Chapter 9: The Last Stitch

The old studio stood at the end of a narrow country road.

It was surrounded by trees and a rusted iron fence.

My mother had worked there for nearly fifteen years.

I remembered visiting as a child.

The walls were covered with fabric samples. Sunlight poured through enormous windows. My mother used to sit at a long wooden table, drawing patterns while music played softly in the background.

Now the building looked abandoned.

The windows were boarded up.

The garden was overgrown.

A new security camera had been installed above the entrance.

Adrian parked several hundred yards away.

"Victor owns the property through a shell company," he said.

Charlotte looked through the windshield.

"Why would he buy it?""

"Because he believes the master recording is here.""

I stared at the building.

"Then that's where we'll find it.""

Adrian turned toward Marcus.

"Two teams. One at the rear entrance. One at the east side.""

Marcus nodded.

I reached for the door.

Adrian caught my wrist.

"Wait.""

"What?""

"If Victor is inside, he may have armed guards.""

"I know.""

"Then stay behind the security team.""

I looked at him.

"I've spent my entire life being told to stay quiet and stay out of the way.""

"That's not what I'm asking.""

"Then what are you asking?""

He paused.

"To let me keep you alive.""

His voice was quieter than usual.

I looked away.

"Don't make promises you can't keep.""

He released my wrist.

Charlotte touched my shoulder.

"We'll do this together.""

I nodded.

The side entrance was unlocked.

That worried me more than a locked door would have.

We entered through a narrow corridor.

Dust covered the floor.

Old furniture stood beneath white sheets.

The smell of wood and fabric brought back memories I hadn't thought about in years.

My mother used to call this place her second heartbeat.

I walked toward the main studio.

The doors were open.

Inside, the long wooden table was still there.

The sewing machines had been removed, but their outlines remained on the floor.

I approached the far wall.

There was a large framed photograph of my mother and Daniel.

Someone had taken it down and left it leaning against a cabinet.

I lifted it.

Behind the frame was a small metal panel.

I pressed the phoenix symbol.

Nothing happened.

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Try the flame.""

She touched the lower engraving.

A quiet click sounded.

The panel opened.

Inside was a small compartment containing a brass key and another handwritten note.

The last stitch is never the end.

I read it aloud.

Charlotte examined the note.

"Maybe it's about the embroidery.""

I looked around.

There were three large tables in the studio.

One had belonged to my mother.

One to Daniel.

One to my father.

I walked toward my mother's table.

A small drawer was locked.

The brass key fit.

Inside was a black leather notebook.

I opened it.

The first page contained a list of names.

Victor Sloane.

Patricia Cole.

Thomas Hart.

And beneath them, another name.

Adrian Blackwood.

I looked up.

Adrian had entered the room.

He saw the page.

His expression changed.

"What?""

I pointed to his name.

"Why is your name here?""

He stared at it.

Then he closed the notebook.

"Because I was there that night.""

The room went silent.

Charlotte stepped forward.

"What night?""

Adrian looked at me.

"The night your mother died.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"You told me you knew my father.""

"I did.""

"You told me you worked with my mother.""

"I did.""

"But you never said you were there.""

He exhaled.

"I was twenty-two. I was working for my father, who had a financial partnership with Victor Sloane. I was sent to retrieve documents from your mother's studio.""

"Which documents?""

"The original patent agreements.""

"Why?""

"Because Victor wanted to destroy the evidence that he'd stolen Daniel's work.""

I stared at him.

"What happened?""

Adrian looked down.

"I arrived after the accident. Your mother was already gone.""

"Did you see the car?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know the brakes had been tampered with?""

"I suspected.""

"Then why didn't you tell the police?""

His jaw tightened.

"Because my father threatened to destroy my family if I spoke.""

I stepped backward.

"You knew.""

"I was young.""

"She was my mother!""

"I know.""

"You knew someone had killed her, and you did nothing!""

His face tightened.

"I have regretted that decision every day for twenty years.""

I couldn't look at him.

Charlotte moved between us.

"Evelyn, we need the recording.""

I nodded slowly.

"You're right.""

Adrian didn't try to stop us.

We searched the notebook.

The final pages contained a series of diagrams.

One showed a phoenix with two wings.

Another showed a flame.

