Chapter 4: The Family Meeting

Samantha came downstairs wearing white trousers, a cream blouse, and the diamond earrings Victoria had bought her for her twenty-first birthday.

She looked like someone preparing for brunch, not someone who had spent the previous night destroying another person's belongings.

When she saw Dad standing beside the box, she stopped.

"Oh," she said.

"We're doing this now?""

Dad folded his arms.

"Yes. We're doing this now.""

Victoria appeared behind her daughter, still carrying her coffee.

"Daniel, I really don't think a confrontation is necessary not someone who had spent the previous night destroying another person's belongings.

Dad folded his arms.

Victoria appeared behind her daughter, still carrying her coffee.

"Daniel, I really don't think a confrontation is necessary.""

He turned toward her.

"Then perhaps you should have encouraged your daughter to tell the truth.""

Victoria's mouth tightened.

Samantha rolled her eyes.

"Oh my God. She told you I cut the dress, didn't she?""

Dad stared at her.

"Did you?""

She shifted her handbag higher on her shoulder.

"It.""

"It was an accident.""

I felt something cold move through me.

"An accident?""

Samantha looked at me.

"You were grabbing at me. I was trying to get away.""

"You cut it six times!""

"Because you wouldn't stop screaming!""

Dad raised a hand.

"Enough.""

The word echoed through the was an accident.""

Samantha looked at me.

"You cut it six times!""

"Because you wouldn't stop screaming!""

Dad raised a hand.

"Enough.""

The word echoed through the room.

Samantha went quiet, but her face had already changed. The carefree expression had vanished, replaced by the sharp, calculating look I knew too well.

"Dad, you know how Emily gets," she said.

"She was emotional. I was emotional. Things happened.""

"Things happened?"" Dad repeated.

He opened room.

He opened the box.

The ruined gown lay inside, its ivory satin disfigured by the cuts.

Samantha looked away.

Dad lifted the torn sleeve.

"Your sister has spent four years working toward her graduation. Your mother spent years designing this dress. Margaret spent months recreating it.""

He set the sleeve down.

"And you destroyed it because you were angry.""

Samantha crossed the box.

Samantha crossed her arms.

"Why does everyone care more about a dress than about me?""

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Victoria stepped forward.

"Daniel, Samantha has been feeling excluded for a long time. Emily gets all the her arms.

"Why does everyone care more about a dress than about me?""

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Victoria stepped forward.

"Daniel, Samantha has been feeling excluded for a long time. Emily gets all the attention because of Elena. Every important event becomes another opportunity to remind Samantha that she's second best.""

I stared at her.

"Graduation isn't about Samantha.""

"See?"" Victoria said.

"That's exactly what I mean. You never consider how your actions affect anyone else.""

"My actions?""

Dad turned toward attention because of Elena. Every important event becomes another opportunity to remind Samantha that she's second best.""

I stared at her.

"Graduation isn't about Samantha.""

"See?"" Victoria said.

"That's exactly what I mean. You never consider how your actions affect anyone else.""

"My actions?""

Dad turned toward Victoria.

"Stop.""

She looked stunned.

He continued.

"I have listened to you explain away Samantha's behavior for three years. I've heard about the clothes she borrows without permission, the money she spends without asking, the way she speaks to Emily when she thinks nobody is listening.""

Victoria's face flushed.

"That's a Victoria.

"Stop.""

She looked stunned.

He continued.

"I have listened to you explain away Samantha's behavior for three years. I've heard about the clothes she borrows without permission, the money she spends without asking, the way she speaks to Emily when she thinks nobody is listening.""

Victoria's face flushed.

"That's a ridiculous exaggeration.""

"Is it?""

He looked at Samantha.

"Do you remember the necklace Emily inherited from her mother?""

Samantha's eyes flickered.

I felt my stomach tighten.

The necklace had disappeared six months earlier. It was a delicate gold chain with a small oval pendant, one of the few pieces of jewelry Mom had worn every day.

I'd searched my bedroom, checked ridiculous exaggeration.""

"Is it?""

He looked at Samantha.

Samantha's eyes flickered.

I felt my stomach tighten.

The necklace had disappeared six months earlier. It was a delicate gold chain with a small oval pendant, one of the few pieces of jewelry Mom had worn every day.

I'd searched my bedroom, checked every drawer, and turned my mattress upside down.

Samantha had told me I was careless.

Victoria had suggested I'd misplaced it during a move.

I had eventually stopped asking.

"What about it?"" Samantha demanded.

Dad reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small velvet pouch.

My breath every drawer, and turned my mattress upside down.

Samantha had told me I was careless.

Victoria had suggested I'd misplaced it during a move.

I had eventually stopped asking.

"What about it?"" Samantha demanded.

Dad reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small velvet pouch.

My breath caught.

He opened it.

The gold necklace lay inside.

"Where did you get that?"" I whispered.

Dad looked at Samantha.

"Her handbag.""

Samantha went pale.

"You went through my things?""

"I was looking for the car keys this morning. Your bag was open on the hallway table.""

"That's private!""

"Then caught.

"Then perhaps you shouldn't keep other people's property in it.""

Victoria stepped between them.

"This is getting out of hand.""

Dad looked at her.

"No. This is what happens when a family stops pretending that bad behavior is normal.""

Samantha snatched the pouch from his hand.

"I didn't steal it!""

" perhaps you shouldn't keep other people's property in it.""

Victoria stepped between them.

"This is getting out of hand.""

Dad looked at her.

"No. This is what happens when a family stops pretending that bad behavior is normal.""

Samantha snatched the pouch from his hand.

