Chapter 8: The Woman Who Had Been Planning This for a Year

The following Monday, I met Daniel Foster again.

This time, I went alone.

Maya had an important nursing assessment, and I refused to let the situation interfere with her future any more than it already had.

Daniel examined the second company certificate.

Then he opened a file containing the trust's correspondence.

"Mr. Bennett, I think we need to establish a timeline.""

I nodded.

He placed several documents on the table.

"The first inquiry about transferring the property interest was made eleven months ago.""

I stared at him.

"Eleven months?""

"Yes.""

"Before Maya was even asked to sign anything?""

"Correct.""

He showed me an email.

The sender was Denise.

She had contacted the trust's previous administrator, claiming she was helping Maya organize her financial affairs.

The email requested information about the property's valuation, rental income, and possible sale conditions.

I read the message twice.

"Did Maya authorize this?""

"No.""

Daniel continued.

"She was not a beneficiary contact at the time because she had not completed the required identity verification. Denise appears to have presented herself as a family representative.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What did the administrator tell her?""

"That confidential information could only be provided to Maya or an authorized legal representative.""

I nodded.

"Good.""

Daniel turned another page.

"However, the administrator did provide general information about the process.""

I looked at the document.

Denise had been told that Maya could eventually exercise her rights over the trust property.

There was also a note about a possible sale.

I leaned back.

"How did Denise know about the inheritance in the first place?""

Daniel looked at me.

"According to the records, Maya contacted our office last year.""

I frowned.

"She did?""

"Yes. She requested confirmation of the trust's existence and her beneficiary status.""

I thought about the conversation with Maya.

She had told me she wanted to make sure everything was real.

Apparently, she had started investigating quietly.

Daniel continued.

"Someone subsequently requested copies of correspondence sent to Maya's address.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

He slid another page across the table.

A delivery authorization.

The signature belonged to Denise.

I felt cold.

"She was intercepting the letters?""

"We cannot establish that every letter was intercepted. But this document indicates that at least one item was collected by her.""

I remembered the conversation at home.

Maya had said Denise found the solicitor's letter in the mail.

Now I understood why.

Daniel leaned forward.

"There is another matter.""

He opened a spreadsheet.

It listed several payments connected to the trust property.

"Over the past year, the property has generated rental income.""

I looked at him.

"How much?""

He pointed to the total.

Nearly $19,000.

I frowned.

"Where did that money go?""

"It remains in the trust account.""

I exhaled.

"All of it?""

"Yes.""

I sat back.

At least Denise hadn't managed to get that money.

Daniel continued.

"The property itself is a small commercial building with two residential units above it. Angela's parents placed it in the trust to provide long-term financial security for Maya.""

I studied the description.

I remembered visiting the building once with Angela.

It had been years before she died.

Her father had owned several small properties, and she had always spoken fondly of that one.

She once told me that the rental income could help Maya pay for college.

I had completely forgotten.

"Why didn't Angela tell me about the trust?""

Daniel looked thoughtful.

"She may have assumed you knew.""

I shook my head.

"She never explained it.""

He closed the folder.

"Regardless, Maya is the beneficiary. The trustees will communicate directly with her. We are also taking steps to prevent any unauthorized transactions.""

I nodded.

"What happens to Denise's submitted documents?""

"We are referring the matter to the appropriate authorities for review. The trust's legal team is preserving all relevant records.""

I thanked him.

Before leaving, I asked one more question.

"Can Denise still access any of Maya's information?""

"No. We have placed additional verification requirements on the account.""

I felt relieved.

But when I returned home, I discovered another problem.

Jordan was sitting at the dining table.

Brianna stood near the kitchen.

Both looked serious.

"What happened?"" I asked.

Jordan slid a letter toward me.

"It's from the credit card company.""

I opened it.

My name was printed at the top.

The account number looked familiar.

It was a credit card I had opened years earlier for household emergencies.

I had added Denise as an authorized user.

The balance was $14,700.

I stared at the figure.

"How?""

Jordan looked uncomfortable.

"Mom used it.""

"For what?""

He handed me a second sheet.

There were purchases from furniture stores, electronics retailers, hotels, and a jewelry shop.

I recognized some of the dates.

One purchase had occurred during the week Denise told me she was visiting her sister.

Another was from a hotel two towns away.

I looked at Jordan.

"Did she tell you about this?""

"No. I found the statements in her bedroom.""

Brianna sat down.

"There's something else.""

She placed her phone on the table.

"Mom asked me to help her move some furniture into storage last month.""

I looked at her.

"What furniture?""

"Boxes. A television. Some kitchen appliances.""

"Where did she take them?""

Brianna looked down.

"To the townhouse.""

I frowned.

"The townhouse she hadn't purchased?""

"Yes.""

I felt a headache forming.

"How did she get access?""

"She said she had paid for a temporary arrangement with the property owner.""

I looked at Jordan.

"Did you know?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

Brianna opened her phone.

"She sent me the address.""

I looked at it.

Then I looked at the photographs she had taken.

The townhouse had been furnished.

There were boxes in the living room.

A television mounted on the wall.

New curtains.

A dining table.

And in one photograph, Denise stood beside Patricia Collins.

They were smiling.

I stared at the picture.

"How long has this been going on?""

Brianna shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I looked at the credit card statement again.

The hotel charge.

The furniture.

The jewelry.

Then I noticed another payment.

A transfer to Patricia Collins.

$5,000.

I pointed at it.

"What's this?""

Jordan leaned closer.

"That's the woman who helped Mom register the company.""

Brianna nodded.

"Mom told me Patricia was helping her with the property.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did Patricia know about Maya's inheritance?""

Brianna looked at me.

"Yes.""

I stared at her.

"How do you know?""

"Because I heard them talking.""

"When?""

"Last month.""

She took a breath.

"They were in Mom's bedroom. I was outside the door. Patricia said something about needing Maya to sign before the trustees started asking questions.""

My hands went cold.

"What did Denise say?""

Brianna hesitated.

"She said Maya would eventually agree if she believed the house was in danger.""

I closed my eyes.

That was exactly what Denise had told Maya.

I looked at Brianna.

"Did you tell anybody?""

She shook her head.

"I didn't understand what they were talking about.""

I nodded slowly.

Then my phone rang.

It was Daniel Foster.

I answered.

"Mr. Foster?""

His voice sounded urgent.

"Mr. Bennett, I'm calling because we received another document from the company connected to your wife.""

I straightened.

"What document?""

"A request to change the trust's property management arrangements.""

"Who submitted it?""

"Patricia Collins.""

I stared at the photographs.

"Can she do that?""

"No. She has no authority. But the request included a signed management agreement.""

I closed my eyes.

"Whose signature?""

"Maya's.""

My stomach dropped.

"Again?""

"Yes. And this time, the document includes a witness statement from someone who claims to have met Maya in person.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who?""

Daniel paused.

Then said:

"Your wife, Denise.""

I looked at Jordan and Brianna.

They were watching me.

May you like

And I understood that Denise hadn't simply been trying to take the inheritance.

She had been trying to make it appear that Maya had willingly handed it over.
