Chapter 8: The Evidence Hidden in the Farmhouse

Richard poured himself a drink like he owned the place.

Maybe that was what bothered me most.

Not his confidence.

Not his arrogance.

The familiarity.

He acted like Willowbrook was already his.

“Sit down, Charles,” he said.

I stayed standing.

“You have five seconds to explain why you’re here.””

He smiled.

“Still stubborn.””

“Still avoiding questions.””

Stephanie walked beside him.

“We don’t need to fight.””

I looked at her.

“You brought your father here.””

She didn’t answer.

Richard leaned against the table.

“Your father was exactly like you.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about him.””

“He was idealistic.””

“He was honorable.””

Richard smiled.

“That’s one word for it.””

I stepped forward.

“You tried to take his land.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I tried to save him from a bad decision.””

“A bad decision?””

“Keeping eighty-seven acres of farmland while the world changed.””

I looked at Stephanie.

“And now you’re using your daughter to finish what you started.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

“You should be careful with accusations.””

“I have documents.””

“So do I.””

He pulled a folder from his briefcase.

My stomach tightened.

“What is that?””

“A copy of your mother’s financial records.””

I stared.

“How did you get those?””

Stephanie looked uncomfortable.

Richard ignored her.

“Your mother has struggled financially.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

He opened the folder.

“Equipment repairs. Medical expenses. Farm maintenance.””

I said nothing.

Because some of it was true.

Willowbrook wasn’t easy.

But it wasn’t failing.

My mother had kept it alive through determination.

Richard smiled.

“You see? This isn’t about greed.””

“It’s exactly about greed.””

“No.””

He leaned closer.

“It’s about reality.””

I looked at him.

“You know what my father said?””

Richard’s smile faded.

“He said land isn’t valuable because of what you can build on it.””

I paused.

“It’s valuable because of what you’re willing to protect.””

For the first time, Richard looked angry.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*Check the old barn. Your father left something there.*

I stared at the screen.

Richard noticed.

“What is it?””

I put my phone away.

“Nothing.””

But suddenly, I knew exactly where I needed to go.

I left without another word.

When I reached Willowbrook, it was almost midnight.

Rain covered the fields.

The old barn stood exactly as it had for decades.

I unlocked the side door.

Inside, everything smelled like wood and oil.

Like my father.

I searched for nearly twenty minutes.

Then I saw it.

A loose wooden panel behind the old workbench.

I pulled it away.

A small metal box sat inside.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

And a recording device.

I pressed play.

My father’s voice filled the barn.

“Margaret, if you’re hearing this, something went wrong.””

I froze.

“Thomas?””

My father continued.

“Richard will never stop trying to get this land.””

I sat down.

“I’m sorry I’m leaving you to handle this.””

My eyes burned.

“But I know you. You’ll protect Charlie before you protect yourself.””

I closed my eyes.

Then came the words that changed everything.

“There is one thing Richard doesn’t know.””

A pause.

“The land was never the only thing I protected.””

I looked at the documents.

The first page had a name.

Not mine.

Not my mother’s.

Richard Whitmore.

My father had been investigating him.

And the final document revealed why.

Richard hadn’t just wanted Willowbrook.

He needed it.

May you like

Because years ago…

he had built his entire fortune on a lie.
