Chapter 6: The Father Who Came Back

I stared at the photograph until my eyes started to hurt.

The man standing outside the hospital entrance looked older.

Thinner.

His hair was almost completely gray.

There were lines across his face that I had never seen before.

But there was no mistaking him.

Richard Bennett.

Ethan’s father.

The man everyone said had died two years ago.

The man whose funeral I attended.

The man whose empty chair sat untouched during every Bennett family holiday.

Alive.

Standing outside my hospital.

My first instinct was to wake Ethan.

My second was to hide the phone.

Because if the picture was real, then everything had changed.

Not just the missing money.

Not just Vanessa.

Not just Margaret.

Everything.

I looked toward the chair beside my bed.

Ethan was asleep there.

His head rested against the wall.

One hand still held mine.

Even in his sleep, he hadn’t let go.

For a moment, I just watched him.

Because suddenly I had a terrifying question.

If Richard Bennett was alive…

Did Ethan know?

I hated that the thought even entered my mind.

But after everything I had discovered, trust wasn’t something I could give blindly anymore.

Slowly, I pulled my hand away.

Ethan woke immediately.

“What happened?””

His eyes were wide.

Like he had been waiting for something terrible.

I turned the phone toward him.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

He looked at the screen.

And the color disappeared from his face.

For several seconds, he didn’t speak.

Then he whispered:

“No.””

I watched him carefully.

“You know.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Ethan.””

“I don’t know.””

The same words.

The same impossible phrase.

But this time, I didn’t hear confusion.

I heard fear.

“Who sent this?””

“I don’t know.””

“Who has this number?””

“I don’t know.””

“Why are you looking at that picture like you’ve seen a ghost?””

His eyes moved to mine.

“Because I have.””

The answer sent a chill through me.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan stood slowly.

“When my father died…”

He stopped.

Then he corrected himself.

“When everyone thought my father died…”

I waited.

“There was something strange about the funeral.””

“What?””

“The coffin was closed.””

My breath caught.

“You never saw him?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“They said the accident damaged his body.””

I stared at him.

“And you accepted that?””

His face tightened.

“I was twenty-eight years old and grieving.””

His voice cracked.

“My mother was crying. Vanessa was falling apart. Everyone told me not to ask questions.””

“And you listened?””

“I was broken.””

That softened something inside me.

Because I knew grief could make people believe things they normally wouldn’t.

But it didn’t erase the secrets.

“Did you ever suspect he was alive?””

Ethan looked away.

“One time.””

“When?””

“A few months after his funeral.””

He walked toward the window.

“I received a letter.””

“What kind of letter?””

“No return address.””

“What did it say?””

He swallowed.

“‘Protect Claire.’”

My heart stopped.

Again.

My name.

Always my name.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought it was a cruel joke.””

“And now?””

“Now I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

A knock interrupted us.

Detective Miller entered.

He looked at our faces.

Then immediately knew something had happened.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

He looked at the picture.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get this?””

“Someone sent it.””

“Who?””

“We don’t know.””

He studied the image.

Then looked at Ethan.

“Mr. Bennett, did your father have any reason to fake his death?””

Ethan laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“If he did, I wasn’t told.””

Detective Miller looked at me.

“Mrs. Bennett, when was this sent?””

“Two minutes ago.””

He immediately pulled out his phone.

“I need to check the hospital cameras.””

“Why?””

“Because if Richard Bennett is here…”

He looked at the photo again.

“…he may not be the only person watching.””

The three of us walked toward the security station.

My body still hurt.

Every step reminded me that I was eight months pregnant and had nearly lost everything.

But somehow, the pain felt smaller than the questions.

At the security desk, Detective Miller spoke with the guard.

“Show me entrance footage from the last hour.””

The guard typed quickly.

Several screens appeared.

People entering.

Visitors leaving.

Doctors walking through hallways.

Then the image froze.

“There.””

Detective Miller pointed.

A man wearing a dark coat stood near the entrance.

My heart raced.

Richard.

Alive.

Watching the hospital.

But then Ethan whispered something.

“No.””

I turned.

“What?””

He stepped closer to the screen.

“Zoom in.””

The guard enlarged the image.

Richard was holding something.

A piece of paper.

No.

Not paper.

A photograph.

Detective Miller leaned closer.

“Can you enhance that?””

The guard tried.

The image became clearer.

And the photograph in Richard’s hand appeared.

My blood went cold.

It was a picture of me.

Pregnant.

Walking into the Bennett family office earlier that morning.

The same day I found the documents.

“He was following me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then another figure appeared on the screen.

A woman.

Walking toward Richard.

I recognized the coat first.

Then the necklace.

Margaret.

Ethan’s mother.

Meeting with her supposedly dead husband.

Ethan took a step backward.

“No.””

Detective Miller immediately saved the footage.

“Mr. Bennett…”

“My mother knew.””

His voice was barely audible.

“She knew.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He looked devastated.

“She lied to me.””

The screen continued playing.

Richard and Margaret stood together for several minutes.

Then another person arrived.

Vanessa.

The entire Bennett family.

Together.

Except one person.

Me.

Detective Miller watched carefully.

“This changes everything.””

“What do you mean?”” I asked.

He pointed at the screen.

“They weren’t trying to hide a family scandal.””

“Then what were they hiding?””

He looked at me.

“Your father-in-law’s disappearance.””

A strange silence followed.

Because suddenly the missing money seemed like a smaller part of something much bigger.

Richard Bennett had faked his death.

His family knew.

And somehow, I was connected.

A nurse rushed over.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“The doctor needs you back in your room.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“The baby’s monitor showed a sudden increase in stress.””

My heart dropped.

I immediately touched my stomach.

“No.””

Ethan was beside me instantly.

“We’re going.””

As we hurried back, Detective Miller stayed behind to collect evidence.

But before I reached my room, my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

*You found him.*

A second message appeared.

*Now ask him why he disappeared.*

Then one final message.

*Ask Richard Bennett who really tried to kill him.*

I stopped walking.

Because suddenly I understood.

Richard hadn’t faked his death because he wanted to escape.

He had faked his death because someone was trying to erase him.

And whoever that person was…

Had already tried once.

The hospital room door opened.

Inside, standing beside the window, was a man I had only seen in photographs.

Older.

Changed.

But alive.

Richard Bennett turned toward me.

His eyes filled with regret.

“Claire.””

I couldn’t move.

He took one step forward.

“I’m sorry.””

My voice trembled.

“For what?””

He looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“For letting my family believe I was dead.””

A pause.

Then he said the words that made Ethan freeze.

“And for letting you marry my son without telling you the truth.””

I stared at him.

“What truth?””

Richard’s expression broke.

“The truth that your family and mine have been connected for years.””

I felt the room spin.

“My family?””

He nodded.

“Your parents knew me.””

I froze.

“My parents?””

Richard looked toward the door.

May you like

Then whispered:

“And they were the reason I had to disappear.””
