Chapter 8: The Money My Mother Never Got to Recover
My father stared at the bank statement.
He didn't blink.
He didn't move.
He simply read the account holder's name again.
Denise Johnson.
Then he looked at the deposit history.
"Four hundred thousand dollars," he whispered.
Anthony folded his arms.
"That's what was left.""
Dad looked up.
"What do you mean, what's left?""
Anthony sighed.
"The money was invested.""
"Where?""
"Various projects.""
"Which projects?""
Anthony glanced at Denise.
She looked furious.
"Anthony, don't say another word.""
He ignored her.
"Marcus, your company was going through a difficult period. I was helping manage certain investments.""
Dad slammed his hand against the table.
"Without my authorization?""
Anthony raised his voice.
"You were too busy building your empire to pay attention to what was happening!""
"That was my money!""
"And I made sure some of it survived!""
Harold stepped between them.
"Both of you need to remain calm.""
Dad looked at the statement again.
"Why was this money deposited into Denise's personal account?""
Anthony hesitated.
Then he answered.
"Because she was supposed to manage it.""
Denise laughed.
"That's not true.""
Anthony turned toward her.
"Really?""
She stepped closer.
"You told me it was temporary.""
"It was.""
"You said the money belonged to the company.""
"Some of it did.""
"Then why did you tell me to keep it?""
Anthony stared at her.
"Because you were the one Marcus trusted!""
The room fell silent.
My father slowly turned toward his wife.
"What?""
Denise looked away.
Anthony continued.
"Marcus, you need to understand. I couldn't transfer everything directly. Angela was watching the accounts. She kept asking questions.""
Harold opened his folder.
"Continue.""
Anthony looked irritated.
"She found the transfers. She started collecting evidence. She was going to report us.""
My stomach tightened.
"Us?""
Anthony glanced at Denise.
She whispered, "Anthony, stop.""
He ignored her.
"Angela discovered the account. She wanted the money returned.""
Dad looked horrified.
"Did you threaten her?""
Anthony shook his head.
"No.""
"Did Denise?""
Anthony didn't answer.
Dad stepped closer.
"Did you threaten my wife?""
Anthony's expression hardened.
"Marcus, you need to understand something. Angela was making accusations that could have destroyed several businesses.""
"She was my wife!""
"And Denise was trying to protect her future!""
I felt sick.
I looked at Denise.
"Did you know Mom was investigating you?""
She stared at me.
Then she said something that made the room feel colder.
"Your mother should have stayed out of things that didn't concern her.""
Dad's face changed.
"Denise.""
She looked at him.
"She was always interfering. Always asking questions. Always acting like she knew everything.""
"She was investigating missing money.""
"She was making our lives difficult!""
"Our lives?""
Denise finally snapped.
"Yes! Our lives! Do you think I wanted to spend every day being compared to a dead woman? Do you think I enjoyed living in a house where every photograph reminded me I would never be first?""
I stared at her.
There it was.
The bitterness.
The jealousy.
The truth behind every cruel comment.
She hadn't wanted to become my mother.
She had wanted my mother erased.
Dad slowly stepped away from her.
"You knew Angela was investigating the missing money.""
Denise's eyes filled.
"I knew she suspected something.""
"And you married me anyway?""
She shook her head.
"Marcus, I loved you.""
"Then why did you steal from me?""
"I didn't steal everything!""
The admission came out too quickly.
Anthony closed his eyes.
Harold immediately took out his phone.
Dad looked at Denise.
"How much did you take?""
She started crying.
"I was trying to secure my future.""
"How much?""
"I don't know.""
"How much, Denise?""
She covered her face.
"Some of the money went to Anthony.""
Anthony laughed.
"Don't put this on me.""
"You told me to move it!""
"And you agreed!""
Dad looked as if he might collapse.
I stepped toward him.
"Dad?""
He raised a hand.
"I'm okay.""
But he wasn't.
Harold quietly collected the documents.
"We have enough information to request a full financial investigation. We should stop discussing details until the relevant records are secured.""
Anthony stood.
"I'm leaving.""
Harold looked up.
"That would be unwise.""
Anthony ignored him.
He grabbed his jacket.
But before he reached the door, my father spoke.
"You're not leaving until you tell me one thing.""
Anthony stopped.
"What?""
"Did you know Angela was dying when you moved the money?""
Anthony looked back.
"Marcus—"
"Answer me!""
Anthony's expression hardened.
"Yes.""
Dad's face crumpled.
I felt something inside me break.
He had known.
Anthony had known my mother was sick.
And instead of helping her recover the money she had spent years protecting, he had continued moving it.
Dad sat down.
His hands covered his face.
I looked at Anthony.
"Get out.""
He stared at me.
"Excuse me?""
"You heard me.""
