Chapter 8: The Person Who Controlled My Life

I watched the corrupted video ten times.

Every time, the same words haunted me.

“I already handled Maya.””

Three words.

Three years of my life.

Three words that explained every birthday without my mother.

Every holiday where her name was never mentioned.

Every time I asked about her and Vanessa changed the subject.

She handled me.

Not protected me.

Not cared for me.

Handled me.

The next morning, I confronted her.

I found Vanessa outside my father’s house.

She was loading boxes into her car.

Leaving.

Of course.

The moment the truth came close, she was running.

“Vanessa.””

She stopped.

Slowly, she turned.

“You watched it.””

I stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

Her face remained calm.

Too calm.

“I made choices.””

“You manipulated me.””

“I raised you.””

“You controlled me.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You were a child.””

“And you used that.””

She looked away.

For the first time, she had no perfect response.

“What was on that paper?””

She didn’t answer.

“What did my father ask my mother to sign?””

Vanessa closed the trunk.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She sighed.

“It was a custody agreement.””

My heart dropped.

“You were trying to take me away from her?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She looked at me.

“It was the opposite.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“Your mother was planning to give up custody.””

I froze.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s a lie.””

She shook her head.

“I thought you deserved to know.””

I laughed.

“You expect me to believe you now?””

“No.””

She looked genuinely sad.

“I expect you to hate me.””

That surprised me.

She continued.

“But I won’t let you hate me for the wrong reason.””

I stared.

“Why should I listen?””

“Because your mother never told you what happened after that video.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at the house.

“Ask your father.””

I turned.

“Where is he?””

“He left.””

Of course he did.

Everyone left.

Everyone except the questions.

I found my father two hours later at the old park where he used to take me.

The same place where he taught me to ride a bike.

The same place where I once believed he was my hero.

He sat on a bench.

“You knew I would come here.””

He nodded.

“I hoped you would.””

I sat beside him.

“What happened?””

He was quiet.

Then he said:

“I was losing everything.””

I looked ahead.

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

He sighed.

“Your mother found out about my debt.””

“I know.””

“She wanted to leave.””

My chest tightened.

“Leave?””

“For a while. She wanted to take you and stay with her sister until things were stable.””

I looked at him.

“And you stopped her.””

“I panicked.””

The honesty hurt.

“I thought if she left with you, I would lose both of you.””

“So you lied?””

“Yes.””

The word came immediately.

No excuse.

No defense.

Just yes.

“I told myself I was protecting our family.””

He looked down.

“But I was protecting myself.””

I swallowed.

“What happened that night?””

He closed his eyes.

“Your mother was going to expose everything.””

“Everything?””

“She found proof that someone had been taking money from our accounts.””

I stared.

“Who?””

My father looked at me.

And whispered:

“Vanessa.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

“She was helping with finances.””

My heart pounded.

“She stole from us?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you protect her?””

My father looked ashamed.

“Because she threatened to expose me too.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“You both destroyed my family.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

The simple answer hurt most.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Thomas.

*Maya, I found the missing part of the video. You need to see this immediately.*

Attached was a file.

I opened it.

The video loaded.

And there was my mother.

Standing in our living room.

Holding the same document.

But this time, I heard her words.

“If I sign this, Maya loses me forever.””

Then Vanessa answered.

“You’re right.””

She smiled.

“But that’s exactly the point.””

I stopped breathing.

Because the video revealed the truth.

May you like

Vanessa had never wanted to replace my mother.

She wanted to erase her.
