Chapter 7: The Warehouse Where She Kept My Daughter

The white van turned into the old industrial district near the river.

I followed it from two blocks away.

Natalie was gripping the dashboard.

“Slow down,” she whispered.

“If she sees us, she'll move Sophie again.””

I nodded.

The van stopped outside Warehouse Seventeen.

A man in a black jacket opened the loading door.

The driver climbed out.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She was carrying a leather briefcase.

I parked behind an abandoned shipping container.

“Stay here,” I told Natalie.

“No.””

“You're injured.””

“She is my daughter.””

There was no point arguing.

I helped her out of the truck.

We approached the warehouse through a narrow service entrance.

The door was unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled of diesel fuel and wet cardboard.

Voices echoed from the far end.

I recognized Vanessa.

“Where are the original documents?””

A man answered.

“Martin has them.””

“Then get them.””

“He said Owen found the backup.””

Vanessa slammed her briefcase onto a table.

“Then find him!””

I looked through a gap between stacked pallets.

Sophie was sitting in a metal chair.

Her pink backpack rested beside her.

Her hands were tied loosely with a strip of fabric.

A stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.

I felt something inside me break.

“Daddy?””

Her voice was barely audible.

Vanessa turned.

I stepped into the open.

“Let her go.””

She looked at me.

Then at Natalie.

Her expression hardened.

“Well. The dead have returned.””

Natalie took a step forward.

“You tried to kill me.””

Vanessa shrugged.

“You're still alive.””

“Because my husband found me.””

“Unfortunately.””

Martin Hale emerged from a side office.

He carried a folder.

“Mr. Carter, this is becoming exhausting.””

I ignored him.

“Untie my daughter.””

Vanessa crouched beside Sophie.

“Sweetheart, remember what we discussed?””

Sophie shook her head.

Vanessa grabbed her chin.

“Tell Daddy why you're here.””

Sophie looked at me.

Then she whispered:

“Because Auntie Vanessa wants my name.””

I stared.

“What?””

Vanessa stood.

“Children repeat things they don't understand.””

Sophie began crying.

“She said I have to sign.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

Martin opened the folder.

“It's a guardianship acknowledgment. Nothing more.””

“She is four years old,” Natalie said.

“Which is why the document requires a guardian's authorization.””

Vanessa smiled.

“And you, Natalie, are no longer legally recognized as her guardian.””

Natalie laughed.

“You don't have a court order.””

“I have an emergency filing.””

“Which is not an order.””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Martin placed the folder on the table.

“Mrs. Carter, if you sign this temporary authorization, everyone can leave peacefully.””

I looked at the document.

It transferred control of Sophie's trust to Vanessa.

The wording was designed to appear temporary, but the final paragraph gave her authority to sell, mortgage, and liquidate the assets.

“You want my daughter to sign away her inheritance.””

“I want what's best for her.””

I pulled out my phone.

“Then explain this.””

I played Robert's recording.

His voice filled the warehouse.

“Vanessa, I know what you're doing.””

Her voice answered.

“You're making a mistake, Robert.””

“You're trying to take my daughter's land.””

“Your daughter won't be able to protect it.””

“Then you don't know my daughter.””

The recording continued.

Then came another voice.

Martin's.

“Once the property is transferred, all access records must be destroyed.””

Vanessa's face changed.

“Turn that off.””

I didn't.

The recording continued.

Then Robert spoke again.

“And if anything happens to Natalie, the entire trust will transfer to Sophie.””

Martin lunged toward my phone.

I stepped back.

Natalie rushed toward Sophie.

Vanessa grabbed her hair.

Natalie screamed.

I shoved Martin into a stack of wooden pallets.

A security guard appeared.

“Stop!””

Before he could reach us, a woman in a navy suit entered through the loading door.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

She held up an identification card.

“Eleanor Whitmore. Independent Trust Examiner.””

Two uniformed officers followed her.

Martin froze.

Vanessa stepped away from Natalie.

Eleanor placed a document on the table.

“Ms. Cole, the trust transfer has been frozen. Your authority has been suspended pending an investigation.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You can't freeze what you don't own.””

Eleanor looked at her.

“Actually, I can.””

She opened another folder.

“The emergency succession provision has been activated. Sophie Carter is now the protected controlling beneficiary.””

I looked at Natalie.

She was holding Sophie tightly.

Vanessa's expression changed.

“You're lying.””

“I'm not.””

Eleanor turned to me.

“Mr. Carter, your daughter has inherited the controlling interest in Northstar Infrastructure Group.””

The warehouse became silent.

Martin stared at the documents.

Vanessa looked at Sophie.

Then she whispered:

“You have no idea what your grandfather did.””

Eleanor closed the folder.

“Perhaps you should explain it.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Robert didn't build Northstar. He stole it.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She leaned toward me.

“Your father was supposed to own it. Robert took the company after Daniel disappeared.””

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

May you like

Then Vanessa said:

“And if you want to know why your father vanished, ask your mother.””
