Chapter 3: The Secret Inside My Medical File
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
“They already know.””
Cole’s words stayed in the air.
Not the hospital.
Not the records.
Not even the person who accessed them.
Those three words.
They already know.
I stared at him.
“Who already knows?””
Cole didn’t answer.
That scared me more than if he had.
Because my husband had spent the entire night trying to explain himself. He had always been quick with excuses, quick with reasons, quick with carefully chosen words.
But now he had nothing.
Only fear.
I stepped closer.
“Cole.””
His eyes moved away from mine.
“Answer me.””
Darla looked between us.
“What did they say?””
I turned toward her.
“You tell me.””
Her face went pale.
“Emma…”
“You were the one who brought a guardianship document into my house.””
I pointed toward the torn pieces scattered across the floor.
“You were the one planning for a future where you made decisions for my daughter.””
My voice shook.
“So tell me why someone accessed my medical records.””
Darla started crying again.
But this time, I didn’t feel sorry.
Not like before.
Because now there was something bigger than betrayal.
There was fear.
Real fear.
The kind that settled deep in my bones.
Cole grabbed his phone.
“I’m going to call them back.””
“No.””
He stopped.
I looked at him.
“You’re not making decisions anymore.””
His face tightened.
“I’m her father.””
“And I’m her mother.””
The words came out stronger than I expected.
“I’m the one carrying her. I’m the one whose body is keeping her alive. And right now, I don’t know if I can trust either of you.””
That hurt him.
Good.
It needed to.
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
For once, he had nothing to say.
I walked to the kitchen counter and grabbed my phone.
My hands were shaking so badly I almost dropped it.
I called the number from my patient portal.
The automated voice answered.
A calm woman asking me to press buttons.
A calm voice for a world that had just fallen apart.
When a nurse finally answered, I forced myself to speak.
“My name is Emma Whitmore. I was told someone accessed my pregnancy records today without authorization.””
There was a pause.
A longer pause than I wanted.
“Mrs. Whitmore, can you verify your date of birth?””
I did.
“Thank you. I’m pulling up your file now.””
I looked at Cole.
He was standing beside Darla.
Not beside me.
I noticed that.
I would remember that forever.
The nurse came back.
“Mrs. Whitmore, I see a security alert on your account.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means there was an attempt to view restricted information.””
“By who?””
Another pause.
“I’m not permitted to give personal details over the phone until we verify additional information.””
My fingers curled around the phone.
“Then verify me.””
After a few questions, the nurse finally continued.
“Someone used an authorized family access request.””
I froze.
“Family access request?””
“Yes.””
“Who submitted it?””
The nurse hesitated.
Then:
“Your husband.””
I looked at Cole.
He saw my expression.
And immediately shook his head.
“No.””
I pulled the phone away.
“You requested access?””
“I didn’t.””
The nurse was still talking.
“Mrs. Whitmore, the request was submitted through your emergency contact permissions.””
My heart dropped.
Emergency contact.
The document.
The guardianship.
The planning.
It all connected.
“Who else has access?””
The nurse answered carefully.
“Your mother was listed as a secondary emergency contact.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Of course she was.
I ended the call.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Then I looked at Cole.
“You put her on my emergency contact.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Emma, listen.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“No.””
My voice rose.
“You don’t get to ask me to listen anymore.””
He looked wounded.
But I didn’t care.
Not this time.
“When did you do it?””
He looked away.
“When?””
“A few weeks ago.””
A cold feeling spread through my body.
“A few weeks?””
“Yes.””
“When I was pregnant?””
“Yes.””
“When everything was supposed to be about keeping me and our baby safe?””
His face tightened.
“I was trying to prepare.””
“For what?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“For what, Cole?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Complications.””
I stared.
“What complications?””
He looked at my stomach.
And that was when I understood.
He had been waiting for something.
Something I didn’t know about.
Something he thought gave him a reason.
“You talked to a doctor.””
It wasn’t a question.
Cole went quiet.
My heart started beating faster.
“You talked to my doctor without me.””
“Emma—”
“You did.””
Darla stepped forward.
“It wasn’t like that.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew?””
She looked down.
That was my answer.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
My mother knew.
My husband knew.
Everyone knew something about my pregnancy except me.
“What did they find?””
Nobody answered.
I felt panic rising.
“WHAT DID THEY FIND?””
Cole finally spoke.
“Your blood pressure has been elevated.””
I blinked.
That was it?
“You’re telling me this is about my blood pressure?””
“It can become serious.””
“Yes.””
I nodded.
“Yes, pregnancy complications can become serious.””
My voice trembled.
“But you don’t secretly create legal documents and access my medical records because you’re worried.””
Cole’s face changed.
Because he knew.
He knew I was right.
A normal husband would sit beside his wife.
A normal husband would ask questions with her.
A normal husband would say, “We’ll get through this together.””
He didn’t.
He built an escape plan.
With my mother.
I looked at Darla.
“Did he tell you I was unstable?””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“Did he tell you I wasn’t taking care of myself?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
I laughed quietly.
“My God.””
“Emma, I was worried about you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were worried about having control.””
Darla’s voice broke.
“I love you.””
I stared at her.
“You love me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you help my husband hide things from me?””
She had no answer.
The front door suddenly opened.
All three of us turned.
Rachel stood there.
She held a small bag in her hand.
“I’m sorry. I know you said everyone should leave, but you weren’t answering my texts.””
I looked at her.
For some reason, seeing her made my emotions almost break.
Because Rachel was the only person in my house who didn’t know.
The only person who wasn’t part of a secret.
She looked at Cole and Darla.
Then at me.
“What happened?””
I couldn’t speak.
So I handed her the torn document pieces from the floor.
She picked one up.
Her eyes moved across the words.
Then her face changed.
“Emma…”
“I know.””
Rachel looked at Cole.
“What is wrong with you?””
Cole stiffened.
“This is a private family matter.””
Rachel laughed in disbelief.
“Private?””
She held up the paper.
“You tried to make her own mother her child’s guardian without telling her.””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
Nobody answered.
Rachel looked at me.
“Do you want me to stay?””
I almost said yes.
But something inside me stopped.
Because I needed to know the truth.
All of it.
“No.””
Her face fell.
“Emma—”
“I need you to do something for me.””
“Anything.””
I looked at Cole.
Then at Darla.
“Find out exactly what they accessed.””
Rachel’s expression changed.
“What?””
“My medical records.””
She understood immediately.
“You think they did more.””
“I know they did.””
Cole stepped forward.
“Emma, don’t make this worse.””
I turned toward him.
“Worse?””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“You haven’t even told me the worst part yet.””
Nobody moved.
Because they knew.
There was more.
There had to be.
Rachel took out her phone.
“I’ll call someone I know at the hospital.””
Cole suddenly looked alarmed.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
I narrowed my eyes.
“Why not?””
He froze.
“You don’t need to involve other people.””
That was the moment I knew.
The moment I knew the medical records were only the beginning.
Because innocent people don’t panic when someone asks for the truth.
I walked toward the door and opened it.
“Get out.””
Cole stared at me.
“Emma.””
“Get out of my house.””
Darla started crying.
“Where are we supposed to go?””
I looked at my mother.
The woman who had once held my hand through every difficult moment of my life.
And I said the words that broke both of us.
“I don’t know.””
A few minutes later, they were gone.
Rachel stayed.
She helped me sit on the couch.
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But then I saw the attachment.
A screenshot.
A hospital record.
May you like
And beneath it was a message that made my entire body go cold.
*You need to know what your husband and mother were really trying to hide.*
