Chapter 6: The Message My Wife Never Sent

The screenshot on my phone made my entire body go still.

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The conversation was real.

The names were real.

The timestamps were real.

*Vanessa Carter.*

*Clara Evans.*

And beneath them were messages that looked like they had been pulled directly from their phones.

I stared at the screen.

Then at my wife.

Then back at the screen.

Clara saw my expression.

“Evan…”

I held up my hand.

Not because I was angry.

Because I needed a second.

I needed one second where the world stopped moving.

The screenshot showed a conversation from the day before the dinner.

Vanessa:

*You need to talk some sense into him.*

Clara:

*I don’t understand what you mean.*

Vanessa:

*He’s going too far. He thinks canceling the trip makes him some kind of hero.*

Clara:

*I don’t want to be involved in this.*

Vanessa:

*You already are.*

Then the final message.

The one that made my heart drop.

Clara:

*I’ll think about what I can do.*

I looked up.

“Did you write this?””

Clara didn’t answer immediately.

That was the worst part.

Not because silence meant guilt.

Because I knew Clara.

She was searching for the right words.

And that meant there was a story behind it.

“Evan,” she whispered.

“Did you?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

I sat down slowly.

Clara stood in front of me.

“I need you to listen before you decide what this means.””

I looked at her.

“Okay.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Calm.

Too calm.

She sat across from me.

“When Vanessa messaged me yesterday afternoon, I didn’t know what she wanted.””

I frowned.

“Why would she message you?””

“Because she knew you weren’t answering her.””

Of course.

“When I opened the message, she was angry.””

Clara looked down at her hands.

“She said you were ruining everything.””

I said nothing.

“She said your parents were heartbroken. She said everyone was blaming me.””

My jaw tightened.

“Did you believe her?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

That surprised me.

“Then why respond?””

“Because I thought I could stop things from getting worse.””

I leaned back.

“By talking to Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“I know how she is.””

I almost smiled.

“You do?””

Clara nodded sadly.

“I’ve known since the first year we got married.””

That hurt.

Because I knew Clara had suffered.

But hearing her say it out loud made it real.

“She told me if I cared about you, I would convince you not to cancel the trip.””

I looked at the phone again.

“And you said you’d think about what you could do.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Clara’s eyes filled.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I stared at her.

“Protect me?””

She nodded.

“I knew you were angry. I knew you wanted to cut them off. But I also knew how much your parents meant to you.””

I looked away.

“That was before.””

“I know.””

Her voice softened.

“But I didn’t know what you knew. I didn’t know Vanessa was trying to steal anything. I thought she was just being selfish and emotional.””

I looked at the screenshot.

“So you talked to her.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“And I told her I would not force you to change your mind.””

That caught my attention.

“What?””

Clara reached for her phone.

She opened her messages.

“Look.””

She handed it to me.

The conversation was there.

The real one.

The first screenshot had been edited.

Not obviously.

Not enough for someone who didn’t know.

But enough.

Vanessa’s messages were real.

Clara’s were not.

Someone had removed the rest of the conversation.

I scrolled.

Vanessa:

*You need to make him understand family comes first.*

Clara:

*Family should not mean allowing someone to hurt you.*

My chest tightened.

Next message.

Vanessa:

*You’re making this worse.*

Clara:

*No, Vanessa. You made it worse when you threw water at me.*

Another.

Vanessa:

*You think you’re better than us now?*

Clara:

*No. I think I deserve respect.*

Then the final message.

The real one.

Clara:

*I will never ask Evan to choose between people. But I will not stand by while someone treats him or our baby this way.*

I looked up.

Clara was crying quietly.

“I never wanted you to see that screenshot and think I betrayed you.””

I felt something heavy in my chest.

Not anger.

Guilt.

Because for a moment, I had believed my father.

I had allowed them to put doubt between us.

I reached for her hand.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She wiped her cheek.

“Because I thought it would make you more upset.””

“Clara.””

“I thought you would call Vanessa immediately. I thought it would become another fight.””

She looked at me.

“And I was tired.””

That word broke something in me.

Tired.

She was seven months pregnant.

She was in pain.

She was dealing with my family’s cruelty.

And instead of making herself the center of the problem, she was still trying to protect everyone.

I moved closer.

“I’m sorry.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I held her hand.

“I should have trusted you first.””

She looked at me.

“You did.””

“No.””

I pointed at the phone.

“For a few seconds, I didn’t.””

She squeezed my hand.

“But then you asked.””

“Because I knew you.””

She smiled faintly.

“And that’s why I knew you would understand.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I almost ignored it.

But Clara looked at me.

“Answer.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I want to hear what she says.””

I answered and put it on speaker.

Immediately, Vanessa spoke.

“Did you get my message?””

I looked at Clara.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

Her tone was confident.

Too confident.

“Then you know Clara contacted me.””

I said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“She’s probably pretending she was innocent.””

Clara looked away.

I felt anger rising.

“Vanessa.””

“What?””

“Why did you send me an edited screenshot?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“What are you talking about?””

“You removed parts of the conversation.””

“I didn’t.””

“I have the original.””

Another pause.

Her voice changed.

Not guilty.

Angry.

“You went through her phone?””

“No.””

I looked at Clara.

“She showed me.””

Vanessa laughed.

A cold laugh.

“Of course she did.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she’s good at making herself look like the victim.””

Clara closed her eyes.

I felt my patience disappear.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“Then explain it.””

“You’re throwing away your family for someone who came into our lives and changed everything.””

I stared at the phone.

There it was.

The real belief.

Not about the vacation.

Not about the chair.

Not even about the dinner.

Vanessa believed Clara had stolen me.

“You know what your problem is?”” Vanessa continued.

“You think because you have money, you can control everyone.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re saying that?””

“Yes.””

“You tried to access my accounts.””

“That’s not true.””

“You tried to restore my reservations.””

“I was fixing a mistake.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa went silent.

Then she said:

“You heard me.””

“You think canceling my gift to my parents was a mistake?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her answer came instantly.

“Because everyone was supposed to go.””

I felt the room become cold.

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

“Who is everyone?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I already knew.

She had planned it.

The entire thing.

My family vacation.

My money.

My generosity.

None of it belonged to me anymore.

At least not in their minds.

Then Vanessa said something that changed everything.

“You should ask your father why he never told you about the investment.””

I frowned.

“What investment?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa laughed softly.

“Oh.””

A pause.

“You really don’t know.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Know what?””

She lowered her voice.

“Your parents weren’t just waiting for a vacation.””

“What are you talking about?””

“They were planning something with your money.””

I looked at Clara.

She looked back at me.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, we both realized the same thing.

The vacation was only the surface.

There was something much bigger underneath.

“Vanessa,” I said.

“What?””

“What investment?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she whispered:

“Ask your father where the rest of your money went.””

Then she hung up.

I sat there staring at my phone.

My family had already taken my trust.

My generosity.

My forgiveness.

But now I had one question burning in my mind.

What had they done with the money they already received?

May you like

Because if Vanessa was telling the truth…

The $150,000 vacation wasn’t the first thing my family had taken from me.
