Chapter 4: The Diagnosis That Never Existed
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
The medical report lay between us, its pages perfectly aligned with the edge of my desk. It looked official enough to fool anyone who didn't know the doctor.
The letterhead was genuine.
The clinic address was genuine.
Even the patient number was real.
But the diagnosis was a lie.
Mason watched me study it.
"Shocking, isn't it?"" he said.
"Your own medical history may be more serious than you realized.""
I lifted my eyes.
"I've never been treated for this.""
"That's what people often say when they lack insight.""
Sienna stood near the door, one hand covering her mouth.
"Mason, you told me this was only for emergencies.""
He didn't look at her.
"It is an emergency.""
"You said it would be a private assessment.""
"And it is.""
I picked up the paper.
"Who signed this?""
Mason folded his arms.
"A licensed medical professional.""
"Name him.""
"It's printed there.""
"I know the doctor. He retired last winter. He hasn't seen me in three years.""
Mason shrugged.
"Perhaps he reviewed your records.""
"Without examining me?""
"Medical professionals have procedures for these things.""
I looked at Sienna.
"Did you believe this?""
She couldn't meet my eyes.
"He said it explained your behavior.""
"What behavior?""
"The long hours. The arguments. The way you get quiet when you're angry.""
I stared at her.
"So working late and being upset are symptoms now?""
"No, Daniel. That's not what I meant.""
"Then tell me what you meant.""
She began to cry again.
Mason stepped between us.
"Enough. The point is that this document establishes a pattern of instability. If the situation escalates, it may be necessary to involve a family court.""
I placed the report on the desk.
"You're planning to use a forged diagnosis to take my son.""
"No one is taking your son.""
"Then why is there a custody agreement?""
"Temporary arrangements.""
"Why is my money being transferred?""
"Financial protection.""
"Why are you teaching my three-year-old to call you Daddy?""
For the first time, Mason's composure cracked.
"Because someone has to be a father in this family!""
The words exploded through the office.
Sienna gasped.
I stepped closer.
"Say that again.""
Mason's nostrils flared.
"You heard me.""
"No. I want you to look at me and explain why you think you can replace me.""
He laughed bitterly.
"You want the truth? You built a beautiful house and filled it with expensive things, but you left your wife alone to raise your son. You paid for everything except the time they needed.""
I couldn't deny every word.
I had worked too much.
I had missed birthdays, school events, and dinners I should have attended.
But none of that gave him the right to steal my family.
"You could have been honest with me," I said.
"You could have told me you thought I was neglecting them. You could have resigned. You could have walked away.""
Mason leaned forward.
"But then I wouldn't have had a chance to give them a better life.""
"By forging my medical records?""
"By correcting a situation you refused to correct yourself.""
I looked at Sienna.
"Did you know about the forged report?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
Mason turned sharply.
"Be careful, Sienna.""
She recoiled as if he had struck her.
That reaction told me more than any confession could.
I took out my phone.
Mason's eyes narrowed.
"What are you doing?""
"Photographing the report.""
"Put that away.""
"Why?""
"Because it's confidential medical information.""
"Mine.""
He reached for the phone.
I stepped back.
"Don't touch me.""
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then Harris called from the hallway.
"Everything all right in there?""
Mason immediately changed his expression.
"Fine, Detective. We're discussing a sensitive family matter.""
I raised my voice.
"Detective, please come in.""
Mason's jaw tightened.
Harris entered a moment later.
He looked at the report in my hand.
"What is that?""
"An alleged medical assessment diagnosing me with a condition I've never been treated for.""
Harris glanced at Mason.
"Where did it come from?""
"He brought it to me.""
Mason gave a weary sigh.
"Daniel is refusing to acknowledge his problems.""
Harris took the paper.
"Who issued this report?""
Mason named the clinic.
Harris studied the letterhead.
"Was this assessment conducted today?""
"That's not relevant.""
"It is to me.""
Mason's face stiffened.
Harris took out his phone and photographed the report.
"I'll need to verify this with the clinic.""
Mason looked toward the window.
I noticed the movement.
He was calculating his options.
Harris continued.
"Until then, I suggest everyone refrain from making further accusations.""
A chime sounded from my phone.
An email notification.
The sender was Claire Bennett, the corporate attorney I had mentioned to Sienna.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: DO NOT SIGN OR AUTHORIZE ANY TRANSFERS.*
I opened it.
Daniel, I received a call this afternoon from someone claiming to represent your family. They asked me to confirm the validity of a transfer authorization bearing your signature. I refused because the document appeared inconsistent with the records in my possession.
I've since discovered that someone attempted to access your corporate files using credentials assigned to a former contractor.
Call me immediately. I believe your identity may be compromised.
I read the message twice.
Then I turned the screen toward Harris.
He read it in silence.
"Who is Claire Bennett?"" he asked.
"Our corporate attorney.""
"Can you contact her now?""
I pressed her number.
She answered on the second ring.
"Daniel?""
"It's me. I'm with a detective. Tell me what happened.""
