Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Camera

By noon, the bridal suite had become a crime scene of sorts.

The officer photographed the damaged gown, the adhesive tube, and the floor around the chair where I'd been sitting. A technician arrived to secure the camera footage, while Eleanor spoke with the insurance representative outside.

Daniel remained beside me.

He hadn't once suggested that I forgive Vanessa.

He hadn't asked whether we could keep the incident quiet.

He'd simply held my hand while strangers documented the destruction of the dress I'd expected to wear when I married him.

That alone made me feel more protected than I had in my childhood home.

But the photograph on my phone wouldn't leave my mind.

My father in the hospital.

My mother beside him.

Vanessa holding a document.

And a message suggesting that the dress had somehow become part of a much larger plan.

“Do you think the person who sent this is involved?”” Daniel asked.

“I think they know something.””

“Could it be Vanessa?””

“No. She'd have sent a message designed to frighten me, not one that directs me toward evidence.””

He considered that.

“Then someone wants you to investigate.””

“Or someone wants me to accuse the wrong person.””

Mr. Hale returned from the hallway.

“The camera recording has been preserved,” he said.

“The officer has also documented the original system settings and confirmed that the footage wasn't edited before preservation.””

“Can we watch it?”” I asked.

“Yes, though the recording of the incident is straightforward. We have footage of Vanessa entering with the tube, approaching you, squeezing the adhesive onto the gown, and making the remarks you described.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“There's no ambiguity?””

“Not about the physical act. Her intent and the legal consequences will be matters for the investigation.””

I nodded.

“Play it.””

Mr. Hale hesitated.

“Are you certain?””

“Yes.””

He opened a secure copy on his laptop.

The video showed the room from above the door.

I watched myself standing near the mirror, smiling nervously while Jessica adjusted the train of my gown.

Then Vanessa entered.

She looked around the room.

She checked the hallway.

She took the adhesive tube from her handbag.

And before she approached me, she glanced directly at the camera.

My stomach tightened.

She knew it was there.

Or at least, she suspected it.

On the recording, she moved behind me while I was distracted by a message from Daniel. Her hand rose into view.

The clear adhesive streamed down the bodice.

I jerked backward.

Vanessa laughed.

Even without sound, her expression was unmistakable.

She looked pleased.

Then she leaned closer and said something I couldn't hear in the silent playback.

“Can we increase the volume?”” I asked.

Mr. Hale adjusted the settings.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

“Consider this character building, Claire.””

Jessica swore under her breath.

The recording continued.

Vanessa pointed toward the dress.

“You can always buy another one.””

Then she looked toward the camera again.

She raised one finger, smiled, and mouthed something.

Mr. Hale paused the video.

“Did anyone see that?””

“See what?”” Daniel asked.

Mr. Hale rewound the footage.

Vanessa's lips moved.

He slowed the playback.

The words became clearer.

Good luck proving anything.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“She knew.””

“Maybe,” Mr. Hale said.

“But that still doesn't explain why she'd deliberately act in front of a camera.””

“Because she thought the damage wouldn't matter,” I said.

“She assumed I'd protect her like I always do.””

The truth settled over the room.

Vanessa had never needed to hide what she did.

She'd only needed to make me afraid of the consequences of exposing her.

I asked Mr. Hale to send the relevant footage to the investigator handling the financial records, subject to the proper procedures.

Then I turned to my mother.

She'd been sitting in the adjoining room for nearly an hour, refusing to speak unless someone asked her a direct question.

“Mom, I need you to tell me what happened in the hospital.””

Her eyes filled immediately.

“Your father was dying.””

“I know.””

“He wasn't himself.””

“His doctors said he was.””

“He was frightened, Claire. He didn't want the family to fall apart.””

I pulled out the photograph.

“Then why was Vanessa holding a document over his hospital bed?””

Mother stared at the screen.

For a second, something like recognition crossed her face.

Then she looked away.

“I don't know.””

“You recognize the room.””

“Of course I do. I was there.””

“Do you recognize the document?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Mr. Hale folded his hands.

“Patricia, this is important. If you have information about a disputed financial authorization, now is the time to provide it.””

Mother shook her head.

“I never took anything from Claire.””

“I didn't ask whether you took anything.””

Her mouth opened, then closed.

I watched her fingers twist together in her lap.

“Mom, did Dad change his trust before he died?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to make sure you would be safe.””

“Safe from Vanessa?””

Mother looked at me.

