Chapter 5: The Woman at the Door

“Lauren, you were never supposed to be pregnant with that baby.””

The words hung in the doorway.

Marissa Vale stood beneath the porch light with rain glistening on the shoulders of her black coat. She looked nothing like the polished woman from the clinic website. Her hair was damp.

Her mascara had smudged beneath one eye. In her right hand, she held a thin leather folder.

Mark stared at her.

“How do you know my wife?””

Marissa looked past him.

At me.

“Because your family has been lying to you for years.””

Evelyn rushed forward.

“Marissa, leave.””

Marissa's eyes snapped toward her.

“You've already done enough.””

Chloe backed away from the doorway.

“Mom?””

Marissa stepped inside.

Mark blocked her path.

“Stop.””

She raised both hands.

“I didn't come here to hurt anyone.””

“Then start talking.””

Marissa looked at the scattered cake decorations, the overturned chair, and the smear of frosting still on the hardwood.

Then she looked at my swollen cheek.

Her expression hardened.

“She slapped you?””

I didn't answer.

Evelyn did.

“It was an emotional moment.””

Marissa gave a humorless laugh.

“Of course it was.””

Mark closed the door.

“Everyone sits down.””

Nobody argued.

Even Evelyn.

We gathered around the dining room table like strangers waiting for a verdict.

Marissa placed the leather folder in front of Mark.

“I should have come months ago.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of my mother?””

“Of what your mother knew.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“You promised.””

Marissa flinched.

“I promised to help you with the paperwork.””

“You promised silence.””

“And you promised nobody would be harmed.””

I felt my heart pound.

Mark looked between them.

“What paperwork?””

Marissa opened the folder.

Inside were copies of medical forms, correspondence, payment receipts, and photographs.

The first photograph showed Daniel Hayes.

My father-in-law.

He was standing in front of the same fertility clinic.

But he wasn't sick.

He wasn't in a wheelchair.

He was wearing a dark suit.

And he was holding a tiny baby.

The same baby from the website photograph.

Mark picked it up.

“Who is this?””

Marissa whispered, “Your father's child.””

Nobody moved.

Chloe stared.

“What?””

Mark looked up sharply.

“Dad had another child?””

“Yes.””

“With who?””

Marissa's eyes shifted toward Evelyn.

“With me.””

The room erupted.

Chloe stood so quickly her chair scraped backward.

“You're lying.””

Marissa shook her head.

“I wish I were.””

Evelyn slammed both hands onto the table.

“Enough.””

Mark didn't look away from Marissa.

“You and my father?””

“Yes.””

“While he was married to my mother?””

“Yes.””

Evelyn's face twisted.

“He was sick.””

Marissa's voice broke.

“He was lonely.””

“He had a family!””

“And he had secrets.””

Mark pushed the photograph across the table.

“Why didn't anyone know?””

“Because Daniel paid to keep it quiet.””

“Paid who?””

“The clinic.””

I felt numb.

Marissa continued.

“Six years ago, Daniel came to us with one request. He wanted to make sure his biological child would be protected.””

Mark's brows drew together.

“What biological child?””

Marissa looked at Chloe.

Then at me.

“Your family knows.””

Evelyn whispered, “No.””

Marissa turned to her.

“You know exactly what I'm talking about.””

Chloe looked at her mother.

“Mom?””

Evelyn's lips trembled.

Marissa reached into the folder and pulled out another document.

“Her name is Ava.””

Mark stared at the page.

There was a birth certificate.

Ava Vale-Hayes.

Birth mother: Marissa Vale.

Father: Daniel Edward Hayes.

Date of birth: six years and eight months earlier.

Mark's face went blank.

“Dad died six years ago.””

“Yes.””

“But this child…”

“She was already born.””

“Where is she?””

Marissa's eyes filled with tears.

“With me.””

The silence that followed felt enormous.

Chloe slowly sat down.

“Why are you telling us this now?””

“Because your mother crossed the line.””

Evelyn whispered, “I did what I had to do.””

“You forged Lauren's signature.””

“It was temporary.””

“You stole her medical records.””

“I had permission.””

“No, you didn't.””

“You said the clinic could handle it.””

“I said the clinic could process a legitimate surrogacy arrangement. I never agreed to fraudulent consent.””

Mark slammed his palm on the table.

“Get to the point.””

Marissa nodded.

“Your mother didn't just want Lauren to be a surrogate.””

She looked at me.

“She wanted the hospital to alter the delivery records.””

My stomach turned.

Mark's expression became cold.

“How?””

“Under the original plan, Lauren would give birth to her own child. Chloe's embryo would never have been involved.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She didn't deny it.

Marissa continued.

“Your mother intended to create the appearance of a neonatal mix-up.””

Chloe whispered, “That's what she meant.””

“Meaning?”” Mark asked.

“She wanted the hospital records to show that Lauren gave birth to a baby that belonged to Chloe and David.””

Mark stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“It doesn't have to make biological sense. It only has to look legitimate on paper.””