"I didn't steal it!""

"Then explain why it was in your bag.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time, I saw something close to fear in her eyes.

Not remorse.

Fear of being caught.

Finally, she pointed at me.

"She gave it to me!""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"She said I could borrow it!""

"That's a lie!""

"YouThen explain why it was in your bag.""

She opened her mouth.

"That's a lie!""

"You always do this!"" Samantha shouted.

"You give me things, then take them back when you want Dad to feel sorry for you!""

Dad moved between us.

"That is enough.""

Samantha's eyes filled always do this!"" Samantha shouted.

"You give me things, then take them back when you want Dad to feel sorry for you!""

Dad moved between us.

"That is enough.""

Samantha's eyes filled with tears.

The transformation was immediate. Her shoulders dropped. Her voice became small.

"I didn't mean to hurt anyone.""

Victoria rushed to her side.

"Of course you didn't, sweetheart.""

I watched them embrace.

It was a with tears.

The transformation was immediate. Her shoulders dropped. Her voice became small.

Victoria rushed to her side.

"Of course you didn't, sweetheart.""

I watched them embrace.

It was a familiar performance. Samantha would cry, Victoria would defend her, and eventually Dad would ask everyone to calm down.

Then we'd all go back to pretending.

Except this time, Dad didn't move.

He walked to the dining table, pulled out a chair, and sat down.

"Victoria, Samantha, sit.""

Neither obeyed.

He repeated himself.

They exchanged a glance before taking the chairs opposite him.

I remained standing.

Dad looked at me.

"Emily, you can sit too, if you'd like.""

I sat beside him.

For several minutes, he asked Samantha simple questions.

Did she enter my room without permission?

Yes.

Did she take the scissors?

Yes.

Did she cut the dress?

After several evasive answers, she finally admitted it.

"Yes," she muttered.

"But she provoked me.""

Dad leaned forward.

"How?""

Samantha looked at me.

"She acts like she's better than everyone.""

"That isn't what?

"That isn't what I asked.""

"She gets everything!""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Your sister works for what she has. She earns her grades. She pays her own expenses when she can. The dress was a gift from me, and it was connected to a promise her dying mother made to her.""

He paused.

"You were jealous I asked.""

"She gets everything!""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Your sister works for what she has. She earns her grades. She pays her own expenses when she can. The dress was a gift from me, and it was connected to a promise her dying mother made to her.""

He paused.

"You were jealous. So you destroyed it.""

Samantha's face twisted.

"Maybe I was tired of hearing about Elena!""

The room went silent.

Even Victoria looked at her daughter in alarm.

Dad stood slowly.

"Your mother and I have been married for three years. I have never expected you to love Elena's memory. I have never asked you to replace. So you destroyed it.""

Samantha's face twisted.

"Maybe I was tired of hearing about Elena!""

Even Victoria looked at her daughter in alarm.

Dad stood slowly.

He glanced toward the photographs on the wall.

"But I will not allow her.""

He glanced toward the photographs on the wall.

"But I will not allow you to punish Emily for loving her mother.""

Samantha shoved her chair backward.

"So that's it? You're choosing her?""

"I'm choosing what's right.""

"She's not even your only daughter anymore, Dad. I'm your family too!""

Dad looked at her for a long moment.

"Then start acting like family.""

Samantha grabbed her handbag.

"Fine. Maybe I'll just leave.""

Victoria rose immediately you to punish Emily for loving her mother.""

Samantha shoved her chair backward.

"So that's it? You're choosing her?""

Victoria rose immediately.

"Daniel, you can't speak to her that way.""

"Then she should stop giving me reasons to.""

Samantha stormed toward the staircase.

Halfway up, she turned.

"You'll regret this.""

Dad didn't answer.

She disappeared into her bedroom and slammed the door.

Victoria remained beside the table, trembling with anger.

"You've humiliated her," she said.

"No.

"No," Dad replied.

"I've held her accountable.""

"She's twenty-one.""

"Exactly. Old enough to understand consequences.""

Victoria picked up her coffee.

"You have no idea what it's like to be a mother watching her child constantly come second.""

Dad's expression softened slightly.

"Victoria,," Dad replied.

"I've held her accountable.""

"She's twenty-one.""

"Exactly. Old enough to understand consequences.""

Victoria picked up her coffee.

"You have no idea what it's like to be a mother watching her child constantly come second.""

Dad's expression softened slightly.

"Victoria, I know you love Samantha.""

"Then why won't you defend her?""

"Because loving someone doesn't mean defending everything they do.""

She stared at him.

Then she looked at me.

"This isn't over, Emily.""

She followed her daughter upstairs.

I sat beside Dad, listening to their footsteps disappear.

"You didn't cause this.""

"But—"

"You are not responsible for the consequences of someone else's choices.""

I swallowed hard.

"Do you still want while, I whispered, "I'm sorry.""

"Do you still want me to graduate here? With everything going on?""

He looked almost offended.

"Emily, you have worked for four years for this day. You will walk across that stage. You will accept your diploma.

And if we have to sew every piece of that dress together in the parking lot, you will do me to graduate here? With everything going on?""

He looked almost offended.

"Emily, you have worked for four years for this day. You will walk across that stage. You will accept your diploma. And if we have to sew every piece of that dress together in the parking lot, you will do it.""

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.

Dad smiled.

Then his expression grew serious.

"There is one more thing.""

He reached for the leather portfolio I'd left on the counter.

"I should have told you about this a long time ago.""

He opened it to the back pocket and removed a sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.""

Dad held the envelope for a moment before handing it to me.
