Chapter 5: The Man Vanessa Had Been Hiding

I knew the name Richard Hale, but I couldn't immediately remember where I'd heard it.

It wasn't a name that belonged to anyone in my professional circle. I'd never done business with a Richard Hale, and I couldn't recall meeting anyone by that name at a family gathering.

Yet the sight of it on Vanessa's document stirred an uncomfortable feeling.

It was as if I had heard a warning months ago and dismissed it because I trusted the person delivering the reassurance.

“Have you ever heard of him?”” Ethan asked.

“Not that I can remember.””

“Should we look him up?””

“Not yet. First, let's preserve what you found.””

We saved copies of the visible documents to a new folder on Ethan's laptop and photographed the screen with our phones. We didn't edit the originals or move files from Vanessa's profile.

Then I put the manila envelope into my briefcase and drove to Daniel's office.

His conference room overlooked a busy street, where delivery trucks rumbled past and pedestrians hurried beneath umbrellas.

Daniel listened as I explained the situation again, then examined the photographs.

He was in his early fifties, with silver hair, narrow glasses, and the calm manner of someone who'd spent years listening to people describe the worst days of their lives.

When he reached the photograph of the signature, he stopped.

“Have you ever signed this form?””

“No.””

“Did you authorize your wife to prepare it?””

“No.””

“Did you authorize anyone named Richard Hale to act for you?””

“No.””

Daniel made a note.

“Then we need to establish whether this was merely a draft, whether anyone submitted it, and whether any financial institution relied on it.””

“What about the property document?””

He studied the page Ethan had photographed.

“This appears to be planning material, not a recorded deed. I can't determine from this image whether anything was filed with the county. We'll verify that.””

He placed the papers in a neat stack.

“Michael, I want you to understand something. Suspicious documents are serious, but we must distinguish between a proposal, an attempted transaction, and a completed transaction. We won't assume the worst until we have records.””

“I understand.””

“Have you checked the deed to your house?””

“I have the original in my study.””

“Good. Keep it secure. I'll have my office check the public property records and help you review the estate documents you currently have.””

I hesitated.

“Daniel, what if my wife has been trying to get control of everything I own?””

He removed his glasses.

“Then we'll respond based on what the evidence shows. But don't forget that your immediate priority is protecting yourself and your son, not proving a theory before we have the facts.””

I nodded.

He glanced at the last photograph.

“Who is Richard Hale?””

“I don't know.””

“Then that's where we begin.””

When I returned home, Ethan was waiting in the kitchen.

The house smelled of burnt toast. A mug sat abandoned beside the sink, and the clock above the stove showed 3:42.

“Did the lawyer say anything?”” he asked.

“He's checking the records. He told me not to jump to conclusions.””

Ethan nodded.

“I understand.””

I studied him.

“You've been carrying this alone for days. You don't have to protect me from bad news.””

“I'm not trying to protect you.””

“What are you trying to do?””

He looked down at the table.

“Protect the house.””

The answer silenced me.

He wasn't worried about money. He wasn't worried about losing his bedroom or his possessions.

He was worried about losing the one place that had remained stable after his mother died.

I pulled out the chair beside him.

“Listen to me. Even if something terrible has happened, we'll deal with it. The house is important, but you're more important.””

He gave a small nod.

Then he took his phone from his pocket.

“There's something I haven't shown you.””

My shoulders tightened.

“What now?””

He opened a text conversation with Jessica.

The first message was from two weeks earlier.

Jessica: Does your dad ever talk about changing his will?

Ethan's response read:

No. Why?

Jessica had replied:

Mom says it's time he got everything organized.

A day later, she had sent another message.

If he asks you to sign anything, make sure you read it carefully. Don't let Mom rush you.

I looked up.

“Why didn't you show me this before?””

“Because I thought she was trying to help.””

“Did Jessica say anything else?””

Ethan scrolled.

The next message was dated three days later.

Jessica: Do you know a guy named Richard Hale?

Ethan: No. Who is he?

Jessica: Nobody. Forget I asked.

I stared at the screen.

“Why would she ask about him and then tell you to forget it?””

“I don't know.””

He continued scrolling.

Then his expression changed.

“Dad, look at this.””

A message had arrived the previous night, shortly before the anonymous threat.

It was from Jessica.

Please don't tell Mom I warned you. I think she's making a huge mistake.

Ethan had replied:

What mistake?

There was no answer.

I leaned back.

“Call her.””

He shook his head.

“She won't answer me.””

“Try again.””

Ethan pressed the call button.

The phone rang four times before going to voicemail.

He ended the call and sent a text.

I need to talk to you. Dad knows about the documents.

We waited.

A minute passed.

Then another.

Finally, the phone vibrated.

Jessica had replied.

Don't talk to me over text.

Ethan typed back.

Then meet us.

The answer came almost immediately.

Not at the house. Tonight. Seven o'clock. The coffee shop on Maple Street.

I stared at the message.

“Why seven?””

Ethan shook his head.

“I don't know.””

“Ask her whether Richard Hale will be there.””

He typed the question.

This time, Jessica didn't answer.

At 4:15, Vanessa's car pulled into the driveway.

I saw her through the window, talking on her phone before she stepped out. She looked toward the house, then toward the guesthouse.

She ended the call and hurried inside.

“Michael, we need to talk.””

I closed Ethan's laptop.

“About what?””

“Jessica says you've been interrogating her.””

“I'm asking questions about documents I found bearing my name.””

“You have no right to involve her.””

“Then she should stop asking Ethan about my will.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

For the first time, she looked genuinely caught off guard.

“What are you talking about?””

“Jessica asked Ethan whether I planned to change my will. She also asked him about Richard Hale.””

Vanessa's face lost its color.

