-night phone calls Mark had taken on the balcony. The sudden password changes on his laptop. The way he had started insisting that I sign routine business documents without reading every page because, according to him, we were running out of time.
Had those moments meant nothing?
Or had I been watching the truth unfold and refusing to recognize it?
My father came to stand beside me.
“There's something else.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of course there is.””
“The firm involved in the proposed financing is scheduled to make a decision tomorrow morning. Until we resolve the questions surrounding your signature, the transaction is on hold.””
I turned toward him.
“Can you stop the deal?””
“Yes.””
“Will you?””
“Immediately.””
The certainty in his voice startled me.
“You'd risk a major investment because of me?””
“I would protect my daughter from a transaction she never authorized.””
He paused.
“And I would protect my granddaughter from any adult who believes family ties give them permission to hurt her.””
For the first time that night, I felt something other than fear.
Relief.
Not because my father could fix everything.
But because someone had finally heard me without asking me to make the situation easier for the people who caused it.
A soft knock interrupted us.
Margaret entered carrying a tray with tea and a plate of toast.
“Lily is sleeping,” she said.
“The pediatrician we called is on his way to check her cheek.””
“Thank you,” I whispered.
Margaret set down the tray.
“She's a brave little girl.””
I looked away before I could cry again.
My father returned to his desk and picked up his phone.
“Daniel, please come to the study.””
Within minutes, Daniel entered with a tablet and a slim black folder.
Richard gestured toward the chair.
“Tell us what you found.””
Daniel placed the tablet on the desk.
“Mr. Hale's office received the initial documents from the investment firm at two forty this afternoon. Our counsel flagged the signature discrepancy at three fifteen.””
“And the message about Rachel?”” Richard asked.
“Came from a staff member who attended a meeting with Mr. Bennett last week. She believed Mrs. Bennett was being represented as a guarantor without having attended the meeting.””
My stomach twisted.
“Someone at the company knew?””
“Yes, ma'am. She wasn't certain what was happening, but she thought you should be contacted.””
“Why didn't she call me?””
“She was concerned about losing her job. She contacted our legal department instead.””
My father nodded.
“Continue.””
Daniel tapped the screen.
“The investment firm requested a meeting with Mr. Bennett tomorrow morning. They intend to ask him to explain the documentation. In the meantime, they have suspended further processing.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Does Mark know you've discovered the signature?””
“We don't know,” Daniel answered.
“But given the timing, it's possible he suspects the transaction has stalled.””
I thought about his face in the driveway.
The moment he heard that my father was waiting for me, the anger had disappeared.
What had he been afraid of?
Not the slap.
Not losing his wife.
Something else.
My phone vibrated in my handbag.
Mark.
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
Rachel, please answer. We need to talk before you do something you'll regret.
A second message followed.
Your father has no idea what he's getting involved in.
I read it twice.
Then I handed the phone to my father.
He studied the screen without speaking.
Finally, he returned it.
“Do you want to answer him?””
“No.””
“Then don't.””
I silenced the phone.
For a few seconds, the room was quiet.
Then another message appeared.
This time, it was from Megan.
You need to come back and apologize to Mom. You've humiliated this family.
I stared at the words.
My daughter had been slapped.
My husband had blamed me for objecting.
And somehow, his sister still believed I owed them an apology.
I put the phone face down.
“I'm not going back tonight.””
My father nodded.
“Good.””
I looked at him.
“But I want the truth. All of it. If Mark has done something illegal, I need to know. If I've unknowingly put anything at risk, I need to understand it.””
“You will.””
“And I don't want you using your influence to destroy him just because you're angry.””
Richard's expression softened.
“I have no intention of making decisions out of anger.””
He closed the folder.
“But I won't allow anyone to use your name without your consent.””
I nodded.
It was the first clear decision I had made all evening.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened for several seconds, and looked toward my father.
“Sir, there's been a development.””
Richard's face became still.
“What kind of development?””
Daniel covered the microphone.
“Mr. Bennett has arrived at the front gate. He's demanding to see Rachel.””
My heart began pounding.
May you like
Then Daniel added the words that made my father rise from his chair.
“He isn't alone. Mrs. Evelyn Bennett is with him, and they've brought a lawyer.””
