Chapter 6: The Woman Elena Chose

The name on the declaration belonged to the last person I expected to see standing between my daughter and the woman I had married.

Rachel Collins.

My sister-in-law.

Elena's older sister.

The woman Vanessa had spent three years calling intrusive, bitter, and incapable of accepting that her sister was gone.

I stared at the scanned document until the words blurred.

Elena had named Rachel as Maya's independent advocate if I ever became unable to protect my daughter's interests. The declaration also instructed the trustee to notify Rachel if anyone attempted to obtain control of Maya's inheritance through coercion, fraud, or unauthorized transfers.

It was not an accusation against me.

It was a safeguard against anyone who might exploit my trust in them.

And Elena had specifically anticipated that someone could.

I called Margaret Collins immediately.

"Tell me exactly what this document means," I said.

"The supplementary declaration appoints Rachel as an independent advocate for Maya's financial interests under the circumstances outlined in the trust," Margaret explained.

"It does not give Rachel ownership of the money, and it does not automatically remove your authority as Maya's father.""

"Then why wasn't I told about it?""

"You were informed that the trust contained additional protections. However, the full declaration was sealed under your wife's instructions unless a triggering event occurred.""

"Such as the attempted transfer?""

"Precisely.""

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

"So Vanessa's request activated the declaration.""

"Yes. The trustee is now required to review the attempted transaction, preserve the relevant records, and notify the designated advocate.""

I looked toward the staircase.

Maya was upstairs with Devin. Vanessa had shut herself in our bedroom.

My home had become a place where everyone was waiting for the next truth to hurt them.

"Was Rachel aware of this appointment?"" I asked.

"She acknowledged the appointment when the trust was established. She was not permitted to access the financial records unless the conditions in the declaration were met.""

"Does she know what's happening now?""

"She was notified this morning.""

I closed my eyes.

That explained why Rachel had sounded so alarmed when I'd called her earlier.

She hadn't simply been worried about Maya missing a vacation.

She had known that Elena had prepared for something like this, even if she hadn't known when the safeguard might be needed.

"Please send me the complete declaration," I said.

"I already have. There is one more thing you should know, Mr. Bennett.""

"What?""

"The trustee's preliminary review identified a second document submitted with the attempted address change. It concerns your company, Bennett Family Holdings.""

My stomach tightened.

"What document?""

"A proposed loan agreement. It lists Maya's trust as the source of funds and your company as the borrower.""

"Did I sign it?""

"No.""

"Was it approved?""

"No funds were transferred. The agreement was not executed by the trustee, and no loan was authorized.""

I gripped the counter.

"Who submitted it?""

"The submission came through the administrative account connected to your household. We are preserving the electronic records and will provide them to the appropriate authorities if necessary.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

For a few seconds, I simply stood there.

Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

That was how much Vanessa had intended to move from a trust belonging to a sixteen-year-old girl.

Money Elena had set aside for Maya's education, independence, and future.

Money my wife had apparently convinced herself she was entitled to borrow because she believed she knew better than the person who had created the trust.

I heard footsteps behind me.

Vanessa stood in the kitchen doorway, holding her phone.

"Who was that?""

"Margaret Collins.""

She swallowed.

"What did she say?""

"Rachel has been notified.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"Of course she has.""

"She's Maya's designated advocate.""

"Your dead wife's sister gets to interfere in our marriage now?""

"This isn't about our marriage.""

"Everything is about our marriage, Andre! You keep pretending that whatever happens to Maya exists in some separate little world where I have no say.""

"You don't have a say in whether her inheritance belongs to you.""

Vanessa walked to the counter and placed her phone beside the coffee machine.

"Rachel has hated me from the beginning.""

"Rachel has never tried to take anything from you.""

"She never accepted me.""

"She tried. I watched her invite you to family dinners. I watched her offer to help Maya adjust when we married. You refused every offer because you thought she was questioning your authority.""

Vanessa laughed sharply.

"She was always reminding me that Elena had done things differently.""

"Perhaps because you kept telling everyone that the way Elena did things was wrong.""

Her expression hardened.

"You have no idea what it's like to live in a house where everyone compares you to a dead woman.""

I thought of Maya sitting upstairs with a photograph of her mother hidden inside a sketchbook.

"No," I said quietly.

"But I know what it's like to live in a house where a child feels she has to hide her mother's picture.""

Vanessa looked away.

I opened the email Margaret had sent and turned the screen toward her.

"Rachel has been appointed to protect Maya's interests. That means all the trust documents are being reviewed independently. The proposed loan is being examined, too.""

Vanessa's eyes moved across the screen.

When she reached the amount, she went pale.

