Chapter 9: The Truth About My First Promise

I spent hours staring at that document.

My signature.

My name.

My words.

Again.

Another piece of my life that looked like a lie.

I called the lawyer.

“I need to know if this is real.””

The woman on the phone was quiet.

“Mr. Carter, we believe it is authentic.””

“Believe?””

“There are inconsistencies.””

“What kind?””

She explained that the document was filed properly.

But there were missing pages.

Missing attachments.

And one unusual detail.

“The signature was witnessed by someone who was not listed as a legal representative.””

“Who?””

She paused.

“Your father.””

I closed my eyes.

My father.

Again.

When I got home, Maya was waiting.

She knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I sat beside her.

“I found another document.””

Her face fell.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“Was it bad?””

I looked at my daughter.

“No.””

I smiled sadly.

“It was proof that someone spent years trying to make me believe I didn’t choose you.””

She didn’t understand.

So I explained.

The document.

The signature.

The missing pages.

Then she asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Did you ever not want me?””

I answered immediately.

“No.””

She looked relieved.

“But I was scared.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“When I first met you, I was terrified.””

She smiled slightly.

“Really?””

“Really.””

I told her about the hospital.

The first night.

How I held her and had no idea what I was doing.

“I didn’t know how to be a father.””

She listened.

“But I knew one thing.””

“What?””

“That I didn’t need to be perfect. I just needed to stay.””

Her eyes filled.

“I stayed.””

I held her hand.

“And I will keep staying.””

That evening, Tara came home.

She looked exhausted.

“I need to tell you something.””

I almost said no.

But I wanted the truth.

All of it.

She sat down.

“Your father pressured me.””

“How?””

“He told me if Claire came back, everything would fall apart.””

“That still doesn’t explain the documents.””

Tara cried.

“I changed things.””

“What things?””

“The letter.””

“The adoption paperwork?””

She nodded.

“Some of it.””

I stared.

“Some?””

She looked away.

“There were things your father did that I didn’t know about.””

“What?””

“He paid people.””

The room went silent.

“For what?””

“To make sure Claire couldn’t challenge the adoption.””

I felt sick.

“And you went along with it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because I loved Maya.””

I shook my head.

“You loved having Maya.””

The words hurt.

But they were true.

Tara cried harder.

“I was afraid.””

I looked at her.

“You were afraid of losing a child who loved you.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“But you never thought about the mother who lost her.””

She had no answer.

A week later, we met Claire.

All three of us.

It was uncomfortable.

Painful.

But necessary.

Claire looked at Maya.

“I never stopped looking for you.””

Maya cried.

“I thought you left me.””

Claire shook her head.

“Never.””

They hugged.

And I watched my daughter meet a part of herself that had been hidden.

For the first time in months, I saw peace on her face.

But the story wasn’t finished.

Because after the meeting, Claire handed me one final envelope.

“I found this after my legal case reopened.””

I looked at it.

“What is it?””

“Something your father kept hidden.””

Inside was a letter.

From my father.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*“Daniel, if you ever discover what happened to Maya, you need to know one thing…”*

I kept reading.

May you like

And the final sentence changed everything.

*“Tara was not the person who started this.””*
