Chapter 9: The Name Maya Buried

The voice disappeared.

But the question remained.

*Ask Maya why she changed her name.*

I stood frozen in Ethan’s empty bedroom, phone still pressed against my ear.

“Hello?””

Nothing.

The call had ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Vivian was watching me.

“What did they say?””

I looked at her.

For once, I didn’t know whether she was telling the truth.

And that realization hurt more than any betrayal.

“Who was it?””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

“Really?””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Her face hardened.

“David, our son is missing.””

The words cut through everything.

She was right.

Whatever secrets existed, whatever lies had been uncovered, Ethan came first.

I turned away.

“Call the police.””

Vivian hesitated.

That hesitation lasted less than a second.

But I saw it.

“You don’t want to?””

“I didn’t say that.””

“Then do it.””

She grabbed her phone.

I walked back into the hallway.

My mind was moving too fast.

Maya changed her name.

Vivian knew her before.

My father was involved.

A hidden file.

A missing painting.

Ethan gone.

Everything felt connected.

But I couldn’t see the whole picture.

Not yet.

Then I remembered.

Maya.

I pulled out my phone.

Called.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

On the third attempt, someone picked up.

But it wasn’t Maya.

“Hello?””

My heart stopped.

“Ethan?””

A small breath.

Then silence.

“Ethan, buddy, are you there?””

A whisper.

“Daddy?””

I closed my eyes.

Relief hit me so hard my knees almost gave out.

“Where are you?””

“I don’t know.””

“Are you hurt?””

“No.””

“Is someone with you?””

Silence.

Then:

“Maya.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She came.””

My heart raced.

“Where are you, Ethan?””

“I don’t know.””

“Look around.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

“Because Mommy said not to open my eyes.””

My blood ran cold.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

I forced my voice to stay calm.

“You can open your eyes.””

“No.””

“Buddy, it’s okay.””

“No, Daddy.””

His voice trembled.

“Mommy said if I opened them, I would see something I shouldn’t.””

I closed my eyes.

Then I heard another voice.

Maya.

“David.””

I stood.

“Maya?””

“She’s not here.””

“What do you mean?””

“I found him.””

I felt a rush of confusion.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“I can’t tell you yet.””

My anger rose.

“You have my son.””

“I saved your son.””

“Then tell me where you are.””

“David, please listen.””

Her voice broke.

“You need to understand what’s happening before you come here.””

I looked at Vivian.

She was standing in the hallway, watching me.

“You’re asking me to trust you after everything?””

“I know.””

“Then tell me why you changed your name.””

Silence.

A long one.

The kind that answers before words do.

Finally:

“Who told you?””

“Just answer.””

Maya breathed out slowly.

“Because Maya Carter isn’t my real name.””

I felt the room spin.

“Who are you?””

“My real name is Elena Voss.””

The name meant nothing.

Until it did.

Because I had seen it before.

On an old document.

In my father’s files.

I remembered the folder.

The hidden papers.

The name on a report.

*Elena Voss.*

I sat down.

“You were involved.””

“I was a child.””

The answer came quickly.

“What?””

“I was twelve years old when my father died.””

My chest tightened.

“Your father?””

“Marcus Voss.””

The name hit me.

Vivian’s father’s former business partner.

The man connected to everything.

“My father destroyed yours,” she said quietly.

“No.””

“David, listen.””

I could hear tears in her voice.

“Your father didn’t expose my father.””

I said nothing.

“He exposed both of them.””

The truth felt like a door opening.

A door I wasn’t ready to walk through.

“Then why did you come into my home?””

“Because your father left something.””

“The evidence.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know who to trust.””

The words hurt.

“Not even me?””

“Especially not you.””

I felt that.

Deeply.

“Why?””

“Because you were Vivian’s husband.””

I looked at Vivian.

She looked away.

“You thought I was like her?””

“I didn’t know.””

Maya’s voice softened.

“But then I met your children.””

A pause.

“And I realized you didn’t know either.””

“What?””

“You didn’t know what she was capable of.””

I looked at Ethan.

My son.

The boy who had been afraid.

“I found the painting.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“The one your father hid.””

“Where?””

“Under the floor.””

I stood.

“Where?””

“In the old guest house.””

The guest house.

A place we rarely used.

A place Vivian hated because she said it reminded her of the past.

“What’s inside?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Maya was quiet.

Then:

“That Vivian’s father didn’t act alone.””

My grip tightened.

“And Vivian?””

Another silence.

Then:

“She was there.””

I looked at my wife.

“Where is Ethan?””

“He’s with me.””

“Bring him home.””

“I will.””

“But first, you need to know something.””

“What?””

“Your wife knows I have the evidence.””

My blood turned cold.

“How?””

“Because she followed me.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

I looked around.

The house.

The empty bedroom.

The missing child.

“She didn’t send someone else.””

Maya’s voice lowered.

“She came herself.””

My heart stopped.

“Vivian isn’t here?””

No answer.

I looked toward the hallway.

The place where she had been standing.

Empty.

I walked quickly downstairs.

“Vivian?””

Nothing.

The front door was open.

Cold air moved through the foyer.

On the floor was her phone.

And beside it…

A small piece of paper.

I picked it up.

My hands started shaking.

One sentence.

Written in Vivian’s handwriting.

*If you want your son back, come to the place where your father lied.*

I looked at the address underneath.

The old guest house.

The same place Maya said she had hidden the evidence.

My phone rang.

This time, I answered immediately.

A woman’s voice.

Not Vivian.

Not Maya.

Someone else.

“David Hale.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who knows why your father really died.””

My throat went dry.

“What do you want?””

The woman whispered:

“To stop you from making the same mistake he made.””

“What mistake?””

Silence.

May you like

Then:

“Trusting Vivian.””
