Chapter 5: My Father's Last Secret
I read the letter twice.
Then a third time.
My father's handwriting was unmistakable.
The slightly slanted letters.
The heavy pressure on certain words.
The small ink mark near the bottom of every page.
I had spent years believing I knew everything about his final months.
Apparently, I didn't.
My darling Camille,
If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped you would never have to face.
I know Vanessa. I know how she behaves when she believes nobody is watching. And I know she has spent years trying to convince you that your place in this family depends on her generosity.
It does not.
The house was purchased with my money. Bennett Holdings was built with my work. The creative archive belongs to you. And the future of everything I built should never depend on someone else's permission.
I have made arrangements to protect you.
But there is something more important.
Do not spend your life trying to make people love you when they have already decided what you're worth.
I stopped reading.
My eyes blurred.
Richard quietly moved a box of tissues toward me.
I shook my head.
“I'm fine.””
He didn't argue.
I continued.
You were always the most talented person in the room. You were also the person least likely to demand recognition.
I hope that never changes.
But I want you to understand something.
There is a difference between humility and allowing people to erase you.
Never confuse the two.
Love, Dad.
I lowered the letter.
For several seconds, the room was silent.
Then Richard spoke.
“Daniel asked me to hold that letter until the estate's independent review was completed.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
“Because he suspected Vanessa might attempt to challenge the trust.””
I swallowed.
“Did she?””
“Not successfully.””
He opened his briefcase again.
“Your father established a separate holding company three months before his death. It owns the mansion, several commercial properties, and the majority of Bennett Holdings.””
I stared at him.
“Who controls it?””
Richard gave me a small smile.
“You do.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“What?””
“Your father transferred the voting shares into a protected trust. You're the sole beneficiary and controlling director.””
I stared at the document.
The trust had been administered by an independent legal firm.
Vanessa had never controlled it.
She had only managed certain household expenses while I was completing my education.
And she had apparently spent three years pretending otherwise.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Your father wanted you to have time to build your own life before taking on the responsibility.””
I looked down at the letter.
“Did he know about Asteria?””
Richard smiled.
“He knew about the first sketches.””
I laughed softly.
“He hated my first butterfly design.””
“He said the wings looked like broken umbrellas.””
I laughed again.
This time, the tears came.
Richard waited.
When I finally looked up, he was smiling.
“He was very proud of you, Camille.””
I folded the letter carefully.
“Thank you for keeping it.””
“There's one more thing.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Richard slid a second document across the table.
It was a board resolution.
The date was three months before my father's death.
At the bottom were several signatures.
Including his.
“What is this?””
“Your appointment as chairwoman of Bennett Holdings, effective upon the completion of your twenty-fifth birthday.””
I looked at the date.
My twenty-fifth birthday had been six months earlier.
I stared at Richard.
“I'm the chairwoman?””
“Yes.””
I sat back.
For three years, Vanessa had treated me like an unwanted guest in my own home.
She had controlled the household staff.
She had decided which rooms I could use.
She had told people I was financially dependent on her.
And all that time, she had been living in a house owned by a company I controlled.
Richard cleared his throat.
“Your father would have found this rather amusing.””
I smiled.
“I think he would.””
At five o'clock, I returned to the main ballroom.
The performers were preparing for the final rehearsal.
Marcus approached immediately.
“Where have you been?””
“Learning something about my father.””
He looked at the letter in my hand.
“Everything all right?””
I nodded.
“Better than all right.””
I handed him the trust document.
He read it.
Then his eyebrows rose.
“Camille.””
“Yes?””
“You own the Bellamy estate?””
“Technically, my holding company does.””
“And the company?””
“Yes.””
“And the controlling shares?””
I smiled.
“Yes.””
Marcus slowly lowered the document.
“Does Vanessa know?””
“No.””
“Does Brielle?””
“No.””
He stared at me.
Then he laughed.
“I'm beginning to understand why your father trusted you with everything.””
I looked toward the stage.
“Let's finish the rehearsal.””
At 6:15 p.m., my family arrived at the venue.
I saw them through the glass doors.
Vanessa wore a black evening gown with a diamond necklace.
Brielle wore a silver dress beneath a long coat.
And beneath the coat, I could see the unmistakable outline of my butterfly wings.
Richard Harrington approached them.
Vanessa immediately smiled.
“Richard! I'm so glad you could make it.””
He nodded politely.
“Vanessa.””
Brielle stepped forward.
“Mr. Harrington, do you think Asteria will be here soon?””
Richard looked at her.
“I believe she is already here.””
Brielle glanced around.
“Where?””
“Somewhere close.””
Vanessa laughed.
“She's being mysterious. That's what artists do.””
Richard didn't smile.
He looked toward me.
I was standing beside the production desk, reviewing the opening sequence.
Vanessa followed his gaze.
When she saw me, her expression turned sour.
“Camille! What are you doing here?””
I looked up.
“Working.””
She laughed.
“Of course. Can you find someone to show us to the VIP lounge?””
Marcus appeared beside me.
“Good evening, Ms. Bennett.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Oh, hello. I'm Vanessa Bellamy.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“Excellent. We're here for the private meeting with Asteria.””
Marcus glanced at his tablet.