Her silence answered the question.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father made me promise.””

“To keep what secret?””

She pressed her palms against her knees.

“He believed Vanessa was getting into trouble. Financial trouble. He said she'd borrowed money she couldn't repay.””

“How much?””

“I don't know.””

“Did he know about the transfers?””

Mother looked down.

“I think so.””

“And the signature?””

Her face crumpled.

“Claire, please.””

I leaned forward.

“Did you watch Vanessa forge my name?””

“No.””

“Did you help her?””

“No!””

The force of her answer surprised us both.

For a moment, she seemed genuinely offended.

Then her shoulders sagged.

“I signed something,” she whispered.

Mr. Hale sat straighter.

“What did you sign?””

“A statement. Vanessa told me it was a routine confirmation for the bank. She said your father had authorized the transfer.””

“Did you read it?””

Mother didn't answer.

“Mom.””

“I thought I was helping your father settle his affairs.””

“You signed a statement you didn't understand?””

“He was dying!”” she cried.

“Your sister was panicking. The business was struggling. Everyone was asking for money, and I didn't know what to do.””

Daniel stood.

“Then why didn't you tell Claire?””

Mother looked at him with wet eyes.

“Because I knew she'd ask questions. And I was afraid of what those questions would uncover.””

That was the first honest thing she'd said all morning.

Before I could respond, Mr. Hale's phone rang.

He listened, asked several questions, and then looked at me.

“The investigator has found a connection between the company listed on the transfer authorization and an account associated with Vanessa.””

“How much money?””

“That's still being verified.””

“Is it enough to explain the missing funds?””

He didn't answer immediately.

“Possibly.””

My phone buzzed again.

The unknown sender had replied.

*Your mother isn't the person who changed the document. Check the original signature card at the bank. The one with your father's handwriting.*

I showed Mr. Hale.

He read it twice.

“Whoever this is appears to have access to information that hasn't been made public.””

“Can we trace the number?””

“We can preserve the message and provide the information to the appropriate investigators. We shouldn't assume we can identify the sender from the number alone.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Then I want the original bank records.””

Mr. Hale nodded.

“I'll make the request.””

My mother stood abruptly.

“I can't do this anymore.””

She grabbed her handbag.

“Where are you going?”” I asked.

“Home.””

“You're leaving?””

“I need time to think.””

“You've had eight months, Mom. Maybe longer.””

She flinched.

For one moment, I almost apologized.

The reflex was automatic. A lifetime of smoothing things over, of making my pain smaller so someone else could remain comfortable.

Then I remembered the ruined gown.

The forged signature.

My father's final days.

“Don't contact Vanessa about this investigation,” I said.

“Don't warn her. Don't delete anything.””

Mother stared at me as if she didn't recognize her own daughter.

“You would do this to your sister?””

“No,” I replied.

“She did this to herself.””

She left without another word.

Daniel watched the door close.

“Are you all right?””

“No.””

He nodded.

“That's fair.””

He didn't tell me to be strong.

He didn't tell me everything happened for a reason.

He simply pulled a chair beside mine and waited until I was ready to speak again.

For several minutes, neither of us said anything.

Then Jessica appeared in the doorway, holding a garment bag.

“I may have a solution to the dress problem,” she announced.

I looked up.

“Jessica, I love you, but unless you've secretly become a couture designer—”

“I haven't. But Eleanor has a backup plan.””

She unzipped the bag.

Inside was an elegant ivory gown with a structured bodice, long sleeves, and a flowing skirt that shimmered softly beneath the light.

It wasn't the dress I'd planned to wear.

It was simpler.

Stronger.

Beautiful in a way that didn't need to announce its price.

“Eleanor says it belongs to the foundation,” Jessica explained.

“It's a preserved archival piece, and she has permission to loan it for the ceremony if the specialist clears it for use.””

I touched the fabric.

“Is it insured?””

Jessica smiled faintly.

“Of course it is.””

For the first time that day, I laughed.

Daniel kissed my forehead.

“We can still get married, Claire.””

I looked at the gown.

Then at the security footage frozen on Mr. Hale's laptop.

“Yes,” I said.

“We can.””

But as Jessica helped me out of the damaged dress, another message appeared.

This one contained no photograph.

Just a name.

*Ask Daniel's father why he stopped doing business with Vanessa six months before your engagement.*

I looked at Daniel.

May you like

His expression changed the moment he read it.

“Claire,” he said quietly, “there's something I haven't told you about my father.””
