Chapter 9: The Last Piece of the Truth
Robert's phone went straight to voicemail.
Jace called three times.
Nothing.
Hank walked around the parking lot, checking every vehicle.
Emily stood beside Denise.
“Why would Robert disappear?””
Denise looked worried.
“Perhaps he received a warning.””
“From Victor?””
“Possibly.””
Jace approached.
“His truck is still here.””
Hank pointed toward the far end of the parking lot.
“Then where did he go?””
Emily looked down at the photograph her father had given her.
The picture of Rachel holding her as a baby.
Something about it bothered her.
She turned it over.
There was handwriting on the back.
A date.
And beneath it, a short sentence.
November 3. The day we lost everything.
Emily looked at Jace.
“That's the date from the accident report.””
Jace frowned.
“What accident report?””
“The one Mom left in the storage unit.””
Emily pulled out her phone and showed him the photograph of the document.
Jace read it.
His expression changed.
“Robert mentioned this.””
“Why would Mom write that date on a baby photograph?””
Jace looked closer.
“Because this photograph wasn't taken when you were a baby.””
Emily blinked.
“What?””
He pointed to the background.
A calendar hung on the wall.
The photograph had been taken years later.
Emily turned it over again.
The date was November 3.
Her mother's handwriting had been added afterward.
Jace looked at her.
“This wasn't a memory. It's a reminder.””
Emily stared.
“A reminder of what?””
Jace didn't answer.
Then his phone rang.
Hank.
“Jace, I found something.””
Twenty minutes later, they were at the old clubhouse.
Hank had located a second vehicle registered to Robert.
It was parked behind the building.
Inside, they found a folded note beneath the windshield wiper.
Emily recognized the handwriting.
Robert.
If I disappear, look inside the old office wall. Rachel knew I would eventually come back.
Jace stared at the note.
“The old office?””
Hank nodded.
They entered the clubhouse.
Dust covered the furniture.
The walls were decorated with old photographs, club patches, and framed newspaper articles.
Jace walked toward a wooden cabinet.
“Rachel used to sit here.””
Emily approached the wall behind it.
There was a small section of wood that looked newer than the rest.
Hank removed the cabinet.
Jace examined the panel.
A hidden latch clicked.
Behind it was a narrow compartment.
Inside lay a metal box.
Emily opened it.
There were several documents, a flash drive, and a sealed envelope.
The envelope had her name on it.
Emily Carter.
Her hands shook.
“Another letter?””
Jace nodded.
“Looks like it.””
She opened it.
My darling girl,
If you have found this, then the truth has finally reached you.
There is one thing I need you to understand about your father.
Daniel did not simply leave because he was afraid of losing money.
He was given a choice.
He could stay with us, tell the truth, and face the consequences.
Or he could walk away and let me carry the burden.
He chose to walk away.
Emily stopped reading.
Jace looked down.
She continued.
The night I discovered his involvement with Victor, I confronted him. I begged him to think about you.
He looked at me and said something I will never forget.
He said, "If I stay, I lose everything. If I leave, you get to keep the girl.""
Emily covered her mouth.
She read the sentence again.
Her father had known exactly what he was doing.
He hadn't simply disappeared.
He had chosen to abandon her.
The letter continued.
I wanted to hate him. But I couldn't spend my life teaching you to hate.
So I told you he was dealing with things.
I wanted you to have the freedom to grow up without believing you were the reason he left.
Tears fell onto the paper.
Then came the final paragraph.
There is another truth. Daniel was not the only person who helped me.
One of the men who protected us was Robert.
He saved your life before you were old enough to understand what danger meant.
Emily looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Jace reached for the flash drive.
“Let's find out.””
They connected the drive to an old laptop.
A video file appeared.
The date was November 3, several years earlier.
Jace pressed play.
The screen showed Rachel sitting in a small office.
She looked frightened.
Robert sat beside her.
“Emily is asleep in the back room,” Rachel said.
“I don't want her hearing any of this.””
Robert nodded.
“Victor is getting desperate.””
Rachel looked directly at the camera.
“If you're watching this, then I need you to know that Daniel was not acting alone.””
A second man entered the room.
Daniel.
Emily went rigid.
Her father looked younger, but unmistakable.
Rachel turned toward him.
“You promised me you would stop.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I can't.””
“You can. You just don't want to.””
“Victor knows where the documents are.””
“Then we give them to the police.””
Daniel slammed his hand against the desk.
“You don't understand what he'll do!””
Rachel stood.
“What about Emily? What do you think this is doing to her?””
Daniel looked toward the camera.
Then he said something that made Emily's blood run cold.
“Emily is better off without me.””
Rachel stared at him.
“She's four years old.””