“Your meeting is scheduled for seven.””
“Wonderful. And Brielle will be joining the opening performance.””
Marcus didn't answer.
Vanessa's smile faltered.
“Is there a problem?””
“The creative director will discuss that with you.””
“Of course.””
She looked at me.
“Camille, don't stand there. Help Brielle with her gown.””
I didn't move.
Brielle pulled the coat off her shoulders.
The butterfly wings unfolded.
A nearby assistant gasped.
“Oh, my goodness. That's the Asteria design.””
Brielle smiled.
“Yes. It's mine.””
The assistant looked confused.
“It's yours?””
“Of course.””
I stepped forward.
“Brielle.””
She turned.
“What?””
“You need to remove that gown.””
Her face hardened.
“Not this again.””
“The gown is registered as stolen property.””
Vanessa stepped between us.
“Enough. You are not going to humiliate my daughter.””
Marcus looked at the security officer.
“Please bring the authentication scanner.””
Vanessa frowned.
“What is that for?””
Marcus didn't answer.
A security assistant approached carrying a small handheld device.
He scanned the silver clasp on the back of the gown.
A soft electronic tone sounded.
Then the screen turned red.
<badge color="danger">UNAUTHORIZED POSSESSION</badge>
The assistant looked at Marcus.
“Registration confirmed. Original owner: Asteria. Unauthorized transfer detected.””
Brielle went pale.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“This is a mistake!””
Marcus held out his hand.
“Ma'am, please remove the garment.””
“You cannot be serious!””
“The garment belongs to the creative director.””
Vanessa pointed at me.
“Then ask her! Camille has been obsessed with this ridiculous dress for months!””
I looked at her.
“I don't need to explain anything.””
Brielle's voice rose.
“Mother, do something!””
Vanessa turned to the security officer.
“Do you know who I am?””
“Yes, ma'am,” he replied.
“Then you know you cannot treat us like criminals.””
The officer remained calm.
“I'm asking you to return property that has been reported as unauthorized.””
Brielle began crying.
“You're ruining my night!””
I looked at her.
“No, Brielle. You did that yourself.””
Vanessa stepped toward me.
“You think you're powerful because you know a few people here?””
I said nothing.
“You're still the same little girl who needed my permission to leave this house!””
I looked directly into her eyes.
“Actually, Vanessa, I don't need your permission for anything.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Then why are you still living in my house?””
I took a breath.
And before I could answer, Marcus received a message.
He read it.
Then he looked at me.
“Camille, the board is ready.””
I nodded.
“Good.””
Vanessa frowned.
“What board?””
Marcus turned toward the main ballroom.
“Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention?””
The conversations began to fade.
The orchestra stopped tuning.
Guests turned toward the stage.
A giant screen illuminated above the ballroom.
The event's official emblem appeared.
A silver moon surrounded by hundreds of butterflies.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Tonight, the Midnight Masquerade welcomes the woman whose vision has shaped this event for the past three years.””
Vanessa smiled.
Brielle quickly wiped her tears.
“Finally,” she whispered.
Marcus continued.
“Her work has transformed our annual charity gala into one of the most celebrated fundraising events in the country.””
The screen changed.
A series of photographs appeared.
The opening stage.
The costumes.
The lighting designs.
The original sketches of the butterfly gown.
Then a photograph of a woman standing beside the dress during its first fitting.
It was me.
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Brielle stared at the screen.
Marcus raised his microphone.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the creative director of the Midnight Masquerade.””
He turned toward me.
“Please welcome Asteria.””
The ballroom fell silent.
I walked toward the stage.
My heels clicked against the marble floor.
The lights followed me.
Every camera turned.
And behind me, I heard Brielle whisper:
“That's impossible.””
I climbed the steps.
Marcus handed me the microphone.
I looked out at the crowd.
Then I looked directly at my family.
“Good evening,” I said.
A wave of applause filled the ballroom.
“I've spent three years building this event in the belief that creativity should speak louder than appearances.””
I paused.
“Tonight, I'd also like to remind everyone that a beautiful costume does not make someone its owner.””
A few guests exchanged glances.
Brielle looked as though she might faint.
Vanessa stood completely still.
I continued.
“Every costume, every performance, and every design presented tonight has been created by a dedicated team of professionals. Their work deserves respect, and their ownership deserves protection.””
I turned toward the giant screen.
The original photograph of my gown appeared.
Then the ownership certificate.
Then the forged document.
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Brielle grabbed her arm.
“Mother,” she whispered.
“What is that?””
I looked directly at them.
Then I said the words I had been waiting three years to say.
“My name is Camille Bennett. And I am Asteria.””
The applause was deafening.
But I wasn't finished.
Because just as Marcus approached to take the microphone, another notification appeared on the giant screen.
A message from the gala's legal department.
*EMERGENCY: THE BELLAMY ESTATE OWNERSHIP RECORDS HAVE BEEN VERIFIED.*
I looked at the screen.
Then at Vanessa.
Her hands began to tremble.
And for the first time in three years, she looked at me not as an inconvenience.
But as a threat.
Because the next announcement wasn't about the stolen gown.
May you like
It was about the mansion she had spent three years calling hers.
And the woman who actually owned it was standing on the stage.
