Chapter 3: The Letter From a Ten-Year-Old Girl

Daniel chose a diner on the outskirts of Columbus, twenty minutes from my house.

I arrived early.

The place smelled of burnt coffee and bacon grease. A football game played silently on a television above the counter, and an elderly couple shared a plate of pancakes near the window.

I chose a booth where I could see the entrance.

At 11:07, Daniel walked in carrying a thick manila envelope.

He looked exhausted.

His coat was unbuttoned, his hair was damp from the snow, and dark circles shadowed his eyes.

He recognized me immediately.

"Julian?""

I stood.

"Daniel.""

We shook hands awkwardly.

He sat across from me and placed the envelope between us.

"Before we start, how's Isaiah?""

The question caught me off guard.

"He's with my sister. He's shaken up, but he's safe.""

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

"Good.""

"You sound like you know him.""

"I've seen pictures.""

"From Vanessa?""

"No. From Chloe.""

He opened the envelope and pulled out several pages.

The top sheet was written in a child's uneven handwriting.

At the top, someone had written a date.

Three years earlier.

I began reading.

My name is Chloe Reeves. I am seven years old. I want to tell the truth because Mommy keeps saying I have to say something different.

My chest tightened.

I continued.

Isaiah didn't push me. Isaiah didn't hit me. Isaiah didn't make me fall.

I stopped reading.

Daniel stared at the table.

"What happened?""

"Chloe fell down the basement stairs at Vanessa's old house.""

I looked up.

"How?""

"She was playing near the stairs. Vanessa had told her not to go down there, but Chloe wanted her stuffed rabbit. She slipped.""

"And Isaiah?""

"He wasn't even in the house.""

I looked back at the paper.

The next lines were shakier.

Mommy says if I tell people I fell, they will take me away from her. She says Daddy will make sure I never come home again.

I felt nauseated.

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Chloe was seven. She was terrified. Vanessa kept telling her that if she loved her mother, she would say Isaiah had pushed her.""

"Why would she do that?""

"Because Vanessa had been fighting with me for months about custody. She wanted to prove I wasn't providing a safe environment for Chloe.""

"But Isaiah wasn't there.""

"Exactly.""

I stared at the statement.

"Did you take this to the police?""

"I tried.""

"And?""

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

"Vanessa told them I was manipulating our daughter. She said I had coached Chloe into making the statement. Her lawyer argued that the paper was unreliable because Chloe was a child.""

"Was there an investigation?""

"Yes. The school counselor reported Chloe's conflicting accounts. Social services interviewed her. They found no evidence that Isaiah had hurt her, but they also couldn't determine why Vanessa had pressured her to change her story.""

"Did you get custody?""

"Eventually, I got primary custody. Vanessa still has visitation rights, but Chloe refuses to stay overnight with her.""

He pushed another document toward me.

It was a photocopy of an email.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was Daniel.

The date was two years earlier.

If you continue poisoning Chloe against me, I will make sure everyone knows what your household allowed to happen. You think your precious custody order protects you? Wait until people learn what Isaiah is capable of.

I read it twice.

"She was threatening you.""

"She was threatening both of us.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Daniel's eyes lifted to mine.

"I tried to find a way to contact you last year. Vanessa discovered it and called me. She said you had already decided to believe Isaiah was a problem child.""

My jaw tightened.

"I never said that.""

"I believe you.""

He removed a third document from the envelope.

"This is what concerns me most.""

It was a printed text exchange.

Vanessa had sent messages to an unknown number.

He's getting older. Julian is starting to notice.

Another message followed.

If Isaiah keeps getting in the way, I'll have to do something.

The response read:

You promised you'd fix this before the wedding.

I looked up sharply.

"What wedding?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know. The messages were included in a report I received during the custody dispute. The number belonged to someone who never identified themselves.""

"Did you report it?""

"My lawyer did. The investigator couldn't establish who owned the number, and Vanessa claimed the messages had been taken out of context.""

I felt anger rising, but beneath it was something worse.

Fear.

"Daniel, what does she mean by getting in the way?""

"I don't know.""

"Could she have been referring to Isaiah?""

"That's what I thought.""

I leaned back and pressed my fingers against my forehead.

For three years, I had defended Vanessa whenever Rachel questioned her behavior.

I had explained away her irritation, her coldness, and the way she seemed to resent every minute I spent with my son.

I had believed that marriage meant giving someone the benefit of the doubt.

Now I wondered whether I had confused loyalty with blindness.

Daniel folded his hands.

"Julian, I need to tell you something else.""

I looked at him.

"Chloe told her therapist that Vanessa said she would eventually have a new family. She said she wanted a child who would belong to both of us.""

"Both of you?""

"Vanessa and you.""

The words landed like stones.

"She wanted another child?""

"She wanted a child who would make your family feel complete, according to Chloe. She said Isaiah was a reminder that you had a life before her.""

I stared at the envelope.

Vanessa had once told me she didn't want children because pregnancy would interfere with her career.

When I asked whether she wanted to revisit that decision, she had become furious.

She had said Isaiah was enough responsibility for one household.

I had accepted that answer.

Now I wondered what she had really meant.

"Did she ever try to hurt Isaiah?"" I asked.

Daniel looked away.

"I can't prove she did.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He swallowed.

"There was an incident last winter. Isaiah was visiting us with you, remember? You took a call outside, and Vanessa went upstairs with Chloe. When you came back, Isaiah was crying in the kitchen.""

I remembered.

Isaiah had said he wanted to go home.

Vanessa had told me he was overtired.

Daniel continued.

"Chloe later told me that Vanessa had taken Isaiah's favorite dinosaur and thrown it into the trash because he wouldn't let Chloe borrow it. When he cried, she told him he was being dramatic.""

My hands clenched.

"I thought he had lost it.""

"He didn't.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Julian, I don't know what Vanessa is planning. But I know she's been angry for a long time. And I know she has repeatedly tried to make people believe your son is dangerous.""

I looked toward the window.

Snow drifted across the parking lot.

"What should I do?""

"Protect Isaiah. Document everything. Don't confront Vanessa alone if you think she might retaliate. And speak to a family lawyer before making decisions about the house.""

I nodded slowly.

Then Daniel reached into his envelope and pulled out one final item.

A photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing beside a man I didn't recognize outside a hotel.

She was holding his arm.

The picture was dated six months earlier.

"Who is that?"" I asked.

Daniel shook his head.

"I was hoping you could tell me.""

I studied the man's face.

Dark hair. Expensive suit. A distinctive silver watch.

Something about him looked familiar, but I couldn't place it.

Then I turned the photograph over.

A name was written on the back.

*Marcus Bell.*

Beneath it was a date.

May you like

And a sentence that made my blood run cold.

The night we agreed on the plan.
