Chapter 2: The Empty Envelope
The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was a white ceiling.
Not the soft yellow lights of our bedroom.
Not the painted stars above the nursery where Ethan had spent weeks preparing for our baby.
A hospital ceiling.
The second thing I felt was fear.
My hand immediately moved to my stomach.
“Your baby is okay.””
The voice came from my left.
I turned my head and saw Ethan sitting beside my bed, still wearing the same shirt from the party. His hair was messy. His eyes were red.
He looked like he hadn’t blinked in hours.
“The baby?”” I whispered.
He reached for my hand.
“The doctors checked everything. There were some complications from the fall, but the baby’s heartbeat is strong.””
A breath I didn’t know I was holding finally escaped.
I closed my eyes.
For a few seconds, I allowed myself to believe the nightmare was over.
Then I remembered Vanessa.
The push.
The envelope.
The missing money.
My eyes opened again.
“Where’s my purse?””
Ethan hesitated.
That tiny pause told me everything.
“What happened?””
“Claire…”
“Where is my purse?””
He looked down.
“I gave it to the police.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because after what happened, they wanted to collect evidence.””
“Did anyone open it?””
His silence lasted too long.
I pushed myself higher against the pillows.
“Ethan.””
He looked at me.
“Tell me.””
“The officer said something was strange.””
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
“What?””
“He said your purse was found exactly where it fell.””
I stared at him.
“But?””
“But the yellow envelope was inside.””
I felt a cold wave move through my body.
“Inside?””
“Yes.””
I swallowed.
“Then what’s wrong?””
Ethan looked away.
“It was empty.””
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“No.””
“Claire—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“The documents were there.””
“I know.””
“The copies of the bank records. The signatures. Everything.””
Ethan leaned closer.
“Tell me exactly what you found.””
I looked at him.
For the first time since the ambulance arrived, I saw something I hadn’t expected.
Not anger.
Not suspicion.
Fear.
Real fear.
And somehow that scared me more.
“I found proof that someone transferred money from your family trust.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“Millions.””
Ethan sat back.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if someone was stealing.””
“Claire, my father’s trust is audited every year.””
“Then someone found a way around it.””
He stood and began pacing beside the bed.
“My family’s finances have always been complicated.””
“Complicated doesn’t explain forged signatures.””
He stopped.
“Whose signatures?””
I looked at him.
“Mine.””
Silence.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Like the room itself was waiting for his reaction.
“What do you mean yours?””
“I mean someone used my name to approve transfers.””
Ethan slowly sat back down.
“Are you sure?””
The question hurt more than I expected.
I knew he wasn’t accusing me.
I knew he was trying to understand.
But after everything that happened, I was exhausted.
“I know my own signature, Ethan.””
“I didn’t mean—”
“I know.””
My voice softened.
“I know you didn’t mean it that way.””
He rubbed his face.
“My sister…”
He couldn’t finish.
But he didn’t need to.
We both knew.
Vanessa had a reason.
The problem was proving it.
A knock came at the door.
Before either of us answered, Detective Miller stepped inside.
He was in his early fifties, with tired eyes and a notebook in his hand.
“Mrs. Bennett?””
I nodded.
“I’m Detective Miller. I’m handling the investigation into what happened at the party.””
Ethan stood.
“Is Vanessa being arrested?””
The detective looked between us.
“Not yet.””
“Not yet?””
“Mr. Bennett, right now we have conflicting statements.””
“She pushed my wife.””
“We have your wife’s statement.””
“And hers?””
“She claims Claire lost her balance.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You believe that?””
“I believe evidence.””
The detective opened his notebook.
“That’s why I need to ask Mrs. Bennett some questions.””
Ethan looked ready to argue.
I touched his arm.
“It’s okay.””
The detective pulled a chair closer.
“Claire, before the incident, did you speak with Vanessa?””
I thought about the morning.
About the office.
About the documents.
“No.””
“Did she threaten you?””
“Not directly.””
