Chapter 8: The Baby Who Was Never Supposed to Be Mine

The following morning, I received a court notice.

Megan had filed an emergency petition requesting sole control of the unborn baby's inheritance.

The petition also requested that the four existing children be placed under temporary family supervision until their mother's circumstances were resolved.

In plain English, she wanted to take them away from me.

Not because she was suddenly ready to raise them.

But because she wanted to control who had access to the money.

I read the petition twice at my kitchen table.

Ava sat across from me, quietly eating cereal.

"Is Mom coming home?"" she asked.

I folded the paper.

"I don't know, sweetheart.""

She nodded.

Then she pushed her bowl away.

"She used to sing to us.""

I looked at her.

"What song?""

"The one about the moon. She sang it when Ben was a baby.""

Ava's voice cracked.

"I don't remember all the words anymore.""

I reached across the table and held her hand.

"Then we'll remember together.""

Later that afternoon, Rebecca and I met with an attorney named Sarah Whitmore.

Sarah had been recommended by Margaret and specialized in family trust disputes.

She studied the documents carefully.

"The guardianship papers are suspicious," she said.

"But the most important issue is the trust's emergency protection clause.""

"Can it stop Thomas?""

"Potentially. But we need proof of attempted fraud.""

I placed the USB drive on the desk.

"My father left a recording.""

Sarah looked at it.

"Have you listened to it?""

"No.""

She connected it to her laptop.

The screen flickered.

Then my father's face appeared.

He was sitting in his old study, wearing the blue sweater I had given him for Christmas.

I stopped breathing.

His hair was thinner than I remembered.

His hands rested on the desk.

But his eyes were clear.

"Claire," he began.

"If you're watching this, Thomas has probably started interfering with the family trust.""

I covered my mouth.

"I wish I could explain everything to you in person. But there are things I need you to know.""

He paused.

"Your uncle believes the inheritance belongs to him. He believes your grandmother promised him control over the family assets. That promise was never made.""

He looked down at a sheet of paper.

"Years ago, Thomas tried to move money out of the trust. I stopped him. He blamed me for losing his position in the family business.""

My father's voice became quieter.

"He also tried to use Megan.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"She was young. She wanted his approval. He told her that I had stolen money from her. He told her she would receive nothing unless she helped him.""

My eyes filled.

"Your sister has been carrying that resentment for years. I tried to reach her. I tried to explain the truth. But she refused to listen.""

He took a breath.

"Claire, if Megan has another child, please don't assume that child is part of Thomas's plan. The baby deserves protection, regardless of what the adults have done.""

I looked at Sarah.

She was watching carefully.

My father continued.

"There is one more thing.""

He leaned toward the camera.

"Thomas is not the only person who has been lying.""

The recording crackled.

Then my father's face returned.

"Daniel Mercer is not Thomas's son.""

I froze.

"What?""

My father looked directly into the camera.

"Thomas adopted Daniel when he was a boy. Daniel's biological father was a man named Robert Hayes.""

I turned toward Sarah.

She stopped typing.

My father continued.

"Robert Hayes was the man who originally helped establish the trust. He disappeared before Daniel was born. Thomas raised the boy, but he never legally severed Daniel's connection to his biological family.""

My mind raced.

"Why does that matter?"" I whispered.

Sarah pointed to the screen.

My father explained.

"Daniel's biological father had another child. A daughter. Her name was Elizabeth Hayes.""

The same Elizabeth in Margaret's photograph.

My mother's younger sister.

My great-aunt's daughter.

The woman Megan had been contacting.

My father continued.

"Elizabeth's inheritance was transferred into the family trust after her death. Daniel has no right to claim it through Thomas. But he may be trying to establish a legal connection through the unborn baby.""

I felt sick.

Sarah leaned forward.

"That's significant.""

My father looked down again.

"Claire, the most important thing is this: the fifth child's inheritance is protected only if the child's biological parentage is correctly recorded.""

I stared at the screen.

My father paused.

Then he said something I would never forget.

"Do not allow anyone to change that baby's birth certificate.""

The recording ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Sarah finally spoke.

"Now we know why they're so desperate.""

I looked at her.

"Because Daniel wants the inheritance?""

"Because he believes the unborn child can be used to establish a claim to property that otherwise belongs to another branch of the family.""

I thought about Megan's emails.

The forged guardianship.

The proposed trust.

The school documents.

Everything was connected.

But there was still one question.

"Why would Megan help him?""

Sarah closed the laptop.

"Because she may believe she is securing the baby's future.""

I looked down.

"Or because he promised her money.""

Sarah didn't disagree.

That evening, Megan appeared at my front door.

I didn't open it immediately.

I watched her through the glass.

She looked tired.

Her hair was pulled into a messy ponytail, and her coat hung loosely around her shoulders.

She was visibly pregnant now.

When she saw me, she raised both hands.

"Claire, please.""

I opened the door but kept the chain secured.

"What do you want?""

"I want to see my children.""

"They're sleeping.""

"Then wake them.""

"No.""

Her eyes filled.

"You can't keep them from me.""

"I'm not keeping them from you. I'm protecting them.""

She looked past my shoulder.

"Where's Ava?""

"Safe.""

Megan pressed her palm against her stomach.

"Do you have any idea what it's like to be pregnant and alone?""

I stared at her.

"You left four children alone in an apartment.""

Her expression hardened.

"Because I knew you'd take care of them.""

"That's not an excuse.""

She lowered her voice.

"Claire, I need your help.""

I almost laughed.

"What kind?""

"Just sign the temporary trust authorization. Thomas will handle the money. I'll get the baby settled, and everything will go back to normal.""

"Normal?""

She nodded quickly.

"You keep the kids. I get the baby. Everyone gets what they want.""

I stared at her.

"You want to separate your newborn from his siblings?""

Her face changed.

"It's not like that.""

"Then what is it like?""

She looked down at her stomach.

For the first time, I saw something resembling fear.

"Daniel says the baby has to be registered under a different family name.""

My heart stopped.

"Why?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Megan, listen to me. That baby is your child. Nobody gets to decide who he belongs to except the law and the truth.""

Her eyes filled.

"Thomas says if I don't cooperate, I'll lose everything.""

I stared at her.

"Everything?""

"The money. The apartment. The children.""

I stepped closer.

"He's threatening you.""

She shook her head.

"You don't understand. He has documents.""

"What documents?""

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"A birth certificate.""

I felt cold.

"Whose?""

Megan looked directly at me.

"Yours.""

I stepped backward.

"What?""

She pulled a folded paper from her handbag.

It was an old hospital record.

My name was printed at the top.

My date of birth.

My mother's name.

And a handwritten note:

*Infant transferred to private family placement.*

I stared at it.

"That's impossible.""

Megan began crying.

"Claire, there's something Mom never told you.""

She pushed the document through the narrow opening in the door.

"You weren't the baby they brought home from the hospital.""

I couldn't breathe.

Megan continued.

"You were adopted.""

May you like

Then she said the sentence that destroyed everything I thought I knew.

"And the woman who gave birth to you was Elizabeth Hayes.""
