Chapter 8: The Message That Changed Everything

The next morning, Tara was gone.

Not forever.

Just long enough to make me nervous.

She left a note saying she needed “space.””

But she took her laptop.

Her documents.

And the folder containing every piece of evidence she had collected against Maya.

I called Rebecca immediately.

“She may try to destroy evidence.””

Rebecca’s response was simple.

“Then document everything you already have.””

I spent the day doing exactly that.

But while organizing files, I found something else.

A message.

It was buried in an old email account connected to the family computer.

A message Tara had sent six months earlier.

To someone named Eric.

I knew that name.

Eric had been one of Tara’s coworkers.

The email was short.

*“I need this finished soon. Daniel is harder to convince than I expected.””*

I clicked the reply.

Eric’s response appeared.

*“Once Maya is living elsewhere, the house will finally be yours again.””*

My hands went cold.

I kept reading.

*“You promised this wouldn’t affect our plans.””*

Plans.

I stared at that word.

Not marriage problems.

Not emotional conflict.

Plans.

I called Tara.

She answered after several rings.

“What?””

“Who is Eric?””

Silence.

Then:

“Where did you see that?””

My chest tightened.

“So you know what I’m talking about.””

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stood up.

“No more listening while everyone else controls the story.””

She said nothing.

“Are you having an affair?””

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

“It’s complicated.””

That answer told me everything.

I hung up.

When I told Maya, I expected anger.

Instead, she looked sad.

“She really wanted me gone.””

I sat beside her.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“She did.””

I didn’t lie.

I couldn’t.

“Yes.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“But why?””

That question destroyed me.

Because I didn’t have an answer.

The next few days moved quickly.

The custody hearing was scheduled.

Rebecca helped me prepare.

She told me not to focus on revenge.

“Focus on Maya.””

That became my only goal.

At the hearing, Tara arrived with her attorney.

She looked confident.

Too confident.

Then she saw Maya.

And something changed.

Because Maya wasn’t hiding anymore.

She walked in holding my hand.

The judge reviewed the documents.

The false statement.

The household rules.

The messages.

The lawyer’s expression became increasingly serious.

Then Tara’s attorney stood.

“We would like to submit additional evidence.””

I looked over.

My heart sank.

Because I knew that expression.

Tara wasn’t finished.

A video was played.

It showed Maya yelling.

Crying.

Looking angry.

The room went silent.

Tara looked at me.

Like she had won.

Then Rebecca stood.

“May I ask when this recording was made?””

Tara’s attorney answered.

“Three months ago.””

Rebecca nodded.

“And may I ask what happened ten minutes before the recording began?””

No one answered.

Rebecca pressed a button.

Another video appeared.

The same room.

The same day.

But this time, the beginning.

Tara was standing in front of Maya.

Holding the phone.

Provoking her.

“Say it again,” Tara said.

Maya looked confused.

“I didn’t say anything.””

“Yes, you did.””

“I said I miss my mom.””

Tara stepped closer.

“And you think that means you get to ruin my marriage?””

Maya started crying.

The first video began moments later.

The room was silent.

The judge looked at Tara.

“Where did this recording come from?””

Rebecca turned toward me.

“I received it this morning.””

I looked confused.

“From who?””

Rebecca handed me a note.

A single sentence was written on it.

*“I should have protected Maya sooner.””*

May you like

Underneath was a signature.

Lauren.
