Chapter 4: What Rachel Knew

The next morning, Malcolm came home.

He walked through my front door looking ten years older than when he left.

His suitcase hit the floor.

Then he saw Isaiah asleep on the couch.

He stopped.

For several seconds, he just stared.

Isaiah had fallen asleep with one of the new notebooks I'd bought him pressed against his chest.

His old backpack sat beside him.

Malcolm crouched.

He touched his son's hair.

Isaiah opened his eyes.

“Dad?””

“Hey, buddy.””

Isaiah sat up so quickly the notebook fell.

“You came.””

“I told you I would.””

“You brought my school stuff?””

Malcolm smiled through wet eyes.

“I brought enough to fill your whole room.””

Isaiah threw his arms around him.

I looked away.

Some moments deserved privacy.

Then Malcolm whispered something into his son's ear.

Isaiah pulled back.

“What?””

“I said I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not knowing.””

Isaiah shook his head.

“You didn't know.””

Malcolm closed his eyes.

That sentence hurt him more than any accusation could have.

Later, after Isaiah went upstairs, Malcolm and I sat at the kitchen table.

I placed the envelope between us.

“Open it.””

He stared at it.

“I can't.””

“You're his father.””

“I promised Rachel.””

“She wanted Isaiah to have it.””

“When he turns ten.””

“He's nine.””

“Then we wait.””

I understood.

Barely.

But I understood.

“What about the custody agreement?””

Malcolm rubbed his face.

“I called the law firm.””

“And?””

“They have no record of me signing anything.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“They said the document was filed by someone acting on behalf of Isaiah.””

“Who?””

“They wouldn't tell me over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Confidentiality.””

I pushed the bank statements toward him.

“This is no longer just about money.””

“I know.””

“What was Tasha doing with Rachel's insurance?””

“I don't know.””

“Why would she pay a law firm?””

“I don't know.””

He looked at the envelope.

“But Rachel knew something.””

We sat quietly.

Then I heard footsteps.

Isaiah came downstairs.

“Dad?””

Malcolm straightened.

“Yeah?””

“Can I ask you something?””

“Anything.””

“Why did Mom say my real mom didn't want me?””

Malcolm went completely still.

I felt my heart stop.

“What?””

Isaiah's eyes were fixed on the floor.

“She told me Rachel left because she didn't want to be my mom.””

Malcolm stood so quickly his chair scraped the tile.

“She said what?””

Isaiah flinched.

I touched Malcolm's arm.

“Don't scare him.””

Malcolm knelt.

“Buddy, listen to me.””

Isaiah looked at him.

“Your mom loved you.””

“Then why did she leave?””

“She didn't leave you.””

“But Mom said—”

“She died.””

Isaiah's face crumpled.

“I know.””

“No,” Malcolm said gently.

“I mean she died. She didn't choose to leave.””

Isaiah began crying.

“Did she love me?””

Malcolm pulled him close.

“More than anything.””

I watched them.

And something inside me shifted.

This wasn't just financial abuse.

Tasha had been rewriting a dead woman's memory for a child who couldn't defend it.

I couldn't forgive that.

That afternoon, Malcolm drove back to Tasha's house.

I went with him.

He didn't want me to.

I went anyway.

Tasha opened the door.

When she saw Malcolm, her face changed.

“You're home.””

“Where are Isaiah's records?””

“What?””

“His school records.””

“Why?””

“Because I want them.””

She crossed her arms.

“You don't trust me now?””

“No.””

The word landed hard.

Tasha stared at him.

“You believe your mother?””

“I believe the bank.””

Her face reddened.

“You've been spying on me?””

“You took money meant for our son.””

“I didn't.””

“Then explain the transfers.””

“I can't.””

“Exactly.””

She looked at me.

“This is what you wanted.””

I shook my head.

“No. I wanted Isaiah to have pencils.””

Malcolm stepped inside.

“Tasha, where is the custody agreement?””

She froze.

“What agreement?””

“The one filed after Rachel died.””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“You paid a law firm.””

Her eyes flicked toward the stairs.

A tiny movement.

But I saw it.

“So there is something.””

She backed away.

“You need to leave.””

Malcolm said, “Not until you answer me.””

“I don't owe you an explanation.””

“You owe Isaiah one.””

Her voice suddenly became cold.

“You don't know what Rachel was like.””

Malcolm stared at her.

“Tell me.””

“She wasn't stable.””

“Prove it.””

“She threatened to take Isaiah away.””

“From who?””

“From everyone.””

“That doesn't explain the money.””

Tasha looked at me.

“She knew.””

My pulse quickened.

“Knew what?””

She said nothing.

Malcolm grabbed the envelope from my hand.

“Tasha, what did Rachel know?””

Tasha's eyes locked on the envelope.

“You opened it?””

“No.””

“Then don't.””

“Why?””

“Because once you do, everything changes.””

I stepped forward.

“Everything already changed.””

Tasha looked toward the staircase again.

Then she whispered, “Ask Malcolm what happened the night Rachel died.””

I looked at my son.

He went pale.

I had never seen that expression on his face.

“What does she mean?”” I asked.

Malcolm didn't answer.

“Tasha,” I said, “what happened that night?””

She shook her head.

“Ask your son.””

I turned to Malcolm.

He looked down.

And after several seconds, he finally said:

“I wasn't there when Rachel died.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“I was at work.””

“You told me you were.””

“I was.””

“Then why did Tasha say it like that?””

Malcolm's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Rachel called me that night.””

“What did she say?””

He swallowed.

“She said someone was in the house.””

My skin went cold.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“What happened?””

“She screamed.””

“Malcolm…”

“She said, ‘He's here.’”

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“And then?””

“The call disconnected.””

I could barely breathe.

“Did you call her back?””

“Thirty-seven times.””

“Did she answer?””

“No.””

“What did you do?””

“I drove there.””

“And?””

“She was already dead.””

Silence filled the room.

Tasha whispered, “And now you finally want to know why.””

I looked at her.

“What did you do?””

She shook her head.

“I didn't kill Rachel.””

“I didn't ask that.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to protect Isaiah.””

“From whom?””

She looked directly at Malcolm.

Then she said, “From his father.””

Malcolm's face went blank.

I stared at him.

May you like

And Tasha whispered the words that changed everything.

“Rachel didn't die because of an accident.””
