Chapter 8: The Secret My Father Carried
For a moment, I couldn't understand what Vanessa had said.
I looked at Dad.
He stood beside the workbench, holding the paper in both hands.
His expression was unreadable.
"Tell her you're lying," I whispered.
Dad didn't move.
"Tell me she's lying!""
His eyes closed.
And that was when I knew.
There was something he had never told me.
Something he had carried for three years.
Something that had slowly turned him into the man who had allowed Vanessa to control our home.
"Dad?""
He lowered the paper.
"I wasn't driving the car that crashed.""
Vanessa let out a shaky breath.
"But you were there.""
Dad looked at her.
"Yes.""
I stumbled backward.
"You were there?""
He nodded.
I couldn't breathe.
"You told me Mom was driving.""
"I know.""
"You told me a truck hit her.""
"I know.""
"You told me you weren't there!""
His face crumpled.
"I know, Emily.""
I stared at him, waiting for him to explain.
But he looked as though he were struggling to find the words.
Finally, he sat down on the old wooden chair beside the workbench.
"Your mother and I had an argument that afternoon.""
I shook my head.
"About what?""
"The foundation. She had discovered irregularities in the accounts. I didn't know Daniel was stealing money, but I had signed some documents without reading them carefully.""
He pressed his palms together.
"Your mother was furious. She believed I had been careless with the money entrusted to us.""
"Was she right?""
"Yes.""
His voice cracked.
"I had trusted Daniel for years. I thought he was honest. I wanted to believe the payments were legitimate.""
He looked at the photograph.
"Your mother told me she was going to meet a lawyer. I asked her to wait until we could discuss everything together. She refused.""
"Then what happened?""
"I followed her.""
The words seemed to drain all the warmth from the room.
Dad continued.
"I drove behind her for several miles. I wanted to convince her not to involve the police until I could understand what had happened.""
"Why didn't you just call her?""
"I did. She wouldn't answer.""
He looked at me.
"Emily, I was afraid that if the foundation collapsed, innocent families would lose their support. I was afraid people would think I'd helped Daniel steal the money. And I was afraid your mother would never forgive me.""
"So you chased her?""
"No. I followed her. But I never caught up to her.""
Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.
"That's not what happened.""
Dad turned toward her.
"Be quiet.""
"You were driving behind her when Daniel forced her off the road. You saw the whole thing.""
"I saw the crash.""
"And you left.""
Dad's face went pale.
I stared at him.
"You left Mom?""
He shook his head violently.
"No. I went to get help.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
He looked down at his hands.
"Because I was ashamed.""
The word hung between us.
Dad took a shaky breath.
"When I reached the crash site, your mother's car had gone off the road. Daniel was there. You were crying in the back seat. Your mother was unconscious.""
I felt tears gathering in my eyes.
"I remember the rain.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
"What happened next?""
"I tried to get to her. Daniel pulled you out first. I called emergency services, then went back to the car. But by the time I reached your mother, she wasn't breathing.""
Dad covered his face.
"I held her hand until the paramedics arrived.""
I could barely stand.
"Then why did you lie?""
He lowered his hands.
"Because Daniel told me the police would investigate the foundation. He said the money transfers made me look guilty. He convinced me that if I admitted I had followed your mother, everyone would believe I'd caused the accident.""
"Did you?""
"No!""
His voice rang through the studio.
"No, Emily. I didn't cause the crash. I never touched her car. I never wanted her hurt.""
I stared at him.
"Then why did you let Daniel control the story?""
"Because he told me he had evidence that I had authorized the stolen transfers. He said he would make sure I lost everything, including you.""
Dad's eyes filled with tears.
"I had already lost your mother. I couldn't bear the thought of losing you, too.""
I wiped my cheeks.
"So you let me believe she died in an ordinary accident.""
"Yes.""
"And you married Vanessa without knowing she had been involved?""
He nodded.
"She came to me after the investigation. She said she wanted to help me rebuild my life. She told me she had known your mother through the foundation, but she claimed she'd left before the financial problems began.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"I did leave.""
