Chapter 6: The Night Maya Never Forgot

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

*Ask your daughter what happened the night before I disappeared.*

The basement suddenly felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

And standing beside me was the one person I trusted more than anyone in the world.

My daughter.

“Maya,” I whispered.

She didn’t answer.

That was the first thing that terrified me.

Not the message.

Not Eric being alive.

Not the photographs hidden in our basement.

It was the silence.

Because Maya always answered me.

Even when she was scared.

Even when she was angry.

But now she was staring at the floor like she was looking at a memory she had spent months trying to bury.

“Mom…”

Her voice cracked.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What happened?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

“Find out what?””

She looked at the photograph again.

“The night before Dad disappeared.””

The room went silent.

“Maya.””

She sat down on the basement stairs.

“I saw him.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“You saw your father?””

She nodded.

“After dinner.””

I stepped closer.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because he told me not to.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“He threatened you?””

“No.””

She looked up.

“He begged me.””

That answer confused me.

“Begged you to do what?””

Maya took a shaky breath.

“Dad came to my room that night.””

The words felt impossible.

Eric had supposedly been gone the next morning.

Dead.

Gone forever.

“He told me he was leaving,” she continued.

“He said he had made mistakes and that people were coming after him.””

“People?””

“He didn’t explain.””

“What did you do?””

“I asked him to stay.””

Her voice became smaller.

“I told him you needed him.””

I looked away.

Because that hurt.

Not because she was wrong.

Because she had loved him.

She was a child trying to save her family.

“And then?””

“He gave me something.””

“What?””

Maya reached into her hoodie pocket.

For a moment, I thought she was going to pull out another secret.

Instead, she took out a small silver key.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

“From Dad.””

Daniel, who had been standing near the basement door, stepped forward.

“What key is that?””

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

She looked at me.

“He told me if anything happened, I had to keep it safe.””

I stared at the key.

All this time.

My daughter had been carrying the missing piece.

“Maya, why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because the next morning he was gone.””

Her eyes filled.

“And everyone said he was dead.””

I softened.

“Oh, sweetheart…”

“But then I saw him.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“Three weeks later.””

Daniel frowned.

“You saw Eric after the accident?””

Maya nodded.

“He came to the school parking lot.””

My blood ran cold.

“He told me I couldn’t tell anyone.””

“Why?””

“Because if I did, you would be in danger.””

I looked toward the dark basement.

Everything Eric had done suddenly felt much closer.

“He manipulated you,” I whispered.

Maya looked down.

“I know.””

“No,” I said gently.

“You were thirteen.””

She started crying.

“I should have told you.””

I hugged her.

“You were scared.””

“I was scared because he made me think he was protecting us.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because that was Eric’s greatest talent.

He didn’t force people.

He convinced them.

Daniel picked up the key carefully.

“This might open something.””

“Something where?”” I asked.

Before he could answer, we heard a noise upstairs.

A door closing.

Everyone froze.

Daniel turned off the flashlight.

Another sound.

Footsteps.

Inside the house.

My heart pounded.

The police had left twenty minutes earlier.

No one should have been there.

Daniel whispered:

“Stay here.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

We moved silently upstairs.

The hallway was dark.

Then I saw it.

A figure standing at the end of the hall.

Tall.

Still.

Watching us.

“Maya,” I whispered.

She grabbed my hand.

The figure stepped forward.

The light from the street window hit his face.

And I saw him.

Not Eric.

Someone else.

A man I had never met.

He smiled.

May you like

Then he said:

“You finally found the key.””
