Chapter 8: The General Who Never Left

General Thomas Reed had attended my sister’s wedding wearing a perfectly tailored suit.

He had hugged my father.

Complimented Vanessa’s dress.

Smiled for photographs.

And watched our family collapse.

Now I knew why.

He wasn’t a guest.

He was a reminder.

A warning.

I found him two days later at an old military memorial outside the city.

He was standing in front of a wall of names.

Including Daniel Black’s.

“You always were persistent,” Reed said without turning around.

I stopped several feet away.

“You called me.””

“I did.””

“Why?””

He looked at Daniel’s name.

“Because I wanted to give you a chance to walk away.””

I almost laughed.

“You threatened me.””

“No.””

He turned.

“I warned you.””

His calmness bothered me.

People who were afraid usually showed it.

Reed didn’t.

He looked like a man who had survived too many battles.

“Did you kill Daniel?””

The question hung between us.

His expression didn’t change.

“No.””

“Did you help cover it up?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

At least he admitted it.

“Why?””

He looked around the memorial.

“Because your grandfather believed sacrifices were necessary.””

“My grandfather murdered people.””

“He made decisions.””

“People died.””

“Yes.””

His answer was cold.

I felt anger rising.

“How can you say that?””

“Because I watched countries collapse because one person hesitated.””

I stepped closer.

“And Daniel?””

His face changed slightly.

“He was different.””

“How?””

“He still believed people mattered.””

For the first time, Reed sounded almost human.

“Your grandfather hated that about him.””

I stared at him.

“So what happened?””

Reed looked away.

“Daniel found evidence.””

“The evidence of corruption.””

“Yes.””

“And my father helped him.””

“Yes.””

“Then who betrayed them?””

Reed was silent.

That silence told me everything.

“You know.””

He looked at me.

“I know who gave the order.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

Instead, he asked:

“Do you really want to know?””

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“Because once you know, there is no going back.””

I thought about Vanessa.

About my mother.

About my father sitting alone in his study.

About all the years stolen by lies.

“I’m already there.””

Reed reached into his coat.

He handed me an envelope.

“This was Daniel’s final report.””

I opened it.

The pages were old.

The ink was faded.

But one sentence stood out.

The operation was compromised from inside the Carter family.

I looked at Reed.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“Why hide it?””

“Because your grandfather had power.””

“And now?””

Reed looked at me.

“Now he’s dead.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

His silence was the answer.

I flipped through the pages.

Near the end was another name.

Not my grandfather.

Not my father.

Someone else.

Someone unexpected.

My hands froze.

Because the signature belonged to my mother.

I looked up.

“Why is my mother’s name here?””

Reed’s face changed.

And for the first time, I saw fear.

“Because she was the one person your grandfather never controlled.””

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

“How?””

He looked toward the road.

May you like

Then quietly said:

“Ask your mother why she really married Richard Carter.””