Dad turned on her.
"You stayed with Daniel.""
"Because he threatened me!""
"And you never told me?""
"I thought I could keep it hidden.""
Dad stared at her in disgust.
"You married me knowing what happened to my wife.""
Vanessa began to cry again.
"I loved you.""
"No. You loved the security I gave you.""
She shook her head.
"That's not true.""
"Then why did you steal from me?""
"I was trying to survive!""
"You had a home. You had money. You had everything you asked for.""
"And it was never enough!""
The outburst startled all of us.
Vanessa wiped her face with the heel of her hand.
"Eleanor had everything. The foundation, the respect, the perfect marriage, the beautiful daughter. Everyone thought she was wonderful.""
I stared at her.
"So you wanted to become her.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"I wanted what she had.""
"And you were willing to destroy my family to get it?""
She didn't answer.
Dad stood.
"That's enough.""
He turned to me.
"Emily, there's something else you need to know.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What?""
"After the accident, Daniel told me he had recovered your mother's notebook. He said there was no evidence of wrongdoing beyond the transfers I had approved.""
Dad looked at the blue box.
"But your mother had made copies. She must have hidden them here.""
I glanced at the papers.
"Why didn't Daniel destroy the box?""
"Perhaps he didn't know it existed.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"He knew.""
Dad turned toward her.
"What?""
"He knew Eleanor had hidden documents somewhere. That's why he kept asking me whether I had found them.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't know where they were!""
She looked at the box.
"I thought she had taken everything to the lawyer.""
I returned to the notebook and examined the pages more carefully.
Near the back, I found a list of account numbers, dates, and names. Beside several entries, my mother had written the words authorized by Daniel.
One page contained a handwritten note.
If anything happens to me, check the insurance beneficiary.
I looked at Dad.
"What insurance beneficiary?""
He frowned.
"Your mother had a life insurance policy. I was the beneficiary.""
"Was anyone else?""
He shook his head.
"Not that I know of.""
I found the insurance report again and turned to the final page.
There was a section listing the policy information.
The original beneficiary was Robert Carter.
But beneath it, a handwritten amendment had been attached.
The beneficiary had been changed two weeks before my mother's death.
I read the name aloud.
"Vanessa Brooks.""
Dad stared at the page.
Vanessa took a step backward.
"No.""
I looked at her.
"Your name is on the policy.""
She shook her head.
"That isn't possible.""
Dad snatched the document from my hands.
"Did you change the beneficiary?""
"No!""
"Did you sign this?""
"I never saw that document!""
He studied the signature.
It looked like Vanessa's.
But there was something strange about the date. The amendment had been filed three days after my mother died, despite being marked as effective before the accident.
I pointed it out.
"Dad, look. This was filed afterward.""
He read the date again.
His expression changed.
"Someone altered the paperwork.""
Vanessa looked as though she might collapse.
"Daniel did it.""
Dad turned toward her.
"How do you know?""
"Because he told me he could make sure I was protected if anything happened to Eleanor.""
I felt sick.
"You knew about the policy.""
"I knew he was handling some documents. I didn't know he had changed the beneficiary.""
"Did you receive the money?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she nodded.
Dad stared at her.
"How much?""
"Four hundred thousand dollars.""
He closed his eyes.
The room seemed to grow colder.
For three years, Vanessa had lived in our house, worn my mother's jewelry, and told my father that she wanted nothing more than to make our family whole.
All the while, she had been receiving money connected to my mother's death.
Dad reached for his phone.
"I'm telling the police everything.""
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
"Robert, please. I can explain.""
He pulled away.
"No more explanations.""
Then a sharp knock sounded at the studio door.
All three of us turned.
A man's voice called from outside.
"Robert Carter?""
Dad stepped toward the door.
"Who is it?""
"Daniel Brooks. I believe you have something that belongs to me.""
Vanessa made a small, terrified sound.
I looked at Dad.
He looked at the door.
May you like
Then Daniel spoke again.
"And before you call the police, you should know that I have the original recording of your wife explaining why she wanted you dead.""