He looked toward Dad.
Marcus didn't move.
Anthony walked out.
Denise remained standing.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she reached for her handbag.
"Marcus, I think I should go.""
Dad looked up.
"Where?""
"To my sister's.""
"Fine.""
She blinked.
"That's it?""
He stood.
"Yes.""
"You're not going to stop me?""
"No.""
She looked shocked.
"After everything I've done?""
Dad's voice trembled.
"That's exactly why I'm not stopping you.""
She picked up her bag.
Then she looked at me.
"You think this makes you special?""
I stared at her.
"No.""
"You think your mother won?""
I took a breath.
"No. I think she protected me.""
Denise's face twisted.
"She never trusted me.""
I answered quietly.
"She had reasons.""
She turned and walked out.
The front door closed.
My father remained in the living room.
Harold gathered his documents.
"I'll arrange for the records to be preserved and reviewed by the appropriate professionals. We should also notify the lender about the disputed loan application.""
Dad nodded.
"Do whatever needs to be done.""
Harold looked at me.
"Malik, your mother's trust remains protected. No one has successfully transferred its ownership or taken control of the assets based on the documents we've reviewed.""
I nodded.
For the first time, I felt a little relief.
Then Harold said something else.
"There is one more matter.""
Dad looked up.
"What now?""
Harold removed a separate envelope.
"This was discovered among the original estate papers.""
He placed it on the table.
It was addressed to Marcus.
My father stared at the handwriting.
"Angela wrote this?""
Harold nodded.
"She instructed me not to deliver it unless evidence of financial misconduct was established.""
Dad opened it.
His eyes moved across the first paragraph.
Then his hands began shaking.
He read silently for almost a minute.
Finally, he sat down.
"What is it?"" I asked.
Dad looked at me.
"Your mother knew.""
"Knew what?""
He swallowed.
"She knew I had signed some of the original transfer documents.""
I frowned.
"But you said you didn't.""
Dad shook his head.
"I didn't know what I was signing.""
Harold spoke carefully.
"Angela believed Marcus had been given incomplete paperwork. She suspected his signature had been used to authorize transfers he did not understand.""
Dad looked at the letter.
"She tried to tell me.""
I stared at him.
"Did you listen?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
He wiped his eyes.
"I thought she was accusing people without evidence. I told her she was becoming paranoid.""
I felt my throat tighten.
My mother had been dying.
She had been trying to protect my father from being manipulated.
And he hadn't believed her.
Dad continued reading.
Then he reached the final paragraph.
His expression changed.
"What?"" I asked.
He handed me the letter.
I read it.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, I hope you have finally understood why I asked you to be careful.
I do not blame you for trusting people. That is one of the things I have always loved about you.
But trust without questions can become dangerous.
I have made arrangements for Malik because I do not know what the future holds.
There is one final document Harold is holding. It concerns the property and a promise I made before our marriage.
Please do not be angry with me when you learn the truth.
I looked up.
"What promise?""
Harold took out a final folder.
"Angela established an additional protection related to the family home.""
Dad frowned.
"What protection?""
Harold opened the folder.
"An occupancy agreement.""
I blinked.
"What does that mean?""
"It means Angela arranged for Malik to have the right to remain in the family home under specific conditions, including the death of either parent or a qualifying dispute involving the trust.""
Dad stared.
"So nobody could throw him out?""
Harold nodded.
"Correct.""
I remembered the suitcase.
The marble wall.
My father's voice.
You're leaving today.
My mother had anticipated the possibility that someone might try to remove me.
And she had legally protected me.
Dad lowered his head.
"She knew.""
Harold nodded.
"She was worried.""
My father began to cry.
Not quietly.
He covered his face and wept.
I stood beside him.
For a moment, I wanted to put my arms around him.
Then I remembered how he had looked at me the day before.
How easily he had believed Denise.
How quickly he had decided I no longer belonged.
I stayed where I was.
Harold closed the folder.
"Marcus, there is one more thing Angela asked me to explain.""
Dad looked up.
"What?""
"She left a separate investment account for Malik. It was funded through a business arrangement she entered into before she became ill.""
Dad frowned.
"Which business?""
Harold looked at me.
"Johnson Commercial Holdings.""
I blinked.
"That's Dad's company.""
"Not exactly.""
He turned the document toward us.
"Your mother owned a separate interest in one of the original development partnerships. The partnership still generates income.""
Dad stared.
"How much?""
Harold gave him the figure.
My father looked stunned.
Then Harold delivered the final revelation.
"Based on the current valuation, Malik's protected assets are worth considerably more than the family home.""
I couldn't speak.
Dad slowly looked at me.
And for the first time, I understood why Denise had been so desperate to remove me.
May you like
She hadn't just wanted my bedroom.
She had wanted my future.