"Andre, I can explain the loan.""

"Then explain it.""

"It was temporary.""

"That isn't an explanation.""

"The company needed working capital. We had an opportunity to purchase a commercial property, and the timing was important.""

"You told me the company had enough liquidity to cover the purchase.""

"We did, but using the trust would have protected our reserves.""

"Did you discuss it with the trustee?""

She said nothing.

"Did you ask Maya?""

"She's sixteen!""

"Exactly.""

Vanessa's hands began to shake.

"I was going to tell you.""

"When? Before or after the money was moved?""

She looked at me with a mixture of anger and desperation.

"You keep making me sound like a thief.""

"I didn't write your name on that loan agreement.""

"You don't know what happened!""

"Then tell me.""

She pressed her palms against the counter.

"I thought I was doing what was best for this family.""

I stared at her.

"Which family, Vanessa? The one that includes Maya, or the one you've been trying to build without her?""

Her eyes filled.

For the first time since the argument began, she had no quick response.

Then my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

"Andre," she said, "I've received the notification from Margaret. I'm coming over.""

"You don't have to.""

"Yes, I do.""

Her voice was firm but not unkind.

"Elena asked me to protect Maya if this ever happened. I hoped I'd never have to.""

Vanessa heard her through the speaker.

"Of course you did," she muttered.

Rachel continued as if she hadn't spoken.

"I'll bring the original papers I have. And Andre, please don't sign anything until we've reviewed it together.""

"I won't.""

"Good. I'll be there in twenty minutes.""

The call ended.

Vanessa grabbed her phone.

"I'm leaving.""

I didn't move.

"Where are you going?""

"To Rachel's house, apparently. Maybe I should get there before she arrives and tells you another story about how evil I am.""

"You're not going to Rachel's house.""

She stared at me.

"You can't tell me where to go.""

"No. But you aren't taking any documents, and you aren't touching Maya's belongings.""

Her face flushed.

"You think I'm going to steal from her?""

"I think you already tried to obtain control of money that wasn't yours. Until we understand exactly what happened, I won't take any chances.""

She looked toward the stairs.

"Where's Devin?""

"Upstairs.""

"Then I'm taking him with me.""

"You can speak to him. He gets to decide whether he wants to leave.""

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

"He's my son.""

"Yes. And he's old enough to tell us what he wants.""

She turned and hurried upstairs.

A moment later, I heard her bedroom door slam.

I stood alone in the kitchen, staring at the six suitcases beside the front door.

They were still packed.

Three of them belonged to people Vanessa had decided deserved a place on the vacation.

The others were filled with clothes, shoes, and accessories that had somehow seemed more important to her than whether my daughter felt welcome.

I began carrying the suitcases into the guest room.

Halfway through, I heard Maya's footsteps.

"Dad?""

I turned.

She stood at the top of the stairs.

"What's happening?""

I set down the suitcase.

"Rachel is coming over.""

Maya's face changed.

"Did something happen to Aunt Rachel?""

"No, sweetheart. She's fine.""

"Then why is she coming?""

I hesitated.

How could I explain that her mother had anticipated this moment? That Elena had left instructions because she knew love alone was not always enough to protect someone?

I walked upstairs and sat beside Maya.

"Your mother made some arrangements to protect your future. We need Rachel's help understanding them.""

Maya looked frightened.

"Did Mom know something bad was going to happen?""

"No. I think she simply wanted to make sure you would always have someone looking out for you.""

Maya stared at her hands.

"Vanessa says Aunt Rachel never wanted you to remarry.""

"That's not true.""

"She said Rachel would try to break us up.""

I took a slow breath.

"Rachel and I have disagreed about things. But she's never tried to break up our marriage.""

Maya looked at me.

"Then why does Vanessa hate her so much?""

I didn't have an answer that would help my daughter.

Before I could speak, the doorbell rang.

Rachel was standing on the porch with a thick blue folder tucked beneath her arm.

She looked tired.

She also looked terrified.

She stepped inside, hugged me briefly, and then turned toward Maya.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

Maya ran into her arms.

Rachel held her tightly.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"I'm so sorry.""

Maya pulled back.

"For what?""

Rachel glanced at me.

Then she looked at the folder in her hands.

"For not realizing sooner that you needed me.""

She opened the folder.

Inside was a copy of Elena's original trust agreement, several handwritten notes, and a sealed envelope bearing my late wife's signature.

Rachel looked at me.

"There's something Elena asked me to give you if the trust was ever threatened.""

I stared at the envelope.

"What is it?""

May you like

Rachel's expression grew grave.

"It's the letter she wrote to you.""