“Did she know about the envelope?””
The question stopped me.
I looked at Ethan.
Then back at Detective Miller.
“How did you know about the envelope?””
The detective’s expression remained calm.
“Because your husband mentioned it when he gave us the purse.””
Ethan frowned.
“I told them because Claire told me it mattered.””
The detective nodded.
“Mrs. Bennett, I need to understand why this envelope was important.””
I looked down at my hands.
Because saying it out loud made it real.
“Because I found financial records.””
“What kind of records?””
“Missing money.””
“How much?””
I hesitated.
“Millions.””
The detective wrote something down.
“From where?””
“The Bennett family trust.””
Ethan immediately shook his head.
“Detective, my family has never had financial issues.””
“Everyone says that until they do.””
The room became silent.
Detective Miller looked at me.
“Did you tell anyone else about these documents?””
I thought back.
The office.
The envelope.
The party.
“No.””
“Not even your husband?””
“No.””
“Why?””
That question was harder.
Because I didn’t have a good answer.
Because part of me had been afraid.
Afraid that the person I trusted most might already know.
“I wanted to understand what I found before I accused anyone.””
Detective Miller nodded slowly.
“That was probably wise.””
He closed his notebook.
“One more thing.””
“What?””
“The hospital security cameras.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about them?””
“Someone entered the emergency waiting area shortly after you arrived.””
Ethan frowned.
“Who?””
The detective looked at him.
“Your mother.””
My breath caught.
“Margaret?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“She said she came to check on you.””
“So?””
“So she spent twelve minutes near the nurses’ station.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””
A horrible thought entered my mind.
“Did she go near my purse?””
The detective didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
“Where was it kept?””
“In the evidence room.””
“No,” Ethan said quickly.
“Police had it.””
“Yes,” Detective Miller replied.
“But before it was officially logged, it was sitting at the front desk for several minutes.””
My face went cold.
“Someone could have accessed it.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
The detective looked at his notes.
“We’re reviewing footage.””
After he left, Ethan stood by the window.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, he said quietly, “I don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“My mother?””
“I don’t know.””
“My sister?””
“I don’t know.””
He turned around.
“But you think it’s them.””
I looked away.
“I think someone in your family wanted those documents gone.””
The pain in his eyes was immediate.
“My family.””
I reached for his hand.
“I’m sorry.””
He sat beside me.
“No.””
“What?””
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For bringing you into this.””
“You didn’t.””
“Yes, I did.””
His voice cracked.
“You married me. You became part of this family. And now you’re lying in a hospital bed because of something connected to my name.””
I squeezed his hand.
“Ethan.””
“I should have protected you.””
“You tried.””
“I hit my sister.””
“You thought she hurt me.””
“I lost control.””
For a moment, I saw the man I fell in love with.
Not the angry man from the backyard.
Not the son trapped between his wife and his family.
Just Ethan.
The man who was scared.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Ethan?””
He slowly turned the phone toward me.
The name on the screen made my blood run cold.
*Vanessa.*
He answered.
“Why are you calling me?””
For several seconds, he only listened.
Then his face went pale.
“What do you mean she knows?””
I sat up.
“What is she saying?””
Ethan covered the phone.
“She wants to meet.””
“Why?””
He looked terrified.
“Because she says the documents you found were never supposed to exist.””
A chill moved through me.
“Put her on speaker.””
Ethan hesitated.
Then he did.
Vanessa’s voice filled the hospital room.
“Claire?””
I stared at the phone.
“What do you want?””
A long pause.
Then Vanessa whispered something that made Ethan freeze.
“I didn’t push you because of the money.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why?””
Her voice became quieter.
“Because I saw who was standing behind you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“The person who told me to stop you from leaving that office.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Who?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
And then she said a name neither of us expected.
“It was your husband’s father.””
I felt the room disappear.
May you like
Because Ethan’s father had been dead for two years.
And Vanessa had just claimed he was the one who ordered my attack.
