Chapter 8: The Brother Who Came Back

I spent the next hour trying to convince myself I had misunderstood Daniel.

There had to be an explanation.

A mistake.

A wrong name.

A misunderstanding.

Because the alternative was impossible.

My husband’s brother, Raymond, had been declared dead after a boating accident twelve years ago.

I attended the funeral.

I saw the photographs.

I watched my husband grieve.

How could he be alive?

When Daniel arrived, he brought copies of every document.

He placed them on my kitchen table.

“The signature matches.””

I stared.

“Whose?””

“Raymond’s.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Margaret—”

“No.””

Because accepting it meant accepting something much bigger.

Someone had been hiding for years.

Someone connected to my family.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Your husband may have known.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“There are notes in the files.””

“What notes?””

He handed me a page.

My husband’s handwriting.

I recognized it instantly.

My hands trembled.

The note was short.

*If Raymond returns, protect Margaret. Do not let him near the account.*

I couldn’t breathe.

My husband knew.

He knew his brother was alive.

And he was afraid.

That evening, Lennox and I searched through the house.

We needed the letter.

The truth.

Anything.

Then we found it.

Hidden inside an old wooden box in my husband’s closet.

A letter.

With my name on it.

I opened it carefully.

My husband’s words stared back at me.

Margaret,

If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.

I covered my mouth.

I never told you everything because I wanted to protect you.

Raymond made dangerous choices. He became obsessed with money and control.

If he ever comes back, do not trust him.

My hands shook.

Then I read the final lines.

The person you should fear most is not Raymond.

I stopped.

There was another page.

Missing.

Someone had torn it out.

Lennox noticed.

“Mom.””

I looked at him.

“Someone removed part of the letter.””

Then we heard the front door open.

Slowly.

Someone had entered.

I grabbed the letter.

“Who is there?””

A voice answered.

A voice I had never heard before.

“Margaret?””

I froze.

Because Lennox recognized it.

His face went white.

“Dad’s brother.””

The man stepped into the hallway.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

Raymond.

He smiled.

“I’ve waited a long time to meet you.””

I couldn’t move.

“You’re dead.””

He laughed softly.

“People believe whatever they’re told.””

Lennox stepped in front of me.

“You need to leave.””

Raymond looked at him.

“You’re protecting her now?””

“Yes.””

Raymond smiled.

“Interesting.””

He looked around the house.

“This place looks exactly like your father described.””

My blood ran cold.

“You knew my husband?””

“Better than anyone.””

“No.””

Raymond walked closer.

“Your husband betrayed me.””

“What?””

“He took everything from me.””

Lennox shook his head.

“You’re lying.””

Raymond looked at him.

“You really don’t know, do you?””

I felt something was coming.

Something worse.

Raymond smiled.

“Your father didn’t leave you money.””

He looked at me.

“He left you ownership.””

“Of what?””

His smile widened.

“The company.””

I stared.

“What company?””

Raymond leaned forward.

“The company your husband built before you ever met him.””

May you like

And then he said something that changed everything.

“Your husband wasn’t poor when he died.””