“I know.””
“She asks for you every night.””
Daniel looked away.
“Then tell her I'm working.””
Rachel's voice broke.
“You've been saying that for months.””
Daniel walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he turned back.
“Don't make me choose between you and my future.””
Rachel answered quietly.
“You already chose.””
The video ended.
Emily sat perfectly still.
Jace closed the laptop.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Emily whispered, “He knew.””
Hank nodded.
“He knew.””
“He knew I was waiting.””
Jace moved closer.
“I'm sorry.””
Emily shook her head.
“I don't want anybody apologizing for him.””
She stood.
“I want the truth.””
The final folder contained financial records and a signed statement from Robert.
It revealed that Victor had used several shell companies to transfer money from the club and had attempted to conceal those transfers through fraudulent loans.
Daniel had helped him.
But the most important document was a letter from Victor himself.
It was addressed to Daniel.
You said Rachel had destroyed the records. I trusted you to handle it. If the girl ever finds the originals, we're both finished.
Emily read the sentence twice.
Then she looked at Denise.
“Can this be used?””
Denise nodded.
“It can be submitted to investigators, subject to authentication. It may also support a broader investigation into the financial misconduct.””
Jace looked at Hank.
“Where's Robert?””
Hank checked his phone.
A message had arrived.
I'm safe. Don't look for me. Victor knows I have the original documents. I'll contact you when I can.
Emily frowned.
“He's running?””
“Probably protecting himself,” Jace replied.
“But we need him.””
“We'll find him.””
The next morning, Denise called.
“Emily, I have good news.””
“What?””
“The financial investigation has moved forward. Authorities have obtained a warrant to search Victor's remaining business records.””
Emily sat down.
“And my father?””
“Daniel has agreed to cooperate with investigators.””
Emily frowned.
“Why?””
“Apparently, he has provided information about Victor's activities.””
“Does that mean he's sorry?””
Denise paused.
“Cooperation and remorse are not the same thing.””
Emily looked toward the photograph of her mother.
“I know.””
Then Denise continued.
“There is something else. Your father has asked to see you.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Why?””
“He says he wants to explain everything.””
Emily thought about the video.
The four-year-old girl waiting for her father.
The man who had looked at the camera and decided she was better off without him.
Finally, she answered.
“I'll see him.””
They met in a small room at the courthouse.
Daniel looked older.
His expensive suit was gone. His hair was uncombed, and dark circles sat beneath his eyes.
Emily sat opposite him.
“Hello, Dad.””
He looked surprised by the word.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
She placed the photograph of Rachel on the table.
“Why did you keep this?””
Daniel stared at it.
“Because she was the best thing that ever happened to me.””
Emily swallowed.
“Then why did you leave?””
He rubbed his hands together.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Victor. The debts. The police. Everything.””
“You were scared, so you left me?””
Daniel looked down.
“I thought your mother could give you a better life.””
“She worked two jobs.””
“I know.””
“We couldn't afford electricity.””
“I know.””
“I had nobody at my graduation.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I know.””
Emily leaned forward.
“No. You don't know. You weren't there.””
He covered his face.
For a moment, she thought he might cry.
Then he reached across the table.
“Can we start over?””
Emily pulled her hands back.
“I don't know.””
“I'm your father.””
“You're the man who left.””
Daniel nodded.
“I deserve that.””
She looked at him.
“Do you want to tell me something else?””
He hesitated.
Then he said, “Victor told me your mother had hidden money.””
Emily went still.
“What money?””
“Something separate from the trust. He believed she'd kept another account.””
Emily stared at him.
“Did you come back because of that?””
Daniel didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
She stood.
“Goodbye, Dad.””
“Emily, wait!””
She turned at the door.
He looked desperate.
“I really did love your mother.””
Emily's eyes filled.
“Then you should have loved the family she was trying to protect.””
She walked out.
That evening, Jace received a call from Robert.
“I found the final document,” Robert said.
“Where?””
“Rachel gave it to me before she died. I've kept it separate from everything else.””
“What is it?””
“A letter explaining the trust's final beneficiary conditions.””
Jace frowned.
“We already have the trust documents.””
“No. You have the financial documents. This is something else.””
Jace looked toward Emily.
She was sitting on the clubhouse sofa, reading one of her mother's old notebooks.
“What does it say?””
Robert took a breath.
“Rachel didn't leave the trust simply to Emily.””
Jace froze.
“What?””
“She left instructions that part of it would be released only after a specific condition was met.””
“What condition?””
Robert's answer was almost a whisper.
“Emily has to discover who her mother really trusted.””
May you like
Jace looked at Emily.
And for the first time, he wondered whether Rachel's final secret had anything to do with money at all.