I felt sick.

“You were going to switch our baby's identity.””

Marissa looked directly at me.

“Yes.””

My chair scraped backward.

Mark caught my arm.

“Easy.””

I shook my head.

“No. I need to know.””

Marissa nodded.

“The plan depended on one thing.””

“What?””

“A different birth certificate.””

My hands began trembling.

“And the signature you saw tonight?””

Marissa opened another file.

“The same handwriting was used on three documents.””

She laid them out.

One was supposedly signed by me.

One by Daniel.

One by Mark.

Mark's face tightened.

“I never signed this.””

“I know.””

He stared at his forged signature.

“Who did?””

Marissa hesitated.

“Someone who had access to your old legal documents.””

All eyes moved toward Evelyn.

She closed her eyes.

“I never touched them.””

Marissa's voice was quiet.

“You gave them to me.””

Evelyn's eyes flew open.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You're lying.””

Marissa pulled out a receipt.

“Six years ago, Evelyn Hayes delivered copies of Daniel's signature cards, Mark's driver's license, and Lauren's medical records to my office.””

Mark read the date.

His expression changed.

“That was three days after Dad died.””

“I know.””

“You knew he was dead when you made this arrangement?””

Evelyn whispered, “I had to finish what he started.””

Mark stood.

“What did Dad start?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father wanted Chloe to have a family.””

“No.””

Mark's voice was low.

“You keep talking about Chloe.””

He pointed to the photograph.

“What does Ava have to do with it?””

Evelyn's face went pale.

Marissa answered.

“Everything.””

She turned the birth certificate around.

“Daniel's daughter was supposed to receive money from a trust.””

Mark frowned.

“What trust?””

“The Hayes Family Trust.””

“I know about the trust.””

“No,” Marissa said.

“You know about the public trust.””

She opened another document.

“This is the private amendment.””

Mark read it.

Then read it again.

I watched the color disappear from his face.

“What is it?””

He didn't answer.

Marissa did.

“Daniel changed his will before he died.””

“To what?””

“He left the majority of his private estate to Ava.””

Chloe whispered, “How much?””

Marissa looked down.

“Four-point-eight million dollars.””

Evelyn stood abruptly.

“That's not the whole story.””

Mark turned.

“Then tell me the whole story.””

Her breathing became ragged.

“Your father was going to leave us.””

Mark went still.

“What?””

“He was going to divorce me.””

The words were barely audible.

“Why?””

“Because of her.””

She pointed at Marissa.

“He was leaving me for her.””

Marissa shook her head.

“That isn't true.””

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“He told me himself.””

Mark stared at his mother.

“So you killed the trust?””

“No.””

“You hid Ava?””

“I protected this family.””

“You hid his daughter.””

“I protected you.””

“You forged my signature.””

“I was trying to stop everything from falling apart!””

Mark's voice broke.

“Mom, you already let it.””

Chloe began to cry again.

“I don't understand.””

Marissa looked at her.

“You were never supposed to use Lauren.””

Chloe wiped her cheeks.

“Then why did Mom tell me the embryo was connected to Lauren?””

“Because your mother needed you to believe it.””

“Why?””

Marissa looked at Evelyn.

“To get Chloe to agree to something else.””

Chloe stared.

“What?””

Evelyn said nothing.

Mark's eyes narrowed.

“Something else?””

Marissa nodded.

“The embryo Chloe believed was hers…”

She stopped.

I felt every hair on my arms rise.

“Wasn't?””

Marissa looked at me.

“No.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Chloe stood.

“What are you saying?””

“The embryo created for you was never transferred.””

Chloe's face drained of color.

“What?””

“The clinic records were altered.””

Mark stepped closer.

“Then whose embryo is it?””

Marissa's eyes lowered.

“I don't know who they implanted.””

My heart slammed against my ribs.

Mark grabbed the table.

“You don't know?””

“I know only that an embryo was moved between storage accounts six months ago.””

“Which accounts?””

“The Hayes account…”

She swallowed.

“And another account.””

“Whose?””

Marissa looked toward Evelyn.

Evelyn didn't speak.

Mark demanded, “Whose account?””

Marissa slowly removed one final paper from the folder.

At the top was a patient identification number.

Below it was a name.

Mark read it aloud.

“David Mercer.””

Chloe staggered backward.

“No.””

Marissa nodded.

“The embryo transfer scheduled tomorrow isn't for Lauren.””

She looked at Chloe.

“It was supposed to be for you.””

Chloe covered her mouth.

Then Marissa added,

“But six months ago, someone changed the genetic parent information on the embryo already stored under your husband's name.””

Mark looked down at the paperwork.

“What does it say now?””

Marissa hesitated.

“It says the embryo belongs to…”

Her eyes lifted.

“…Mark Hayes and Lauren Hayes.””

My breath stopped.

Mark stared at me.

I stared at him.

Neither of us spoke.

May you like

Then Evelyn whispered from across the table,

“Now you understand why you were never supposed to be pregnant with that baby.””
