Chapter 5: The Person Behind Everything
The name on the document stared back at us.
Thomas Reed.
Rebecca’s father’s former business partner.
The man everyone believed had disappeared years ago.
I remembered him.
He was always around after Emily’s accident.
Always offering help.
Always telling me to focus on Lily.
I thought he was being kind.
I thought he cared.
I was wrong.
“He saved you,” I whispered.
Emily nodded slowly.
“But he didn’t save me out of kindness.””
The pieces were finally coming together.
Rebecca didn’t enter my life by accident.
She had planned it.
She knew Emily might never return.
She knew I was vulnerable.
She knew Lily needed someone.
And she used all of it.
I called the police.
Within hours, investigators were at the house.
Rebecca sat quietly in the living room.
No more fake smiles.
No more pretending.
She looked empty.
An officer placed documents on the table.
“We found evidence connecting Thomas Reed to the vehicle used near the crash site.””
Rebecca looked up.
“He acted alone.””
Everyone turned toward her.
“You’re protecting him?”” I asked.
She laughed.
“No.””
Her eyes moved toward Emily.
“I’m protecting myself.””
Emily stepped forward.
“You planned this.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“I planned to become the person you should have been.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Rebecca’s expression changed.
For a moment, I saw regret.
Real regret.
Then it disappeared.
“I was tired of watching people choose you.””
Emily said nothing.
Rebecca continued.
“Daniel loved you.””
She looked at me.
“Your daughter loved you.””
Her voice became bitter.
“Everyone loved you.””
The officer moved closer.
“Rebecca, you need to come with us.””
She stood.
Before leaving, she looked at Lily.
My daughter was behind Emily, holding her mother’s hand.
Rebecca stared at her.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
Lily looked away.
“That’s not true.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed Rebecca.
Because Lily finally understood.
Rebecca left with the officers.
But the story wasn’t over.
Not yet.
Three days later, Emily and I sat outside Lily’s school.
Watching her laugh with her friends.
It was the first normal moment we had experienced in years.
“I missed this,” Emily said.
I looked at her.
“Me too.””
She smiled sadly.
“I thought I lost everything.””
“You came back.””
She looked at me.
“So did you.””
For the first time in years, I felt hope.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
I opened it.
And my blood went cold.
It was a picture.
A picture of Lily leaving school.
Taken that same day.
Underneath it were five words.
*You caught the wrong person.*
Emily saw my face change.
“What is it?””
I showed her the screen.
Her expression disappeared.
Because below the message was another image.
A man standing outside the school gate.
A man we thought was gone.
Thomas Reed.

And beneath the picture was one final message:
*Rebecca was only the beginning.*