She recovered quickly, but not quickly enough.

“Richard is a financial adviser.””

“Whose adviser?””

“Someone I know.””

“Do I know him?””

“Why does that matter?””

“Because his name appears on documents concerning my property and accounts.””

Vanessa put her handbag on the counter.

“You're twisting everything.””

“Then explain it.””

She took a deep breath.

“Richard has been helping me organize some financial matters. I wanted to make sure everything would be in order if something happened to you.””

“Why would you need to organize my accounts without telling me?””

“Because you never finish anything!””

The shout echoed through the kitchen.

“You've been promising to update your estate plan for years. You put everything off. You travel constantly. You act as though nothing can happen to you.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I was trying to help.””

“By preparing documents with a signature I didn't write?””

She froze.

Then she pointed at Ethan.

“He showed you that?””

“Did you prepare the form?””

“I didn't submit anything.””

“That wasn't my question.””

Vanessa's hands began to tremble.

“Michael, I have spent eighteen months trying to make this family work. I have tolerated your son's attitude, your constant references to Laura, and the fact that every important decision in this house revolves around you.””

“This isn't about Laura.””

“Everything is about Laura!””

She struck the counter with her palm.

“Her photographs. Her furniture. Her son.

Her memories. You married me, but I have never been allowed to take her place.””

“You were never asked to take her place.””

“Then what was I supposed to be?””

“My wife.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Your wife? I have been treated like a temporary visitor in a house where everyone still belongs to a dead woman.””

Ethan stood up.

“Don't blame Mom for this.””

Vanessa spun toward him.

“Your mother is gone, Ethan! She doesn't care what happens here!””

The room went silent.

I had never wanted to strike anyone in my life, but at that moment I understood how anger could overwhelm reason.

I took a step toward Vanessa.

“Get out.””

She stared at me.

“What?””

“Go to the guesthouse. Go to a hotel. I don't care where you go tonight, but you're not going to stand in this kitchen and speak to my son like that.””

Her mouth opened, then closed.

“You can't be serious.””

“I'm serious.””

“You're throwing me out over a few documents?””

“No. I'm telling you to leave this room because you've crossed a line.””

She grabbed her handbag.

“You'll regret this.””

“Maybe. But I won't regret protecting my son.””

She stormed out through the back door.

Ethan sank into his chair, breathing hard.

I sat beside him.

“I'm sorry you had to hear that.””

He shook his head.

“I've heard worse.””

The words made me look at him sharply.

“What do you mean?””

He stared at the tabletop.

“Nothing.””

“Ethan.””

He took a deep breath.

“Last month, Vanessa told me that if something happened to you, I'd probably end up with nothing because Jessica would make sure everything went to her.””

I felt a heavy pressure settle in my chest.

“She said that to you?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought she was just angry.””

He rubbed his eyes.

“Dad, I don't care about the money. I don't need the house to be mine. I just don't want to lose you and then lose everything Mom left behind.””

I put my arm around his shoulders.

“You won't lose me.””

He leaned against me for a moment, the way he used to when he was a child.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel's office number appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“Michael, we have an update.””

I straightened.

“What did you find?””

“Our preliminary property-record check shows no new deed recorded against your house. That's good news. We're also reviewing the existing estate documents.””

“And the financial authorization?””

“We're still waiting for confirmation from the bank. However, I found something you should know.””

“What?””

“Richard Hale is associated with a company that offers estate-planning and asset-management services. There are several similarly named individuals, so I haven't confirmed that this is the same person.””

I glanced at Ethan.

“Can you tell me anything else?””

“Not yet. But I suggest you avoid signing anything and keep all communications in writing where practical.””

“Understood.””

Daniel paused.

“One more thing. I found a recent inquiry in the public business registry that may be relevant. It concerns a company formed under a name connected to someone in your household.””

My stomach tightened.

“What company?””

He read the name.

*Carter Family Asset Management LLC.*

I stared at the wall.

I had never formed a company by that name.

“Who registered it?”” I asked.

“That's what we're trying to establish. The filing lists a registered agent, but the ownership details aren't immediately clear.””

“Can you send me the record?””

“I'll have my office forward the public filing and explain what we can verify.””

We ended the call.

Ethan looked at me.

“What did he say?””

I told him.

He slowly shook his head.

“Dad, that's the name I saw in the folder.””

I turned toward him.

“You saw this company name before?””

“Yes. It was on the property planning notes. I thought it was just a proposed name for something.””

I looked at the clock.

6:21 p.m.

Jessica had asked us to meet her at seven.

I grabbed my coat.

“We're going to Maple Street.””

Ethan stood.

“What if Vanessa finds out?””

“Then she'll find out.””

We walked toward the front door.

As I reached for my keys, my phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from Daniel's office.

Attached was the public filing for Carter Family Asset Management LLC.

I opened the document.

The company had been registered two months earlier.

The mailing address belonged to a commercial office building downtown.

The registered agent was a local business-services firm.

And under the section listing the organizer was a name that made my heart stop.

*Vanessa Carter.*

But it was the second page that made me realize the situation was far worse than I'd imagined.

The document listed an intended managing member.

Not Vanessa.

Not Jessica.

Not Richard Hale.

It listed me.

And beside my name was an electronic certification stating that I had personally authorized the filing.

I had done no such thing.

At the bottom of the page was a date.

September seventeenth.

The same day Vanessa had supposedly been celebrating her birthday with Jessica.

I stared at the screen, then looked at Ethan.

He was watching me with a fear I'd never seen in his eyes before.

“Dad,” he whispered, “what if she isn't trying to take your money?””

I swallowed.

“What else could she be trying to take?””

He glanced at the document.

May you like

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“What if she's trying to make it look like you gave it to her?””
