Chapter 2: The Envelope Nobody Was Supposed to See
The man introduced himself as Richard Hayes, the Whitmore family's attorney.
He was in his early fifties, with neatly combed gray hair and the kind of expression that made it difficult to know what he was thinking.
He approached Evelyn.
"Are you injured?""
"My knees are scraped," she answered.
"But I'm alive.""
Richard glanced at Marcus.
"Can we speak privately?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No. Whatever this is, you're going to say it here.""
Richard looked uncomfortable.
Vanessa took advantage of the silence.
"Thank goodness you're here, Richard. This entire situation has become ridiculous.""
Evelyn turned toward her.
"Don't speak as though we're friends.""
Vanessa's lips tightened.
Richard placed his briefcase on a nearby table.
"Mrs. Whitmore, I strongly advise against discussing the documents in front of the guests.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"What documents?""
Richard opened the briefcase.
Inside were several folders, a sealed envelope, and a thick legal document bearing Evelyn's signature.
Marcus stared at it.
"What's that?""
"My revised estate agreement," Evelyn said.
His expression changed.
"You changed your will?""
"Last night.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I wanted everything finalized before I told anyone.""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Marcus, this is all a misunderstanding. Evelyn has been under enormous pressure lately.""
Evelyn looked at her.
"You're making another mistake.""
Richard removed his glasses.
"The revised agreement changes the ownership structure of Whitmore Holdings. It also establishes an independent foundation to manage several family assets.""
Marcus frowned.
"Why?""
Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.
"Because I discovered that someone has been stealing from the company.""
The guests began whispering.
Vanessa's face turned pale.
Marcus looked confused.
"Stealing? From us?""
"Millions of dollars," Evelyn replied.
Richard opened another folder.
"We have identified unauthorized transfers through several investment subsidiaries.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"This is ridiculous.""
Evelyn continued.
"The money was transferred through a company registered under a false name. That company has connections to people close to me.""
Marcus stared at his mother.
"Who?""
Evelyn didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Vanessa.
"She knows.""
Vanessa placed her champagne glass on the table.
"You're making accusations without evidence.""
"Then explain the payments.""
Richard interrupted.
"Mrs. Caldwell, we have bank records.""
Vanessa's voice became sharp.
"You have no right to discuss my financial affairs.""
"I have every right to discuss the movement of Whitmore Holdings' money.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"Can someone explain why this is happening at my wedding?""
Nobody answered.
I stood a few feet away, feeling increasingly uncomfortable.
I wanted to disappear.
I had saved Evelyn. I had given them the video.
Surely that was enough.
I quietly picked up my damaged phone.
A security guard noticed.
"Ma'am, please stay here.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
"Mr. Whitmore requested that everyone involved remain available.""
I almost laughed.
Everyone involved?
I was a housekeeper.
My supervisor would probably be looking for me.
I glanced toward the elevator.
Then Marcus approached.
"What's your name?""
"Nia Carter.""
"How long have you worked here?""
"Almost three years.""
He looked at my torn uniform and bleeding knees.
"Have you received medical attention?""
"I'm fine.""
"You're bleeding.""
"It's not serious.""
He turned toward a security guard.
"Get the hotel medic.""
I shook my head.
"Please. I just want to finish my shift.""
Marcus looked genuinely surprised.
"Your shift?""
I nodded.
"My sister is counting on my paycheck.""
Something changed in his expression.
Before he could answer, Vanessa spoke loudly.
"This is exactly why we need to be careful. People will do anything for money.""
I turned.
She was looking directly at me.
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Don't.""
Vanessa ignored him.
"Perhaps the girl saw an opportunity. Imagine the attention she'll receive after claiming she saved my friend's life.""
I stared at her.
"You watched me pull your friend off a building.""
She rolled her eyes.
"And now you're trying to become part of this family?""
The insult landed harder than I expected.
I felt heat rise in my face.
"I don't want anything from your family.""
"Then why are you still standing here?""
"Because you tried to kill someone.""
Vanessa stepped toward me.
"You have no idea who you're talking to.""
Evelyn suddenly spoke.
"Vanessa, sit down.""
The command was quiet.
But Vanessa obeyed.
For a moment, I understood why everyone in the hotel feared Evelyn Whitmore.
She didn't need to shout.
She simply looked at people as though she could see exactly what they were hiding.
Richard removed the brown envelope from his briefcase.
"This was recovered from the service corridor.""
My stomach tightened.
It was the same envelope Daniel had handed Vanessa.
"Is that the one from my recording?"" I asked.
Richard nodded.
"We believe so.""
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a small USB drive and a handwritten note.
He read the note aloud.
"Make sure the old woman never signs the transfer.""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Marcus looked at her.
"Mom, what transfer?""
She hesitated.
Then she answered.
"Whitmore Holdings was supposed to be transferred into a trust this morning. The trust would have prevented anyone from selling or borrowing against certain properties without independent approval.""
Marcus stared at the note.
"And someone wanted you to stop it?""
"Yes.""
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"This is insane. I'm leaving.""
Two guards moved toward her.
"Mrs. Caldwell, please remain here.""
She pointed at them.
"Do you know who I am?""
One guard answered calmly.
"Yes, ma'am.""
"Then move.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Nobody is leaving until we know what happened.""
Vanessa looked at him with an expression I couldn't quite understand.
Then she said something that made the room go cold.
"Ask your mother why she changed the trust after discovering what your father did.""
Marcus froze.
"My father?""
Evelyn's face lost its color.
She looked at Richard.
"Not here.""
But Marcus was already shaking his head.
"No. You don't get to do that. What did Dad do?""
Evelyn looked toward her son.
"Your father wasn't the businessman you remember.""
Marcus's voice broke.
"He died twelve years ago.""
"I know.""
"Then what are you talking about?""
Evelyn reached for his hand.
"Your father left behind a debt. A debt I have spent twelve years trying to conceal.""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
And I realized something.
She wasn't frightened anymore.
She was waiting.
Richard's phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
Then his expression changed.
"Mrs. Whitmore, we have a problem.""
"What?""
"Daniel Brooks has just entered the underground parking garage.""
Marcus turned.
"Have security stop him.""
Richard swallowed.
"That's not possible.""
"Why?""
"Because the security system shows that Daniel's employee access card was used to enter the garage.""
He paused.
"He's already inside a vehicle registered to you, Mr. Whitmore.""
Marcus stared at him.
"My vehicle?""
May you like
Richard nodded.
"Your father's old black Mercedes.""
