Chapter 3: The Child Who Stayed Silent
Olivia arrived at the school twenty minutes later.
She didn’t remember the drive.
She only remembered one thing.
Her son’s face on that screen.
She pushed through the front doors.
The receptionist immediately stood.
“Ms. Miller—”
“Where is my son?””
The woman pointed down the hallway.
“Counselor’s office.””
Olivia walked quickly.
Then stopped.
Because through the glass window, she saw Ethan sitting alone.
His head lowered.
His small hands folded in his lap.
He looked nothing like the confident child who had hugged her that morning.
He looked defeated.
Olivia opened the door.
“Ethan.””
His head lifted.
“Mom?””
That one word almost broke her.
She crossed the room and hugged him.
He held onto her immediately.
“I’m sorry.””
She pulled back.
“For what?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“For making trouble.””
Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
She touched his cheek.
“You don’t apologize for being hurt.””
Ethan looked away.
The counselor, Ms. Patel, quietly stepped closer.
“Olivia, there’s more.””
Olivia looked at her.
“What more?””
Ms. Patel hesitated.
“We found something during the investigation.””
A tablet sat on the desk.
On it were several reports.
“Other students have complained about Mrs. Voss.””
Olivia stared.
“How many?””
“Six.””
“Why wasn’t I told?””
The counselor looked uncomfortable.
“Some complaints were dismissed as misunderstandings.””
Olivia looked toward Ethan.
“And my son?””
Ms. Patel lowered her voice.
“He never complained.””
That hurt more.
Because Olivia knew why.
Ethan had always been the child who protected everyone else’s feelings.
The one who said he was fine.
The one who smiled even when he wasn’t.
She sat beside him.
“Ethan, I need you to tell me the truth.””
He nodded slowly.
“Did Mrs. Voss do this before?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
Olivia felt the room disappear.
“How many times?””
Ethan looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“Ethan.””
“She said if I told, people would think I was weak.””
Olivia closed her eyes.
The anger inside her became something colder.
She turned toward the hallway.
Mrs. Voss was standing there.
Listening.
Olivia walked out.
“You told my son to stay quiet?””
The teacher crossed her arms.
“You’re twisting things.””
“You humiliated him.””
“I disciplined him.””
“You covered the camera.””
Mrs. Voss said nothing.
That silence was an answer.
Then the teacher smiled slightly.
“You think you can destroy my career because you’re powerful?””
Olivia stepped closer.
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“I think your own actions will do that.””
Mrs. Voss’s expression changed.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
But then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And her fear disappeared.
She answered.
“Yes?””
A few seconds passed.
Then she looked directly at Olivia.
“Your son wasn’t the only child involved.””
Olivia froze.
“What does that mean?””
Mrs. Voss ended the call.
And smiled.
“There are things you don’t know about what happened in that classroom.””
Olivia looked back at Ethan.
A terrible thought entered her mind.
What if someone had hurt him before?
What if he had been carrying this alone?
Then Principal Harris rushed into the hallway holding a folder.
His face was pale.
“Ms. Miller…”
She turned.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“We checked the previous recordings.””
“And?””
He looked at the folder.
“There was another camera.””
Olivia frowned.
“Another camera?””
“Yes.””
Principal Harris opened the folder.
“The one Mrs. Voss didn’t know about.””
He placed a printed image on the table.
And Olivia’s blood ran cold.
Because in the corner of the classroom footage…
Someone else was standing there.
Watching everything.
May you like
Someone who had never been mentioned.
A person who might explain why Mrs. Voss was so desperate to hide the truth.