"Someone sent me a transfer authorization directing your personal holdings into Northbridge Family Holdings. I refused to approve it because your signature didn't match the one on file.""
"Who sent it?""
"The request came through a secure portal using a contractor credential that should have been deactivated months ago.""
I looked at Mason.
He stared back without blinking.
Claire continued.
"Daniel, I need to ask you something. Have you recently authorized anyone to act as your representative in personal or corporate matters?""
"No.""
"Have you given anyone permission to submit medical or legal records on your behalf?""
"No.""
A pause.
"Then someone is attempting to manufacture a legal record around you.""
Harris leaned closer to the phone.
"This is Detective Harris. Can you preserve all relevant documents and access logs?""
"Absolutely.""
"Do you have evidence of who submitted the request?""
"I have the account identifier. I'll send it to you through an official channel.""
"Please do.""
Claire's voice softened.
"Daniel, there's something else. I found a document attached to the transfer request. It wasn't intended for me.""
"What document?""
"A draft petition for temporary emergency custody of your son.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"On what grounds?""
"Alleged mental instability, financial recklessness, and risk of parental abduction.""
I closed my eyes for a moment.
The complaint to the police.
The forged diagnosis.
The transfer of my money.
They weren't separate attacks.
They were pieces of the same construction.
Someone was building a version of me that didn't exist.
A man who was unstable.
A man who might flee with his child.
A man whose wife needed protection.
A man whose assets required someone else's control.
"Claire," I said, "who benefits if this petition succeeds?""
She hesitated.
"The proposed temporary guardian is listed as Sienna Vale.""
I looked at my wife.
She had gone very still.
"And the secondary emergency contact?""
Claire took a breath.
"Mason Reed.""
Harris held out his hand for the phone.
"Ms. Bennett, please send the documents to our department as soon as possible.""
"I will.""
The call ended.
Mason laughed softly.
"This is ridiculous. A draft petition proves nothing.""
Harris returned the phone to me.
"Perhaps. But it gives me several things to investigate.""
Mason looked at his watch.
7:43 p.m.
Seventeen minutes until eight.
He turned toward Sienna.
"Get Noah ready.""
She stared at him.
"Why?""
"We're leaving.""
Harris stepped in front of the door.
"Nobody is leaving yet.""
Mason's eyes hardened.
"You're exceeding your authority.""
"Then you can explain that to your attorney.""
Mason looked at me.
"You think you've won something.""
I said nothing.
He lowered his voice.
"You have no idea how much money has already moved. You have no idea who signed the documents. And you have no idea what happens when certain people realize the plan is falling apart.""
I felt a chill pass through me.
"Who are these people?""
Mason smiled faintly.
"Ask your wife.""
Then he turned and walked out of the office.
Harris followed him.
Sienna remained behind.
I watched her wipe her face with both hands.
"Did you know about the petition?"" I asked.
She shook her head.
"I knew he wanted temporary custody.""
"On the grounds that I'm mentally unstable?""
"He said the court would want an explanation for the separation.""
"Did you know he had forged a medical report?""
"No.""
"Did you know someone had already filed a police complaint?""
She looked at me.
"No.""
I believed that she was frightened.
I wasn't yet sure I believed she was innocent.
"Why did you agree to any of this?""
She sank into the chair beside my desk.
"Because Mason said he could destroy us.""
"How?""
"He showed me documents from your company. He said there were irregularities. He said if I didn't cooperate, he would send everything to the authorities.""
"Were the documents real?""
"Some of them.""
"What does that mean?""
She pressed her hands together.
"I don't know. He said there were payments to accounts I didn't recognize. He said your business partners were preparing to blame you for something.""
My mind raced through months of company records.
I had noticed unusual expenses in one of our subsidiaries. I had instructed the finance team to investigate them, but Mason had volunteered to help review our security vendors at the same time.
I had allowed him to see the contractor lists.
The access logs.
The names of people who handled sensitive information.
If he had used that access to move money or fabricate records, the damage could be enormous.
I stared at Sienna.
"Did he tell you what would happen tonight?""
She hesitated.
Then she nodded.
"What?""
"He said you'd leave before the gala ended.""
"Leave where?""
"The police would believe you'd run away. The press would report that you'd abandoned us. Mason would help me secure the house and protect Noah until things were settled.""
I felt sick.
"And what would happen to me?""
She whispered, "He said you'd be given a choice.""
"What choice?""
"Sign the papers and disappear quietly, or fight him in court while he released everything he had collected about you.""
I leaned against the desk.
"Everything?""
She nodded.
"He said he had enough to ruin you.""
A knock sounded at the door.
Harris stepped inside.
"Mr. Vale, I need you to come with me for a moment.""
I straightened.
"Why?""
"We've received new information from dispatch. There's an active vehicle registration alert connected to a car parked outside your property.""
My heart began to pound.
"What kind of alert?""
May you like
Harris looked directly at me.
"The vehicle is registered to Mason Reed. And according to the report, it was used in an incident earlier today involving a missing person.""