The last showed a needle passing through a circle.

Charlotte studied it.

"Look at the thread.""

I leaned closer.

The diagram wasn't simply an embroidery pattern.

It was a map.

The needle pointed toward the north wall.

We moved together.

A large wooden cabinet stood there.

I pulled open the doors.

Inside were dozens of old fabric rolls.

Most were ruined by moisture.

But one remained sealed inside a protective plastic covering.

Midnight-blue silk.

Copper embroidery.

A smaller version of Phoenix Rising.

I touched it.

My mother had made it.

The dress was unfinished.

The final flame had been left open.

Charlotte examined the stitching.

"There's something inside the seam.""

We carefully removed the fabric.

A small metal container slipped out.

Inside was a memory card.

Adrian immediately called his technical specialist.

Within minutes, the final recording was recovered.

My mother's face appeared again.

This time, she was sitting beside Daniel.

My uncle looked exhausted.

"Claire," he began, "we have to tell the girls the truth.""

My mother nodded.

"They deserve to know.""

Daniel looked directly at the camera.

"Thomas has been working with Victor, but not because he supports him. Thomas has been pretending to help him so he can collect evidence.""

I felt my breath catch.

The recording continued.

"Thomas knows Victor ordered the theft. He's gathering the documents needed to expose him. But Victor suspects him.""

My mother took Daniel's hand.

"That's why we've decided to hide the final patent records. The company will remain protected until our daughters are old enough to claim it.""

Daniel looked away.

"There's another problem.""

"What?"" my mother asked.

"Someone inside Blackwood has been giving Victor information.""

Adrian went still.

My mother continued.

"We don't know who. But we know Victor has access to every meeting, every document, and every security report.""

The video paused.

Then my mother spoke again.

"Thomas, if you're watching this, I need you to understand something.""

She looked directly into the camera.

"Do not trust the man who offers to protect our daughters without telling them the truth.""

I turned toward Adrian.

He looked devastated.

The recording continued.

"To Evelyn and Charlotte, if you ever find this, remember that you belong to each other. Never let anyone convince you that one of you is more deserving than the other.""

She smiled.

"And whatever happens, finish the phoenix together.""

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

"Beautiful speech.""

Victor Sloane.

He stood with two armed men.

Patricia was beside him.

Her face was bruised, and one arm was bandaged.

I stared at her.

"You escaped the hospital?""

Patricia smiled weakly.

"Some people are very helpful when money is involved.""

Victor stepped into the room.

"Give me the memory card.""

Adrian moved forward.

"No.""

Victor raised his weapon.

"Don't make me repeat myself.""

Charlotte grabbed my hand.

I looked toward the side door.

Marcus wasn't there.

Neither was the rest of the security team.

Victor smiled.

"Your bodyguards are busy.""

Adrian glanced at me.

"Get behind me.""

Victor laughed.

"Still playing the hero?""

He pointed the gun at Adrian.

"Your father made the same mistake.""

Adrian froze.

I looked at him.

"His father?""

Victor's smile widened.

"Didn't he tell you?""

He turned toward me.

"Adrian's father wasn't just my business partner. He was the man who arranged your mother's final meeting.""

My stomach dropped.

Adrian's voice became deadly quiet.

"Don't.""

Victor ignored him.

"Thomas discovered the truth and tried to expose us. So we gave him a choice. Stay silent, or watch his daughter disappear.""

I looked at Adrian.

He didn't deny it.

Victor stepped closer.

"And now you're making the same mistake, Evelyn. You think this is about a dress.""

He extended his hand.

"The memory card.""

I looked at Charlotte.

She was staring at the unfinished gown.

Then she whispered something.

"The last stitch.""

I understood.

The final flame wasn't just a pattern.

It was a lock.

My mother had left one final instruction.

Finish the phoenix together.

I took the needle from the table.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"What are you doing?""

I ignored him.

Charlotte picked up the copper thread.

Together, we completed the final stitch.

A tiny mechanical click sounded inside the wooden table.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

Victor's expression changed.

"No.""

I reached for it.

He raised his weapon.

Adrian moved.

A shot exploded.

The envelope fell to the floor.

Charlotte screamed.

Adrian collapsed against the table.

May you like

And Victor shouted:

"GET THE DOCUMENTS!""
